I very recently realized how dark Francis’s character could have gone. Spoilers for later in the game below: Emotionally scarred when she was young by a bloody accident where she believes she killed or at least serously injured her best friend with her own bare paws, she develops a phobia and constantly lives in guilt and fear, questioning who she is and if she deserves what she has because of what she did, constantly having bouts of fear and fainting, bullied by dogs stronger than her. Seeing red brings her flashbacks of the incident. Tomatoes landing at her feet remind her of blood on her paws from when she was younger. Seeing patients operated on or even just with a cut is even worse. She doesn’t give up her job because she wants to be able to help dogs in the way that she couldn’t help her friend, but her phobia scares her too much to even be able to look at a scene like what she went through as a child. She already lives in guilt from what she did in the past, and the fact that she can’t focus on her work and keeps screwing things up because of her fear drives her even deeper into guilt and darkness, which makes her even more inept at her job which gives her even more guilt and it becomes an endless circle, swallowing her entire being. She succumbs to severe anxiety, PTSD, and even depression. I just wanted a game about cute puppies! D: But, her story has a happy ending. The main character, whoever they may be, comes around. They chase away Francis’s malefactors and help her to her paws. Her knight in shining armor. They even chase away some of her demons, even if it’s just for a short time. The darkness returns after that, though, when the effect of the Brave Fruit wears off. Perhaps it’s easier to handle, knowing that her hero’s just a few houses away, or perhaps it’s even worse, as said in-game. But one day soon the main character saves her again, and all her feelings come crashing down. She falls to their paws, telling them all that she’s gone through. Together, though, the main character helps Francis. They find her friend, and Francis finds out that what she thought was a horrible tragedy she caused turned out to be not as bad as she thought. Her phobias disappear, and finally she’s rid of the darkness. I recently voice acted for Francis in a voice-acted THE DOG Island series someone’s putting together (which should be released soon!). It made me think a lot more about her character, and I even started writing a little friendship fanfiction about her and Elaine since they never get any in-game acknowledgement after that one quest, and for being best friends they never act like it. I also thought a lot about shipping (since I imagine her as, like, 16 or something and then main character 15 and characters like Peter, Amalia, the Victory Gang, even Kristina the princess as around 15-17). I try to not ship things but I think I’m losing my self-control on that. I could imagine Francis and Peter being good friends (and I could imagine both being young and stressed-Francis by herself and Peter by the expectations and pressure of his father), or perhaps even one getting a crush on the other. Ahh they’d be so cute! Although I think that during that game the main character and Francis make more sense, Francis falling in love with the main character after they save her. Maybe Francis loves the main character at first but then once the main character dates someone else or leaves the island she gets over them and falls in love with Peter, and maybe Peter gets over Amalia? Ahh so many ways it could go, fanfiction time haha!
Funny you ask that- I just recorded it earlier and I'm about to upload it (but you'll have to wait two hours because that's about how long it takes to upload :P)
I subscribed to you about a year ago because of your beautiful animations, and I recently got a Wii and this game, (I know I'm pretty late to the party on that) and I found your walkthrough! It's so cool to see how you started out (^∇^)ノ♪
I heard that you need to wait for the buffalo to sleep ( if you have the wii version point the wii remote and make a circle shape around the buffalo with the paw) then you either walk up slowly or sniff then when your near the buffalo charge up the bark then hes stunned.
The scene with Elaine and Francis was so touching I almost cried...
I really wish they'd remaster it for the ps3 and ps4. I love this game, they took risks with the E rating!
