Thank you for this. You helped us out about 8 months ago when we had a massive gnat outbreak in our crested gecko tank and isopod bins. We place sheets of fly trap on the insides of tub lids and it worked amazingly to cut the population down! We now keep them there just in case. For the crested gecko we had to get rid of the bioactive but are looking to try it again. I don’t wish a fungus gnat breakout on anyone as they can be hard to deal with
I also recommend the Katchy Auto-Magic Insect trap. I have two in my isopod room, and it has been a long time since I have even noticed a live fungus gnat (but I do find dead ones in the traps!)

Can't wait till Wed when the stuff gets here and I can prevent this from happening in the future!
These are so annoying and have infested my house! They live in every single potted plant I own. One even flew in my eye and it was awful getting it out.
I have a week old open terrarium then I see fungus gnats are starting to collect in the terrarium. Just added recently some springtails hoping that they out compete these gnats.
I had fungus gnats in my isopod culture. I had a house spider move into a nearby open terrarium, raise few clutches of eggs, and deal with all the adults that came out of the culture.
Rachel O'leaery uses the Mosquito Bits in her summer tubbing to prevent mosquitoes and both dragonflies and damsel flies. She highly recommends it. I'll have to let her know about using them like you said to prevent fungus gnats. I wonder if it would work on fruit flies as well? I get a fruit fly swarm every summer because they fly through my window scree or they come in on Bananas and other fruis peels.
I keep having outbreaks in my guinea pig cage. At one point i had hundreds even though my cage is clean. So, to get rid of them i sucked them up with my vacuum. I learned that every time i start to see just a few, if i suck them up then i don't have an outbreak. This method is also dog friendly.
Butterwort is very very good as you mentioned, i highly recommend it. Worked great in my frog tank. Make sure to use rainwater/aquarium water/RO, high light and sphagnum moss as a substrate for them
I have a lovely "closed" Fishbowl terrarium with springtails and Isopods. I noticed Fungus Gnats flies today ! How did they get in there, and how to kill them without killing springtails and Isopods ?
I was just reading a post in a Facebook isopod group about fungus gnats. Mosquito bits were mentioned as well as some kind of nematodes and something called Gnatrol, I believe. Good to know as my giant canyon enclosure has some fungus gnats.
I had a bad outbreak in my bioactive corn snake tank and I used predatory nematodes I bought at a nursery. It took a few weeks but it worked like a charm!
Very cool! I have never tired these...I’ve heard they can cause issues with isopods. Do you have isopods in your bioactive corn snake vivarium? If so, did the nematodes affect them?
Aquarimax Pets I do have isopods in there, but they survived so I’m guessing the nematodes are ok with them. Well, the adults anyway, not sure about the mancae.
They shouldn’t harm your snake, I have the same active ingredient (a strain of bacteria ) in one of my garter snake Bioactive enclosures, and they are all over the substrate. No issues!
It might be an issue within an isopod enclosure, but keeping some butterworts in the same room with suitable light, etc. could be a good way to help control fungus gnats.
Thank you for this Great Video. I use the ribbon strips in the summer, because of the flys. I will have to place them near my houseplants and aquarium. I'm trying this with a tote that has a loose fitting lid; I put a thin strip of weather stripping under the lid. Hopefully this will make the lid tighter and keep out the fungus gnats.
One natural way is to use this carnivorous plant. The Mexican Butterwort, its range can extend as far north as Oregon. Sadly they are only active predators in the warm months and go into a non-carnivorous mode in the cold months. They capture the gnats with sticky leaves.

It supposed to be very specific to mosquitoes and fungus gnats. As far as I know there are no effects on springtails, but I have not studied that extensively.
I have not noticed any issues with springtails with its use myself. Spraying mosquito bit water directly on springtails is probably best avoided though
Great topic. Ive been using Gnatrol for few weeks now, it is soluble so it is apparently easier to use than mosquito bits. I believe they have the same active ingredient. Have you used this also?
Aquarimax Pets the packaging does not have expiration date. I still see a lot of adult fungus gnats since it only affects larvae, good thing is i have only seen 1 or two larvae recently vs i would see ten or more before using this. I was informed the bacteria is only active fro 48 hours after mixing in water so i use it every time i water isopod bins. Do the bits also work the same way, in which it is only active for short time and need to reapply?
