I watched this video months ago and loved it, but I no longer decorate for Christmas - but I still wanted to make this lantern. The opportunity just presented itself. My grandson, my sweet little fella and the last grandchild before the greatgrandchildren started, is finishing up his Marine Boot Camp with the grueling Crucible and before becoming a full fledged Marine (wiping away tears). He will then be coming home for 10 days before continuing his military journey. I have watched this video 4 or 5 times, made my notations (supplies, times, measurements, etc) so that I can create 3 lanterns (hopefully more) for his mother's house, his father's house, my house and possibly (hopefully) his sister's house and his other grandparent's house. The idea is that we "burn the candle" every day of Crucible as well as any other time we want to send him thoughts of love and encouragement As he visits his family, he will see just how united his family is in support of his decision and efforts. I can't thank you enough for your idea and this video.
These lanterns are lovely. I’ve made four so far. The latest one is going to my daughters office as they have a competition to decorate their desks for Christmas! Thanks Sam
so cute! i really liked this! i did make two changes... instead of having an opening on one side to put the lights in, i left the bottom loose from the top, so you can open it up that way to put the lights in from the bottom and then it can be on a table and all sides look finished, closed and the same. i also made the black 'lid' bottom part 1/16 of an inch bigger to make sure that it sat in the bottom without bowing. on one lantern, i put some silhouette pcs on the inside of deer to show through since i did not have the snowflake vellum. these are sooooo cute!
These are just amazing. My husband loves antique lanterns. His father worked for the railroad when he was a child. I might use some distress ink on the kraft card to give them the antique look. Thanks so much.
They are absolutely fab Sam. Gotta do them. Gotta get some tweens involved too methinks! They could sure bling them like crazy and they'd have a blast. Thank you for sharing. Love it
Love this. I'm going to share this with my 3rd Friday Workshop Group. Then when that is finished I want to make the smaller versions to add to my tree. Thanks for sharing this with us.
Sam, your tutorials have helped me tremendously. Whenever I need to make something, I go to your channel first and sure enough I find exactly what I need. Your tutorials really help me to make really professional looking craft. Im so grateful. Thank you. Cleopatra from Zimbabwe
Love this Tutorial, have made a few of these. I have used removable (Velcro) toppers on them so I can to use all year round. This has just popped up again. Might just go make another one 😂 Thank You once again Sam. Patricia 🏴🏴🏴💕
Oh my gosh 😃! ! Big hugs Sam🤗, Theses lanterns are so pretty 🙄, Can't wait to make these Thank you again Sam for sharing such a wonderful tutorials as you always do😊
Hi Sam, i cannot wait to make this as it is amazing, but i am wondering if you would you still do the paper bit in the top corner when scoring if using the hunky dory purple score board?
Love them Sam and you need two so that you have matching sides(or that could just be my ocd and my matchiness because i can't just have one). Thank you flower for a great tutorial on something definitely that wee bit different. Crafty hugs from Scotland x
Hi Sam. Your Christmas Lantern is amazing! So beautiful. I love the size. Nice and big, perfect for home decor. Your vellum is gorgeous! You sure got lucky finding that. I remember you showing us that pack the first time and I looked everywhere online and in stores with no luck. We can stamp or emboss plain vellum or even acetate. Plain would be just as pretty. Lovely project thank u so much. I am definitely going to be making these for my home. Thanks so much for sharing ❤️💕
Hi Sam, been on holiday for the last two weeks and am so looking forward to catching up with your projects! This lantern is a brilliant idea, love it! x
Just found this tutorial! Thank you for sharing 💕 These are great!! Hopefully I can get these made over the weekend. If I can make them as perfect as yours I can give to daughter for her new home. I love your channel and your dedication to perfection! Keep up the awesome job :)
Absolutely amazing lantern! Thank you so much for yet another amazing tutorial and always so easy and clear to follow! These would make amazing gift boxes too, with battery operated candles included so it doubles up! Absolutely LOVE it! TFS xx (oooh .... did I mention .... this is amazing??? lol!) xx
Wow, love this lantern, guess what ....ive just got to make this now, another brilliant idea and tutorial a massive thanks Sam for your inspiration -- Susan x
Sam, you must stop making all these great crafts, I can't keep up the pace, every time I see a new tutorial from you they are so good I have to make them. GREAT STUFF.😊
I want to make small ones for all my friends; just big enough for one light. I also think they'd be great as gift boxes at any size if the chimney part were made separate like the bottom is.
@@MixedUpCraft Yep! It turns out that I don't actually have a square punch, so I used a label punch and it's kind of adorable. I just need to re-work a little to make it a skosh wider cuz my corners aren't even a quarter inch and don't hide the flap.
Just curious if anyone has an answer to my question: I know that the red tape is strong under normal circumstances, but does it hold up under very hot temperatures (during storage)? I live in Florida and never store my Christmas decoration in my attic, but even my garage gets very hot in the summer months. I would love to be able to use the red tape instead of glue for the ease of it. But if it doesn't hold up, I am wondering if I should use glue. This is very nice.
I worked for a major US craft chain for ten years and it's my experience that all commercially available glue will fail eventually and that heat makes it fail faster. That being said, wet glue and paper are besties because the glue gets into the fibers of the paper and makes a very strong bond. Vellum is the exception because the fibers are plasticized in order to create its translucency.

Hehe, it's not hard Susan, lots of people have messaged me saying they loved the ease of the project. Go give it a go :)

Oh! I forgot to mention I only have plain vellums, so I used Christmas themed embossing folders to create a pattern for the square cutouts.
