Only Dhoni could decide when its time to go but in my opinion he had at least 3-4 more years of test cricket ahead of him. Its tough being keeper in tests though. Hats off to one of the greatest captains India ever produced.

Dhoni is the a master Strategic ! Chanakya of Cricket.
May not be the best guy in terms of technique but mentally he is the calmest (strongest).
He always knew that he isn't the best in terms of test cricket, may be that's why he hinted his test retirement way back in Jan 2012.
I would specify he is master of strategy in Limited overs cricket. He is one of the most defensive, boring and pathetic captain in test cricket. He has most pathetic record in away tests as a captain in the history of the game.

This man quitting captaincy is not going to solve the overseas woes of India, at least that is what I think. I thought, the losses had more to do with experience and we were almost in the threshold of shrugging losses off when this man quit. This is loss of a good leader and it has to be a great loss which will take some time to overcome. If I were to give a piece of my mind, Kohli is not as good a leader as Dhoni. As a keen viewer, I saw what Dhoni tried in those matches which India lost. He tried every permutation and combination. The fields he tried were brilliant, but to no effect. No matter what anybody says, we are forgetting a man's contribution. For me, there won't be another long haired assasin wicket-keeper batsman, for me there won't ever be another underdog World Cup winner, for me there won't be another MSD.

I still feel he should have not retried from playing test cricket atleast for few more years ,we respect his decision & his reasons behind this decision but still feel there was lots of test cricket left in him , could have left d test captaincy but retiring from d test cricket still hurts & there's still immense cricket left in him...
One can still fill d vaccum that got created when he retired & that vacuum is still d same & is not filled yet & never will b....His presence is still missed in d Indian squad in all d formats..!!!...

Good to see that some of my Pakistani friends like humanityisislam have shared their respect to a good cricketer like MSD being a cricket lover and not getting indulged in political affairs which most of the people get influenced with while commenting (mostly India vs Pakistan comments).
I think as sensible and rational individuals we should respect the game and the great bearers of this game and bid them a respectful goodbye no matter from which country they belong!
No Indian can deny the fact that we still get amazed and love some of the Pakistani greats like Imran Khan (the cricketer), Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar (even after his comments on Sachin), Inzamam, etc (to name a few) and we secretly wish Indian team comes up with fast bowlers at least 70% as good as them! :)

No matter who the captain is, India will not be able to win a test match overseas until we have bowlers who are capable of taking 20 wickets in a match. Till then, our best bet is to take 11 batsmen, out of which 5-7 can bowl average as well. Still, Dhoni tried his best to not get the worst result and settle for a draw, which is more than what the present bowling attack is capable of. He is still hated and mocked. Not one person has said anything about the bowlers. We have not got the Ozzies all out in any of the 8 innings they played. Horrible

Honestly, While I congratulate MS Dhoni on a fantasitc career, I think it was in the best interest of the Indian team that he did. this is a really really good Indian team I really believe that. There Top half of the batting Order is very Talented and this new aggressive running between wickets and improved fielding maybe learnt from the inception of the IPL, and I think its great for them. But the last 2 test I've seen Dhoni make some questionable decsions when India were in the lead in the game. I think this team is more than capable of beating this AUS side, But it needed New leadership.

Krisna Siv Good leadership skills cannot help much if the bowlers are not picking up wickets and the entire middle order and tail is collapsing in every other test match. At the end of the day, it's gotta be about the cricket played. The reason Ganguly is called a 'better' test captain than Dhoni is because he had world-class players like Sachin, Dravid, Laxman, Kumble, Harbhajan, Zaheer, etc who helped win overseas, not because Dhoni is himself a 'worse' captain than Ganguly.
Looming Dawn I dont see it that way. To me the job as a captain is to take what you have and make them as good as side as you can and that means utilising there strengths. Im thinking in this particular series where the Indians seemed content on trying to get Haddin out playing a hook shot for a long stretch of time by bouncing him pretty much every ball. I don't think there Dhoni was fully utilising what the strength of his attack was. And the argument that its because India lost many world class players. Thats your job as a captain in my opinion and its not like it isn't possible, look at Ricky Ponting who saw the passing of the worlds best Openers in Langer and Hayden, The best Keeper Batsman in Gilchrist, One of the Best Seemers in Mcgrath and One of the Greatest Spinners in Warne and he still managed to have a reasonable win percentage. As a captain your job is to take your team and make them better and I don't feel Dhoni is up to the task anymore.
MSD lost 7 players, sehwag, gambhir, dravid, srt, vvs, zak, harbajan. Tho only dravid, srt and vvs can be called great, the othrs wer very good. What u say is theoretically nice to hear, but u cant fail to acknowledge the fact that wen ganguly took up captaincy, he had srt, dravid, vvs , kumble, srinath, nayan mongia. All of whom had been on atleast one tour to Aus, Eng(not vvs), RSA, NZ, WI. Srt, kumble, srinath hv toured ther more than once, and had been in the team for almost 8-10 years.
And ganguly too lost in RSA, SL, NZ, Lost a test in Zim and drew the series (shares record with misbah), lost at home to aus, and unlike no other team post 2000, lost a series to a heavily depleted WI, that too with a phenomenal team. That said, i do concede that he never had the kind of bowlers that Ponting, or even Pakistan had in the 90s(which ws instrumental in them winning twice in eng, nz , etc. ). The level of skill in the team inherited by ganguly was so great, and his contributions wer minimal. Yes the headingly, brisbane knocks wer very good, but ppl give him credit for making waugh wait for the toss which in my opinion is utter rubbish.
MSD has waded out sehwag, gambir, harbajan, and all, backed vijay, rahane, (and initially evn kohli in 2011). In a way he has put together a team that has quite a bit of touring experience.