The cape sundew!! I just got one this week and it already looks terrible. Seems like such an awesome little helper, but tough to get it thriving. Have you ever tried using nematodes or predatory mites (such as Stratiolaelaps) for fungus gnats and other flies? I have found both to work very well, only downside to the mites is they also eat my springtails. They do no harm to any inverts or reptiles/amphibians otherwise though. I will have to try the bacteria, seems even easier to manage than the mites/nematodes.
Estella De Grande Hopefully your sundew will perk up. Are you using distilled water and good light? I ended up getting some predatory mites as hitchhikers with some millipedes a number of years ago. They got rid of grain mites! I haven’t specifically used them against fungus gnats yet though...probably because I am concerned about negative effects from n my springtails. I haven’t tried the prefatory nematodes, because they apparently affect isopods negatively.

Hello, I started a terrarium with isopods, snails and springtails however there has been an invasion of fungal gnats and in order to get rid of them in this case, I need to completely let the terrarium dry and let all my organisms die in it, or should I transport the organisms and pray that there was no fungal gnat/ gnats eggs transported? Edit: I can’t put sticky traps on near the top of the glass because my snails like climbing
More fungus gnats will likely find your terrarium later, so drying out the terrarium is probably not the best solution. I’d suggest looking into adding Mosquito Bits, which are toxic to fungus gnats, but not to isopods, snails, or springtails if used correctly.

Great stuff, as always, Rus. I've never heard of Mosquito Bits before. Can you write out the name of the bacteria, please. I probably can't find the same product where I am, but maybe there is something with the same active ingredient.
Aquarimax Pets they’ve worked beautifully for me when I soak them, strain them, and pour it down the sides. I now just add the liquid to my substrate bin. I haven’t had gnats since. But I took other precautions as well! I did notice the liquid did kill some of my powders if that helps your research. This video has helped so many people!!
Aquarimax Pets I started using them in August, and stopped after a few weeks when I noticed a dramatic decline in the gnats. My yellow calico scabers, lotto mix scabers venezillo parvus, and my laevis had gnats also. It did not affect them at all. Under the mossy area in the powder enclosure where I would pour the water I found about 20 dead. I added new substrate, stopped using the bit liquid, and it took a couple weeks but haven’t had deaths since. I was having issues with my powders and had asked you for help, and I can only conclude that the bits were the issue. It seemed to hinder their molting as well.
@@AshleyNebs I remember communicating with you about the powders. That makes a lot of sense. Please keep me posted. I had excellent results with it as well, for a long time, and it still works. The only problem is that, about a year later, my ivory millipedes, which had had several dresses without any effect, started dying off without any apparent reason...the only thing I can think of is the mosquito bits. Still, correlation is not causation. I would love to hear updates, just to help increase the data we have on this.
What about spiders? I put a daddy long legs in my boas bioactive... seems to be catching stuff. @@zprimal5290 that depends on how many potential breeding sites for fu by us gnats y have and how widely you use the bits, but if you use it everywhere they are breeding, without 2 weeks you should notice a big difference
Currently engaged in a rather annoying Fungas Gnat battle. Currently recovering all my air vents with with Chafon, added more Springtails in all bins, have Fly Ribbons up, and have heard mosquito bits does not effect Isopods, but will also wipe out Fungas Gnats any input?
Sounds like you are on the right track. These measures should all help.
Does anyone know how to get rid of fungus gnats in a planted aquarium that houses snails 2 dwarf frogs and fish. The fungus gnats live at the top of the waterline under the floating plants. I believe they started in my succulents on the other side of the room that I use coco peat in my soil. Please help any suggestion welcome I have millions of these buggers! They are driving me crazy! They are getting in my snail egg clutches now 😩.
I've heard that hydrogen peroxide will kill fungus gnats, but not isopods. I'm not very confident in this, but I need to get these gnats gone because I'm getting desperate. Do you think it's safe?
I have ‘t tried that...But the Katchy insect trap works wonders for fungus gnats!
My sundews worked great but if you need volume .....
Mosquito Bits sound great - until I found that 8oz pot for the UK is $65 on eBay (because it is an import)
Maverick StClare wow, that is really expensive!!
I Am still looking foreword to scolapendra polymorpha the best pet invertebrate
How do you spell that fly proof fabric used for venting?
That’s ‘chiffon’.
@@Aquarimax I tried looking it up starting with “sh” lol I’m seeing mostly hemming fabrics when I search Amazon for chiffon tape. Is there Any particular type I need?
Try looking for ‘chiffon fabric’ or you can also look for ‘no-see-um mesh’
Could you please do a video or let me know what you know about Asellus a freshwater isopod?
