If you were cruising in a station wagon back in the day odds are it was with your family. Perfect for road trips these cars were known as a family vehicle that you would typically see packed to the roof with luggage and screaming kids. Well this beautiful 1970 Pontiac Catalina may have started life that way but nowadays has a certain cool factor that sets it apart from those other boring wagons. With a nose similar to that of a grand prix or early firebird this car has style. You rarely see these cars up for sale and this one happens to be one of the nicest in the country.
From front to rear this long classic is nothing but high quality. The fit and finish is superb making it a contender at every car show it goes to. The body on the car is in incredible condition and with deep Black paint looks very slick cruising down the road. All of the chrome has a beautiful shine as does the stainless work which is all cleanly mounted in place. The soft ray tinted glass windows are all in good condition and free from damage. The factory roof rack is still mounted in place on top of the factory vinyl roof and has a very cool angled design. 17" Torque Thrust wheels are in place on all four corners and are polished out to a very high quality shine. These are then wrapped with Red Line continental tires.
Powering this classic is a 400CI motor that runs very strong and has no problem moving the 9 passenger wagon body. The look is all original which is nice to see in a low mileage car like this. Dual exhaust is in place and routed out of the sides just behind the rear wheels. Rectangle tips were added which hug the body giving it a nice custom touch. Backing the motor is a 400 Turbo Hydramatic Transmission that shifts smoothly and with no issues. The car was fitted with A/C from the factory as well as power steering and power disc brakes.
The interior of the car is in amazing condition for its age and still has the original look. Black vinyl is used throughout and is in great shape. 3 bench seats are in place with the back one being mounted to face the rear. This gives places for 9 people to sit comfortably, thus the name 9 passenger wagon. When not hauling people around the 2 rear seats can be folded down giving a ton of storage space. To gain access to the rear seat you can open the rear hatch which was designed to open in 2 ways. This is incredibly cool to see on an over 40 year old car. The hatch folds down like the typical truck bed but also swings open towards the left like a regular door. All of the trim in the car is in good shape as are all of the faux original wood panels. The dash utilizes all of the original style components. The A/C works properly and uses the stock vents which are nicely inset into the dash. Another cool feature is the remote drivers side mirror and power windows which is are pretty cool luxuries to have considering it is from the 70's.
This car comes with a lot of cool extras that document its history. A lot of these items are hard to find so it is nice to see them preserved so well. This includes a 7 page original 1970s Station Wagon brochure that was put out by the dealerships, a Pontiac Motor Division redelivery check list, original build sheet, original window sticker with options/price listed and a 1970's original owners manual. How cool is that!? Look around for another one of these cars and you will have a tough time finding one. Plus, if you do happen to find one it won't be near as nice as this one is.

Wow. It brings me back. I took my road test in that car in 1971. That car was so huge. Look in the rear view mirror and the car never ended.

In 1979 my parents handed down to me a 1970 Buick Estate Wagon loaded with the 455/4 Barrel V8 which I drove in junior high and high school, and we also had a drive-in theater here in Lawrence Twp., New Jersey.

My grandma had a red one the exact same year that she bought new. Red with black interior. I loved that car with the rear facing seats.
Our family had the red one too. Except the interior was red or maroon. Us kids use to argue who would sit in the back facing seat. It was great when we went to drive in theaters. Good times. 😊

In 69 when they came out with this grill, many people thought it looked like an Edsel remake. My typing teacher had a green 69 convertible. Beautiful car.

I like how the bumper is blended into the grill. That is common in the 21st century but back then this kind of thing was way ahead of it's time. Combined with all that chrome this front end is one of a kind.

