Where's Thomas? ALL ENGINES GO Clearance Sale A Disturbing Trend

  • My search for Thomas & Friends merchandise in a variety of different retailers. I find just about every other popular franchise but for some reason Thomas And Friends is missing in action. I found Bluey, Paw Patrol, Disney, Minecraft, Where's Wally, Transformers, Barbie, Hot Wheels, Peter Rabbit, My Little Pony, Peppa Pig, Avengers and so many more but Thomas The Tank is missing in action.
I have noticed the Thomas All Engines Go metal engine stocks have been removed from Supermarket toy cells. This is worrying because Thomas toys use to be a staple toy in this zone for decades. I do look at a box of Disney Cars to explain a little adult toy hunting tip. So often the good stuff is not on the pegs.
Maybe the biggest shock was seeing Thomas AEG stock on clearance in a major retailer.

Mattel single handed, killed Thomas. The amount of people who look for Thomas is at an all time low and is still dropping. Nobody wants all engines go. The Thomas and Friends brand is never going to recover, the only way they could save it is stop, wipe the slate clean, and start over again.

@@leokimvideo I personally feel that Thomas can only recover if another company, namely Orbrium, which makes their products specifically with Thomas Wooden Railway in mind, acquires the license. I started a petition to make that a reality, and it's up to 77 signatures as of this writing. A link to it is in my Wooden Railway discussion of Orbrium's Track Maintenance Crew.

I still (strongly) dislike AEG for what it's done to Thomas' legacy, but it is what it is. It's bizarre to see the complete absence of Thomas toys in those shops, since I thought the franchise was still going strong despite the existence of that reboot. In early March, I went to a Day Out with Thomas event at a heritage railway near Auckland, and the place was chock full of families.

I find these comparisons between different franchises interesting - Mattel care more about Barbie than Thomas, thats clear, and on the subject of your audience - it seems pretty broad, some are just here for Thomas, some for spiders, some for Ken the turkey, some for dashcam, some for nostalgia, etc. I personally enjoy most styles of video that you do and I'm glad you're still here. It's very unfortunate what Thomas and Friends has become, it went from a show enjoyable for all ages, to a show to keep a toddler fixated. Such a shame, most of the new product is not that great, however... It is nice how they are bringing back old characters and concepts. But yet again, it is still not in its best era. Hopefully Mattel gets their head out the mud and actually produces something everyone can enjoy, like the good old days.
I wish they could make one last model production. It would be nice

@@leokimvideo Agreed. if they want to bring Toby back, even though he really doesn't deserve to be in AEG, because he, Edward, and Henry are irrelevant, since BWBA so, what's the purpose... It is marketing. Thomas and Friends has gone down this path already, but instead of old characters, it was new ones. Model series ended due to being expensive, same with the CGI, ended because of price. If you haven't caught up on the pattern, bringing in a variety of characters for marketing will result into the show having to change ever so slightly. So, pretty much, Mattel has not learned from it's show's previous mistakes.
This proves how smart Mattel is! 😃
Now, all Mattel needs to do is stop bringing in engines and focus on what us fans want.

Such a shame how the mighty have fallen. Thomas doesn’t preform to it’s best capability without the merchandising. It showed during the the switch to cgi. I grew up around the switch and the merchandising was insane. It was the most popular aisle down in the Wollongong/Cronulla area. Kids may like All Engines Go but what good is it if they don’t have access to the toys to play with and create their own story’s,
Shows that I’d watch as a kid but not be able to get any merchandise of would never outdo Thomas, and that’s because it just didn’t connect with me and probably many other kids. And Thomas did merchandising the best as well, Wooden Railway, Take N Play, Trackmaster etc. there was something for every kid and the toys are easy to bring to a coffee shop if you want to meet up with someone and entertain your kid easily.

It's quite insane to see what was once an immensely timeless and popular franchise, that had it's name and presence known everywhere, and entire departments to itself in toy sections boil down to this in a little over 10 years. As a child I could mindlessly enjoy each and every season of Thomas, but as an adult going back for nostalgia's sake, it gets extremely irritating after corporate meddling wanted to make it more than what it needed to be. I've never seen a company destroy such a staple for kids entertainment like Mattel did to Thomas. You can't artificially add something to a franchise to make it more marketable to children, when it naturally had charm that kept them interested.

