my young ball python escaped because i didn't close the lid tightly, so he kind of push it out and wandered around my room. this happened once before and i found him behind the curtain. the second time he escaped i searched around the room for hours but couldn't find him at all. i searched every corner of my room and it's not even a big room. I found nothing at all so i was panicking real bad but gave up searching for the night because it was just so late and i have work in the morning. i fell asleep and woke up to that MOTHERFECKER was chilling on my feet like no big deal. i now put my plant pot on top of the tank to make sure he never push it again lol.

My phython did escape once because she sleeps sometimes when I hold her. But I fell asleep too so she just slitheres away. When I awoke and found her gone I searched for hours but didn't find her until next morning. I couldn't sleep all night I was so worried and frantic. So I'm sitting in my chair next morning worrying and wondering where could my Stella be 😢 ? When suddenly I hear a noise like pots and pans being moved around. It was from the stove drawer ! I ran over to look, and there she was, all curled up under a pot cover trying to get warm I suspect. Nice cold metal pots. Good idea for a place to hide when your a poor cold snake 🤣
Poor Stella. I was never so happy in a long time. I picked her up and held her til she was nice and warm. Silly Stella lol 🌳🐍

My one and only snake escape and it was 400% my own stupidity. Was doing a water change, started another errand and forgot to put the whole lid on. Came back 30 min later, seemed like no movements had been made so i put the lid on and locked it. Didn't see my hognose for TWO DAYS (i had recently fed him so I assumed he was digesting) and thought nothing of it. One morning I walked into my living room and noticed my two cats were looking at something under my bookshelf. I assumed it was just a spider and again, thought nothing of it. Then I walked past the bookshelf and heard that very familiar hoggie hiss and i nearly jumped out of my skin. Locked my cats in another room, looked under and found my boy. He was a little dusty but besides that he was just fine! Even though I hadn't even known he was missing I cried and held him close. Now I don't move away from a tank until it's secured, no matter what!

Haven’t got a link to an article or anything, but in the uk there was a programme set up where they would bring reptiles into care homes and things. Whereas people would usually bring rodents or cats or dogs to entertain old people, they found that many of them were just so relaxed by the snakes and lizards- some people were even getting over their fears. A lot of people liked ball pythons because they were just so relaxed. It was a nice thing to see opposed to snakes escaping and such.

As a parent I wasn’t thrilled when my adult daughter wanted to bring home a snake. I have always been petrified of snakes. However I wasn’t worried about it getting out. It isn’t as though this snake is going to hunt me down and kill me in my sleep. I was more worried I would have to feed it. That fear came true about 3 months after we got him. I got past it and we are all good. I am actually glad my daughter got him. I have learned so much about ball pythons and he is really cool to watch. I have even held him a few times. Still not comfortable handling but no longer out of fear. He just moves so fast and I don’t know how to support him. I love your channel. Have found several of your videos helpful.

I searched my room, searched the whole house I live in, informed housemates that my snake was gone.
One week later I figured "its gone" and got another snake.
A week after this I found my first snake.

I take my BP outside to roam in the grass for enrichment purposes. I took my eyes off her for a minute (she's slow-moving, no need to track her all the time, right? Apparently not) and she was gone. I was so. Frikkin. Panicked. It's not like an indoors escape where she's limited to a room and is probably under some furniture, it was _outside._ After awhile of freaking out and crying and searching and trying to track her trail in the grass I found her under the porch and o h m y g o d i'm never taking my eyes off you again you sneaky noodle
Anyway, she's doing great to this day, but, while not super climactic in retelling, that was a hUGE freakout for me and I thought I would share it cuz heyy we're sharing escape stories ye?

That's why I really like exo terra tanks, they have their screens very securely shut, and you're able to put locks on them. My corn has never escaped, but every now and then, she'll reach up the 18 inches and poke around the top of the tank, looking for a potential escape route. I'm going to need a lock sometime very soon. Before I know it, my son (currently 6 months old) will want to play with our snake and could open up the tank if there is no lock. Gotta make sure to get it before he's walking and reaching for things.