@@Aquarimax thank you so much!!
What's the name of that machine that is very popular? I've seen it mentioned in an online group.
The Katchy Automagic?
@@Aquarimax YES. I always think Sucky, but l know that's not it.
Anyway, I've heard people have had good experiences using them. I'm not sure if you have thoughts on them?
@@MIsopods I Made a video about testing one out, in fact…and now I have two of them!
@@Aquarimax Awesome, so I just haven't made it to that video yet! Haha.
As I'm new to this, I have only scratched the surface on most of your content!
Great info...thx
I have been having problems with the gnats in my zebra isopods enclosure. It started with one. Now I'm killing a bunch everyday. I'm worried because I found zebra dead and I thought it could be these gnats. It was either the gnat, or he died molting. Will they kill them?
The Kingdom of Animals The gnats are unlikely to have caused the death of the zebra isopod. It may just have been a molting issue.
Great stuff, as always, Rus. I've never heard of Mosquito Bits before. Can you write out the name of the bacteria, please. I probably can't find the same product where I am, but maybe there is something with the same active ingredient.
John Racine Thank you, and sure! The name Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis.
@@Aquarimax Thanks! I'll see what I can find.
How do you spell chuefan or the window screen replacement you use?
Endemic Storm ‘chiffon’ is the spelling. 👍🏽
Aquarimax Pets thanks i was meaning to purchase some for my new cultures 👍
Great vid
Daniel Lomas Thanks!
Does the Mosquitoes Bits harm the springtails?
Not in the short term...not entirely sure about long term
Are you no longer supporting mosquito bits for fungus gnats control?
I am not sure yet...I need to do more research on this.
This does help, I appreciate it! How long have you been using mosquito bits?
There are these other bugs tho, similar in size and activity to the spingtails (of which i have a very healthy population) but these other bugs seem darker in color, any clue what they could be? Their pretty hyperactive.. anyways nice video, thanks for the info!
I am using butterwort
Family Pet Adventure I totally want some...
@@Aquarimax I got a couple for a reasonable price from a guy in PA on ebay
Wow great information thank you from here too mars lol
Just need a solution to the flour beetles now!
Catherine Amyes 😊
What about nematodes? Can they harm Isopods or do they also just go for eggs/larvae?
Nematodes intended to kill fungus gnats can, at least in some cases, harm isopods.
@@Aquarimax well, I’m not gonna take that risk when I’m not 100% sure it works well for the Pods. It’s kinda strange, but they seem to appear more in my A.Vulgare box, which is normally quite a bit drier than my aniscus Asellus which are pretty damp. They seem to have none so far
And btw thanks for answering on a year old video 👍🏼
@@slowflow6474 I agree...that is why I do not use or recommend nematodes with isopods for fungus gnat control. I have a video coming out fairly soon on another biocontrol for fungus gnats with isopods though.
@@Aquarimax I’ll be looking forward for that video, gonna see which new tips there are
Is just bought those yellow sticky things ( don’t know what they are called in english) and put them on the lids of the most infested containers and got 2 carnivore plants to put around my boxes, let’s see what they will do 👍🏼
I am currently fighting a huge battle with these in my ivory millipede enclosure in particular. It is only about 2 months old and I only had a tiny amount of springtails to add at the time. I have been growing my 2 springtail cultures and adding some as I can but it is just not enough. I have stuck sticky traps around and even on the inside of his lid (where he can't reach) and it has helped some but they have just exploded. I am even considering all new substrate and starting over but I hate to lose what springtails I have managed to get established. I ha e also put fruitfly traps (look like apples) on top of his box and they help too. I am just at my wits end with them they are driving me nuts.
Look up Dalotia coriaria, a small beetle that preys on fungus gnat eggs and larvae. They are readily available
From greenhouse supply companies.
@@Aquarimax They are safe with the Ivories right? I only have one almost 3 inch male now but do hope to get a female in the future to breed them.
I have the same problem, did you get rid of them?
@@lillealexandraa between the sticky traps and springtails they are pretty much gone.
@@RisingFromTheAshes97 been having this problem for maybe 4 months, using fly traps with vingar and fly paper, light traps. I have some springtales but maybe its not enough springtales yet
I welcome them, they feed the spiders in my house :)
I think i will have to throw away my isopods then... My plant collection cannot take this.
Fungus gnats are attracted to plant soil, even without isopods. Mosquito bits soaked in water should help protect your plants .
Fungus gnat larvae will eat plant roots.
Cannerbernerd Yep...especially in large numbers.
