I grew up in the area and have so many memories of going to this mall with my mom in the early 2000's. I always thought it should have done a lot better considering the surrounding college town but ever since around 2008 it's been in decline. I'll always love this mall, just seeing these clips brings back many memories.
Thanks for this video! In the early 90s I lived in the area and delivered papers to various stores in this mall before they opened. There were always some retirees doing their laps around the inside. But my favorite was saying hi to the juvenile alligator that the pet store had in the window. Sad to see it struggling.

Sorry I missed the live premiere, Anthony. This is a gorgeous retro mall. Your intros and background music always key. l really this vlog doc of the Nittany Mall. I'm looking forward to the premiere of your new content style. Have a great time in Cali. Be well, stay safe. Peace.
Great video! Sucks that those neons weren’t on though because they really add to the experience. This is my childhood mall. I’ve lived in this area since the 80s. A few other interesting facts, during the renovation in the late 80s/early 90s they actually moved the sears store to a newly built store (the now vacant one on the end). Sears was located just in front of the current store and that area was renovated to become part of the mall. That would be where Dino’s and planet fitness is currently. I believe the mall entrance in that area was actually the front of the Sears before the renovation if I remember correctly. Also where the vacant Macy’s currently stands used to be a Riverside grocery store that my dad worked at as a manager in the 70s. It was closed and became various other stores but the latest I can remember is geebees and Value City. I actually remember seeing the space shuttle challenger explode inside GeeBees as a young child :( When Value City closed it was demolished and a Kaufman’s was built in its place which later became Macy’s. I had a really amazing childhood in this mall. Many amazing memories, the place was packed at Christmas and just had a very special and festive buzz to it. Very sad to see it and other malls in the state they are now.
What a nice and thorough history of the Nittany Mall. You go back even further than my memories thanks to your dad working there. Thank you very much for sharing that with us
Really enjoyed and had been looking forward to seeing your documentation of this vid, Anthony! Sad to think that like so many others, this was once a thriving mall with 4 traditional anchors, all of which are gone. Glad to hear you stopped and enjoyed a meal at Perkins! One of my all time favorites! Thanks again. Looking forward to your upcoming cross country trip!
I agree, that was a great soundtrack! This video is a little different than usual, but still has your signature! Thanks for the time and dedication Ace!
I lived in State College from 2005-2017. Nittany Mall was never a great mall, but It was much better when I moved there than when I moved back to Atlanta. When I got there in 2005, all four anchors were open, Kauffman's, which became Macy's, Bon Ton, Penney's, and Sears. There was Gap, Express, B. Dalton, Sam Goody, Spencer, and other stores. For the area, which serves Penn State, it wasn't bad.
Nice, Documentary, big mall fan ,u should come Tx, at Rio Grande Valley, the mall in Harlingen is practically dead.. it has a FYI store, j.c. penny, ,Dillards, that's what keeping the mall alive.. take care sir. .
this makes me thankful that my local mall survived covid, i went back recently and it seemed pretty full. sad to see a few malls meeting their fate bc of the virus
Great job, Anthony! I like the new intro, and the ending has me so excited about your return. Please enjoy yourself, but take care of yourself. I will be thinking about you and sending you a wonderful journey! Drop me an occasional note to let me know that you're okay, and if you run into any issues please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.
This place has a rather strong Schuylkill Mall vibe to it, though, to be fair, it looks like you filmed it well before opening time. Even so, it doesn't look like a very healthy venue, especially with that 63% occupancy rate.
@@edpsblinds5118 Nittany Mall always seemed like it was just a little too far away from campus to be successful drawing in students, and there really wasn't much else around to support it. I think I went to the mall once or twice maybe in the couple years I was at Penn State...
