Rode and eventually drove on this freeway (we called it Bayshore) all the time growing up in South San Francisco and Millbrae 1956-1972. My dad loved it, since he was a fast driver. By the time I married and moved to San Jose 1972-1975 the 280 interstate was finished and it was a way nicer road than that battered and noisy 101!

I noticed something at 8:07, so I paused it to get a good look. The overhead guidance sign for US-101 South to San Jose has an outlined US Highway shield. Those are extremely rare and are almost all gone as that sign is definitely 60+ years old and I thought "Those still exist?" when seeing it. Another thing of note is that the US-101/I-880 Junction is still an "accident-waiting-to-happen" cloverleaf interchange. Definitely needs to be modernized.

There certainly aren’t very many button copy signs of that vintage left in California.

Yeah oof, that wouldn't even be the only one in the San Francisco Bay Area. I-680 and CA-4 interchange in Concord, CA, I-780 and I-80 interchange in Vallejo, CA, I-680 and CA-262 interchange in Fremont, CA, and the infamous I-680 and I-580 interchange in Dublin/Pleasanton, CA (which only has one flyover ramp).
...Also technically I-680 and CA-237 in Milpitas, CA, but that's not as major of an interchange in terms of traffic than the other ones.

Wow, what an absolutely STUNNING freeway! This really is automotive nirvana. I wish we had freeways like this here in Australia!

thanks for the comment. California has some pretty great freeway drives, but I have to say Australia is a country that I have always wanted to drive through too.

Because I-280 CA forms a complete bypass (Joe Colla Interchange to Alemany Maze) and Downtown SF spur (Alemany Maze to King Street/5th Street in SF) of US 101 and the bypass part is more scenic than US 101 (the Bayshore Freeway itself) because there's a lot of nature and I-280 CA is considered the world's most beautiful urban freeway.

US 101 is busier than I-280, but the drive on both routes, I mean detours, are about approximately an hour. I-280 is a better pick than US 101 because of that, it's mostly quicker.

You would have a more scenic drive if you took I-280 all the way.

I filmed I-280 northbound in 2017, so I chose to do US-101 for that reason.

One road tripper, Freewayjim, already filmed his Video 19-13 while driving I-280 in California heading south while bypassing US 101 between San Francisco and San Jose. He says it's the world's most beautiful urban freeway.

I remember that before the I-680 interchange was completed, some of the ramps were. One incongruously had a car parked upon it

The ramps of US 101 near SFO almost looked like a local express lane system there.

If you drive around San Jose area you will find how bad the road paved. The recent rebuilt 101 in the neighborhood of SF airport looks like surfing on the sea. I am so ashamed that world’s tech hub can not even pave their road flat. The whole road building companies in Bay Area have severe quality issue.

The Google Maps part of this video says 44 minutes in US 101/Bayshore Freeway between SF and SJ.

1:14 In this part of the video while on I-280, on the right, there's a short stub of a ramp that has no connection. I heard it from Freewayjim when I watch his Video 19-13.
