They didn't destroy her. Ferguson has a personality disorder. With amnesia she remembered her other vulnerable personality, with all her past. She knows what has made her this way. Ferguson also knows that they will bomb the prison, so she could escape.
The showrunners actually intended to end the show at season 7 the last 2 seasons only happened due to fan demand. If the showrunners went with their original plan Joan likely remains buried and we dont get Marie suddenly redeeming herself too after being a monster in s6 and 7
