It could be your closest friend living nearby, that can be contacted in case of an emergency. I've been put on documents as the next of kin to a few friends because they are living away from their relatives. That doesn't mean that i will inherit their "wealth" when they die. They have family back home that would inherit from them.
Very true. My Mum was my aunt’s next of kin but when my aunt died my mum stepped back and the daughter took over all decisions. She’s not even involved in distributing her wealth, her bank accounts etc. The daughter does that not my Mum who was the next of kin.

Next of kin, most times in cases where someone is leaving faraway from their family, could be anyone really. It could be your closest friend living nearby, that can be contacted in case of an emergency.
I've been put on documents as the next of kin to a few friends because they are living away from their relatives. That doesn't mean that i will inherit their "wealth" when they die. They have family back home that would inherit from them.
But it's a huge decision therefore putting the right person is crucial. You may end up giving your power to a leech
Very true. My Mum was my aunt’s next of kin but when my aunt died my mum stepped back and the daughter took over all decisions. She’s not even involved in distributing her wealth, her bank accounts etc. The daughter does that not my Mum who was the next of kin.