Remember me, I have sent pictures to you from Canada 2-3 years ago. I always seem to miss your live streams so I go in on this one. I did say "hi" at the beginning but cannot find the comment. Stay safe and healthy. Have a great Trip, "Ace":goodvibes:
Never been to the Nittany Mall, but I remember Grant's. They were pretty much a Kmart-style discount store. The company went Chapter 7 and all Grant's were liquidated.
I lived at Penn State University Park Spring semester 97 (co-OP from my school in Ohio) as my bf, friends were there. I used to go here then. Sad. What a drastic change in retail! Its crazy.
That sucks big time😢. Our mall here in Cornwall, On, Canada just lost their La Senza. It is the only store here that sells nice bras for my larger size. They closed all La Senza stores, but we can still shop online. Ugh. Online shopping can be such a hassle.
My friends family owns some of the land that PSU is located on. The kids have a pretty penny coming when the Parents pass on, the Grandparents are still alive. But they've already made sure their Parents/kids are set up with the inheritance. I bet they sell the land when it reaches my buddies kids. They are already counting their coin.
Hey Anthony, once the border reopens, you should come check out the Downtown Chatham Centre in Chatham, Ontario, Canada. It's quite a dead mall and you should do for a review on it once the border reopens
I'm guessing this mall is at least somewhat dependant on business from students. With them mostly gone due to COVID, and the retail apocalypse in general, the future doesn't look bright (especially) there. Even after Penn State is totally re-inhabited, the damage will already have been long done.
Hi Anthony you have really great video content and hear that you are traveling across America . I live in Rio Rancho New Mexico and near me is the CottonWood Mall is you are interested in checking in Albuquerque and the other two malls are in uptown Albuquerque which is Cornado mall and the Windrock mall just a thought take man and keep the videos coming
Hey there I enjoy watching your videos of these walkthroughs in these malls that are dead and when you have a chance you should do a walk-through at the North Hanover Mall at Pennsylvania and the Town Mall at Westminster Maryland over about 20 miles of and both are getting to the dead point.
I went to Penn State and maybe went to this mall once to buy something. There are plenty of other stores in town and closer to downtown that students can shop at. I think mostly adult members of the community head toward the mall. The Target is the opposite side of town and so are a lot of the frequently visited stores like Wegmans.
Can’t remember the name of that pizza parlor, but I do still have a memory of it. It was right across from the EB games. These were really the only two places I would visit in the Nittany Mall. Moved away from Centre county in 2005. Live out of state now. Haven’t been back to this mall since. It was a alright place.
@@johnmason6645 That’s correct! Now I remember. Completely forgot for so long. I would go in there to grab pizza after buying a game. Then it was off to the bus from there. I’m guessing Dinos is closed now. Last I heard the Nittany Mall is even more of a ghost town these days. Thanks for giving me the name of that place.
You need to get with the program and turn these dead malls into communitiy colleges and let us put people to work building fancy new malls. Create the change you want to see
Need to correct about Penn Traffic a Department stores, that was what the company was founded as. A very large department store in Downtown Johnstown. Then they branched out with suburban department stores and also the supermarkets. The company after closing downtown’s store then left Johnstown.
To go back even further in Penn Traffic history - according to the Library of Congress site they were an offshoot of the Cambria Iron Works (later part of Bethlehem Steel) company store. The old department store building still stands and today houses the Federal Courthouse in Johnstown, among other things.
Ah Good Old State College PA mall I have been there twice once in 2008- and then in 2013. I used to live in Elk County Johnsonburg PA only 60 miles from here
IS the Gar field's Restaurant still open or is it Closed? Penn Traffic filed for bankruptcy in 2009. They owned BI-LO Quality Markets and a few others. Penn Traffic sold almost of their stores to Giant Eagle Corp in 2009.

Sadly, Garfield’s has been gone from this mall for over 2 years.
they used to have value city an arcade & record store it was a good small mall
First Grants, then Gee Bee, then Value City, then razed to build Kaufmann’s which became Macy’s and closed in April this year.
It’s a nice mall. You would think that the students would’ve kept it going.