I once had a tarantula escape and I didn’t manage to catch it immediately.
I assumed it would just freeze to death in my room (as it was winter at the time), but a few weeks later I found her under a plug for one of my lights.
Apparently it radiated enough heat to keep her alive and she was perfectly fine. I even found a molt, so apparently she even found something to eat.
That was a very nice experience, although I‘m more careful since then to not have them escape.

I've owned a lot of snakes since I was very young (got my first when I was 7, two corn snakes named King Kong & Jerry 😂), and us being stupid kids we'd always forget to put the locks on the enclosure. And sometimes we'd even leave the lid off by accident. We had a lot of escapes. One time my five and a half foot ball python got loose and my mother found her in her pillow case. She's petrified of snakes. That was a rough night 🤣

one time i was feeding my boys, and then i went to go take a shower. At one point i realized i had left the lid off my kenyan's tank. He tends to have issues eating on substrate and he gets it all in his mouth so i feed him in a little tub with no lid and i just place it in his tank. So with the lid of his tank off, hes completely exposed and would be able to easily climb out. I rushed out of the shower and ran to my room still dripping water, i swished my hand around in the substrate and there he was. He had just slithered out of the tub and burrowed away. What a good snekky boi :)

If a snake ever gets out and you can't find it right away, place a line of flour along the walls and under the doors. That way at night when your snake goes to look for some place else to hide and crawls through the flour, you can follow the trail for a little ways at least. My 3 escapees were entirely my fault since I forgot to put the lid back on. In one case though, the lock on the swinging exoterra enclosures didn't lock properly because I turned the enclosure on its side (so if you have that kind of exoterra cage then make sure you push both doors in as far as they will go before locking it). All of my snakes that escaped were found 5 feet away from their cages in the exact same spot each time.

Please do not just "use something heavy" on top!!! Snakes are much stronger than they may seem, and they may still be able to push up against a weight. Worse yet, if they do manage to lift the tank lid enough, they may then become stuck under the weight of the object and get hurt! It is well worth the investment to get snake tanks with good locks or latches. At the very least, those spring clips look cheap. Please don't use weights.

    • @onixxfilth
      @onixxfilth 6 лет назад +5

Exactly. I have a Pueblan milk snake in a 40 gallon tank and I have 4 locks on her lid- heavy plastic ones that you need to remove a pin and then pull a latch down and off of them. I tested them with my hand with the pins in place seeing if I could rattle it up and down and it barely budged.

Nice video. I'm really glad that you're helping to spread awareness about the fact that snake escapes are uncommon, preventable, and not a super big deal (by that I mean it's not like it will hunt you down and kill you).
I personally have had two escapes with the same animal. I had a wild house gecko quarantine (because it was evasive where I found it), and had him in a small tub at the time. Two times whenever I opened the tub she would take off running and disappear not to be found for a few months. She's now in a real terrarium, and healthy.

The milksnake I had when I was younger escaped once (totally my fault). Still living at home, both my parents joined the search. My mum (being very brave to help, since she is scared of snakes) proclaimed: I will not go to sleep with a snake loose in the house! After hours of searching we sat down together by the kitchen table, trying to come up with a plan for what the heck to do next - mum being scared, me crying from worry and dad feeling helpless - we suddenly heard a bump coming from the livingroom. I ran in there to find my milksnake, looking snuggly in a rolled up poster. I have never seen my mother looking so happy and relieved in my life!
I did learn something from that though; if your snake does escape, start by searching for it at the same, or a lower level then it's encloser. They almost always move downward. Also, thank you so much for making such great videos.
Lots of love from Sweden! 💚🐍

I don't have the link for you but it happened in Dallas,TX back in the 80s, my grandfather was chief of police in a city just north of there and his whole unit got called for backup.
The summary of the story is a man broke into another man's apartment and didn't know the guy let his boa free roam, the guy that broke in ended up calling the police on himself because he was terrified of the snake and thankfully nothing was stolen or damaged.