This was back in the mid to late 2000s during the Hit Era where the show was at a low point. But at the least then, the show hadn’t forgotten what made it unique, even if they’re handling of the stories was lack luster compared to the Classic Era. I think it’s safe to say the Mattel really fumbled the bag when it came to the Thomas franchise thanks to their misunderstanding of what made Thomas and Friends appealing to kids in the first place and trying to turn it into something that it never was. Mattel has shown time after time that they do not understand what the appeal of Thomas is at its core. Thomas was so popular in the 80s 90s and even early to mid 2000s and 2010s, because the characters behaved like real trains, doing real train things. No matter how weak an episode may have been, or how out of character someone like Toby may have been, in the late model series and even most of the cgi series, the characters operated on a REAL working railway. There is no thematic purpose to the characters being trains anymore. It’s a show about kids messing around with Thomas’s skin plastered on top of it and it’s not working. Thomas is slipping more and more into the abyss and it’s only a matter of time before it becomes a thing of the past. And just in time for the 80th anniversary of the franchise next year. What a shame.

It's kind of sad seeing the slow decline of the Thomas Empire. It seems like the clearance prices are the final death bells for the enterprise. On one hand, I feel bad for collectors and other people who grew up with the CGI era, but on the other, it's quite relieving to see the show finally be put out of it's misery.
Something that's really interesting, is how other companies are affected by the fall of Thomas. It's quite obvious that TTTE had a large market share, and that it's fall will inevitably cause a power vacuum. However, it's unclear who will gain the most out of it. Some obvious answers might be Disney, or Illumination, but then you also have things like Bluey added to the mix. It's a really interesting case to dissect, mainly because there are so many outcomes.
However, the most important question I believe, is now what? TTTE is on it's death bed, and it's highly doubtful whether Mattel could kick-start it again. Even more doubtful still, would be whether any company would want to buy the license from Mattel. Would Christopher Awdry, or any of his children write a third volume for the Railway Series? Highly unlikely. While Christopher Awdry was undoubtedly a good writer, I think he may have finally put down the pen after "Thomas and his Friends". However, there are some speculations that Egmont may give other people publishing rights. This would mean the RWS can be continued by fans. Something similar to what Methuen and Co. did for Winnie the Pooh. The problem is at this stage, everything is still very uncertain. Although, as an RWS fan, I think the darkest days are behind us

I agree with you man, I can't believe that we see barely any Thomas stuff on the shelves. I walked in many toy stores and in some, there weren't any Thomas toys. But I think the reason as to why we don't see any Thomas toys now is probably because the show is not as popular anymore expecially after just AEG happened.
The second reason is that many Thomas fans don't buy the toys because they are cheap and nasty, and they go on sites suck as Ebay to buy actual good merch.

Thomas is in a transitional stage, while the books are 80 years old, Thomas has only bean really in the public eye since the 1984 TV series which is 40 years. The Millennials who grew up with "Real Thomas" should fight back and demand better for their children so Thomas can still be going in the 2060s (another 40 years) with the next next generation.

I stand by what I said about how Mattel is deliberately trying to send Thomas to the scrapyard, and has been since late 2017. I personally feel that Thomas' quality can only improve if another company, like Orbrium, acquires the rights. I started a petition to get Orbrium to acquire the Thomas license, and it's up to 77 signatures as of this writing. A link to it is in my Wooden Railway discussion of Orbrium's Track Maintenance Crew.

Something I cannot wrap my head around is how Mattel had to wait for the nuclear option - a complete reboot of the franchise... to make the toys good again. @@leokimvideo their product quality is much more higher than mattel, even though they've slowly started generify-ing trains similarly to mattel, but not to their extent. Most C battery engines (james, edward, gordon, henry) have all been reduced to double A, and most don't even use their correct siderods. I think mattel must have had some influence in these sudden changes, as it explains why most classic TOMY-made characters (duck, stepney, donald... even diesel) have been discontinued since 2011-12.

Personally, Thomas died when Mattel soft rebooted into Big World Big Adventures. It took away the charm and the realism that Thomas had since The Railway Series. BWBA made less people watch it (in addition to poor TV scheduling and lack of merchandise). Calling All Engines has more or less killed the brand, Thomas is now been stripped of everything that made it unique so it could be another Paw Patrol. I dont see the brand lasting to the end of the decade now, the only thing keeping thr Thomas franchise somewhat alive is fans such as yourself and others. Such a shame for a franchise that is nearly 80 years old

If you ask me, it boils down to demand, advertising, and shelf space. Ive seen a ton a videos with AEG merch already in stores like goodwill. People dont want it. Years ago, stores had long aisles filled with Thomas and Disney Cars merch. And they had little cardboard things to help advertise the toys. I dont see those anymore at all. In the US, Walmart has changed the diecast sections a lot to favor HW more. Disney cars has 4 or 5 pegs with their stuff, most of it color changers that dont sell. A few special two packs ar always on sale. Granted this isnt Thomas, they have slowly followed the path of Cars. Cars toys do sell but only popular characters like Mcqueen. Usually background cars that barely have lines are left on pegs. Matchbox has been slowly losing its charm, they barely have pegs of their own that HW isnt taking. I think Mattel will treat Thomas like this if it doesnt get sales. I dont have anything against AEG, but if they want money they better change things up or at least show they care about it.