What a beauty! Amazing Wide Track Pontiac! Years ago I had a beautiful 1970 LeMans Wagon, Black like this with a beautiful Silver grey vinyl cloth interior I bought off the original owner with 95,000 miles on it. The engine needed a valve job and the Turbo 350 transmission was slipping. This was at the same time I had beef T-Boned in my 1970 GTO by a Fleetwood driven by a salesman not paying attention while flying across a mall parking lot, that pushed the drivers door arm rest right into my side so hard it broke two ribs, but more importantly bent the car’s frame! Well his insurance company paid me enough money so I could buy the Wagon and let me experiment! Mind you this was only in 1975, and my car was in beautiful condition with only 43,000 miles on it! So I bought the Wagon that was in great shape that needed engine work and transmission work. Seeing as how both cars were the same shade of black, I was also able to switch the entire front clip over and also the 400 4 brl with headers and A/C right into the Wagon that was easy with the front clip removed! The only hassle was the GTO was a four speed! But with everything there all it took was a little extra time. I was even able to keep the rear differential in the Wagon that had the same 3:42 ratio and Trac-Loc diff. All I had to do is install the front springs off a Catalina and Moog Cargo Coils in the rear, with the best shocks I could find that would fit, along with the rear sway bar from the GTO! Man a lot of guys loved that Wagon! At the time I was in The U.S.Army Stationed at Ft. Carson CO. So needless to say I had a few friends to go exploring up in the Rocky Mountains! With extra large mud and snow tires on it was like a good two wheel drive SUV!! Only a lot faster! I drove it round trip home to Massachusetts one time, with three other young folks I found in the local paper, looking for a ride back east to Greenwich CT! That paid for all my gas BOTH ways! Plus had a big bag of weed for a fun trip! We used a CB radio to help spot the Bears. But this was just before the speed limits were reduced to 55, so we were able to cover lots of ground at an easy relaxed 70-80 mph! Plus we got 18 mpg average on the whole trip! Without burning or using a drop of oil! Man I wish I still had that car! I sold it when I came down on Levy to go overseas, all my friends bid on it to own it!

Sure did have one like it in my family. My mom had a blue 67 Catalina wagon with the 389, it was also loaded if I remember right after such a long time. It had a station finder radio, push the wonder bar and the needle would scan and stop when it found something.
I remember when that front end was introduced in the fall of '69. It was radical for the day. The Bonneville's of that year boasted about their 455 with a little red badge on the lower rocker ahead of the door. Cool stuff.

This wagon is beautiful!! We had the 76 version with a 455 4bbl.
The third seat Faced Forward, and the tailgate window opened upward and disappeared into the roof. The tailgate door was electric too and would disappear into the floor, but only if the car was in "park". Love all of these Pontiacs. We had actual Pontiac Rally-II Rims and part of the insert was key colored to the car color.
Even if it does have 114,000 miles on it, the car was well taken care of.

My great uncle Ed had a '70 Bonneville Safari when I was a kid in the late '70s and early '80s. He gave it to my Dad after someone had busted out the back glass and rain got in it. My Dad sold the 455/turbo 400 out of it to a friend that put it in a Trans Am.
Sometimes you see an oldie for the first time (in wagon form, that is) and you just know you'll never see another one - and this car's it. Beautiful man, thank you, and do you have any idea how many were made in wagons?
Not sure how many wagons were made. It is kind of funny because back in the day wagons were always the boring family car. So a lot of them probably rotted away. In recent years wagons have become "cool" and are pretty desirable.

We had the sedan as a kid, I think it was a couple years newer, came from Iowa, I remember as a kid we had to put it down when the battery fell out of the car due to horrid rust
That one is awesome, my favorite style would have to be early 80s GM wagons, my first ride was a Malibu and the larger wagons looked sweet to me with the boxy style

Caprice was not available in a wagon until 1966. The Caprice was introduced in Feb of 65 as a luxury trim option on the 65 Impala 4 door hardtop only. It became a stand alone series in '66.

We had it for sale for a friend and were asking $20,000 for it. He actually ended up deciding to keep the car and then after a while traded it for something else.

After it started and idled, before it drove off, it sounded like the engine has a rod knock.
I believe GM dropped that 400 V8 for the 350 by '75 on the full sized models.
That sounds right, I know they still used the 400 in some Trans Ams.
It looks and sounds so mean for what it is. Awesome car. Only thing I don't like is the rims, those are ugly and look out of place.

No power windows. I see cranks
The rear window is power, it shouldn't have been plural. On a lot of these people that want to add power windows will actually use the cranks to do it. Push forward on the crank and it goes down, pull back and it goes up. We listed this car a while back so I can't remember if it had that or not, I suspect not so should have just been power rear window.
I wouldn’t call it “fully loaded”! No power windows, AM radio etc.
The guy said this car had power windows and power seat but I saw crank windows and no evidence of a power seat. Most people ordered those options on Bonneville wagons and Chevy Kingswood Estates and Pontiac Executive wagons....not Catalinas.

@@larryhawkins3294 I'll be honest, I didn't rewatch the video so not sure what he said. Just going off description and what I remember of the car. It had power steering, power brakes, AC and the rear window was power. It shouldn't have been plural. There is a switch on the dash to lower the rear window. I don't recall it having power seats.