I was pretty certain he was gone for good and even replaced him but after 8 months he was found several houses over, which is pretty amazing as I live in Scotland and he survived over winter. It actually made the local newspaper. I never worked out how he got out but it never happened again. A garter snake I had did escape for good, and it was a snake a neighbour found and gave me, so this guy was a PRO.

My corn snake escaped while I had had him out. I was sitting on an office chair and he figured out how to get inside it. I took the chair apart and tried to lure him out but it didn’t work. He stayed in the chair for about two days and he finally came out while I was at work. I frantically searched my apartment, but couldn’t find him. About a week later I found him slithering across my shoes in the closet.
About four months later I forgot to put the lid back on his tank after feeding. It was off for about 12 hours but he was just chilling in his hide like a good boy. I guess my closet isn’t that exciting after all.

FYI- most screen lids are not meant to withstand weight from the top.
So if you put weight on them, be sure to check the lid often for stress cracks, bending or glue, staples, or rivets warping, etc.
This is why using brackets/clamps is a better option.

I've only had one escapee. My baby corn snake. (Shocking I know!) He was out withing hours of getting him and setting him up in a tub I thought was secure enough. Sure know better now! Found him within a few minutes of panicked, tear-filled searching. He was curled in a box maybe 2 or 3 feet away from his tub.
Lesson learned. I. Lock. All. Things. Down. Now.
I do my best to keep them contained. Not because I'm afraid of what they'll do if they get out. Because I'm afraid what the world will do to my poor, spoiled rotten, never wanting for a darned thing, wouldn't know how to care for themselves if a wikihow booped them in the snoot, noodle babies!

Thank you so much for this video! I bought a used enclosure for my new hognose snake and I hadn’t thought to check the mesh for loose areas because it all looked secure. I just found an area on the lid where the mesh is loose and popped out from the lid. She’s too small right now to reach the top but it gives me the opportunity to fix it before she gets big enough to reach it.
Edit: turns out the way the lid was constructed made it super easy to fix so I’ve already taken care of it.

My grandsons found a very young King snake and we put it into an enclosure. It seemed happy. It shed it's skin on the 5th day, so we know it had been 21 inches long. It has been eating really well, but I think it needed larger prey than the pinkies we had. We fed it after 2 days and it struck at the fook for the first time. I didn't think it could go up the glass sides that are 18 inches, but it has escaped, only 8 days after we put it in the aquarium. Unfortunately we did not have a weight on the lid. 😕 I pray we can find it tomorrow morning. Great video! I wish i had watched it a week ago!

a while ago, before my cornsnake died, it had pushed the lid off its enclosure and got out. we couldn’t find him and assumed he’d gotten out the house (they’re native to this area so we doubted he’d have a big impact on the environment) we thought he’d died outside and my stepdad wanted another snake anyways so he got a ball python a couple months later. however, nearly a year after he had escaped, my sister found the snake in the bathroom, the house wasn’t made well so we believe he had gotten into the walls and the insulation and perhaps eating mice that had gotten in the house (we had cats and got rid of mice without using poison so any mice he caught would not have poison but still might’ve been had diseases) but he was completely fine!! he lived maybe for another year or 2 after that!! and his death was completely unrelated to his escape and our care for him, RIP spike 😔

She was pretty lifeless in the tiny tank we got her in, but after setting her up with an 80 gallon vivarium and the proper heating, hides, etc, she LOVES trying to get out??? She’s such an escape artist, she’s broken two tank lids and bent the custom plexiglass doors we installed to try and keep her in her tank. We’ve inevitably had to rely on sealing all edges with duct tape. It’s sort of endearing but also a pain in the butt. Any thoughts?
