The World’s Largest Greenhouse Works Backwards

- The greenhouse effect is well known - heating up the inside so plants can grow in the warmer conditions. The world’s largest greenhouse, the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest at the Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, however, is a little different. Here’s how it works.
#singapore #
Gardens By The Bay is somewhere I go often but I never knew that it was the worlds largest green house. Thanks for making this video and explaining everything!
Same!
This is something that i have known for quite some time and still fascinates me every time i think about it
Fascinating that Gardens by The Bay appears in someone's list of 'places I go often'
Yea ikr
I went inside the domes
I have an annual pass to Gardens by the Bay so I'm super blessed to be able to visit the conservatories regularly. Till today, I had no idea they were the world's largest greenhouse. Thanks for making this.
how much is it!
@@darkless60 The current price is 42 SGD.
Being a Singaporean I’m really happy that other people like are filming about us and like how we are a small island we’re still known to the world 😃
Hello there country buddy
@@Maddified. hello
Same here, I didn't know that Singapore's greenhouse is the biggest even though I like going there
But what's the point bro
@@lightborn_granger Ik!!!
Welcome to Singapore! Our temperature and humidity levels are not always easy to adapt to for those used to seasonal changes. The next time I go to Gardens by the Bay, I'll have another perspective of it!
Love your work Julian - I visited Gardens by the Bay on the very first day it opened to the public in 2012 . It's amazing to see how much all the vegetation has grown in 10 years, can't wait to visit again! 👌
"typhoon rains" first I heard of Typhoons in Singapore. "Monsoon Rains" would be the best description.
Yup. Singapore, apart from being hot and wet, has very mild weather really. Winds don’t get that strong and no typhoons.
As fellow citizen I can confirm
No typhoons, only monsoons
Also hi
typhoons more common near the pacific. singapore far enough from there
Am thinking if he's referring to Sumatra squalls, whose winds I heard can reach 140km/h. Interestingly it seems that winds blow more regularly only when it rains, causing it to fall @ up to a 45° angle
great to see a melbournian content creator. Keep it up Julien!
Thanks, mate!
I love all of Julian O'Shea's content
I have learnt a lot about our beautiful city through him. Well presented, well researched, interesting and talks to the viewer as intelligent beings.
Oh sorry its Julian. Sorry about that
I was there last week! My girlfriend and I went out of our way to visit the spot you filmed on Palawan Island 😁 back in Melbourne now. I’m impressed you were able to convince the authorities to let you film with no mask!
Nice. Singapore does indeed have some strict rules. 🚀
@@JulianOShea ahem, correction *alot of strict rules*
@@justananimeweeb6696 well at least its abit relaxed now at the time im writing this
@@xxDxxism oh wow,as a Singaporean I'm embarrassed that I don't know that the rules are less strict now 🤦♀️
Please more Singapore content! I live in Melbourne but absolutely love the future technologies and uniqueness of Singapore!
He should do jewel changi airport. Im can tell you that there are some good stuff there
In the flower dome, a section is dedicated to Australia gardens
marina bay sands (a hotel) can be seen in the video
I am impressed that you can keep wearing that flannel shirt in Singapore! That alone shows the cooling system is working!
It's his trademark shirt, similar to 'The Gadget Guy' in Australia but with much better taste & style.
Great video Julian. I'll pay a visit next time I'm in SG.
On brand. 😅
My cousin wears those all the time.
I lived in Singapore for two years. Flannel button-up shirts are very comfortable and ideal for the weather. You can roll up the sleeves and loosen a couple of buttons on the few days it hits 33°C, and have them fully buttoned up when it drops to a frigid 27°C when it pours with rain.
@@tonicartos frigid 27° .. made me chuckle
Very informative. Never knew all that stuff when I visited Singapore in 2018 and where to the domes. Was merely marvelling at all the different plants, foliage and greenery amid the impressive waterfall. Thank you!
is ok ~ As a singaporean, I never knew all this stuff ~ 🤣.
I didn't even know that the dome has shade cloth
Another interesting video! Thanks Julian!
Cheers mate!
I'm from Singapore and I'm proud of my country. Come to Singapore everyone! We have good food and nice people here :). Edit: Thank you for so many likes! :)
Cool a video about Singapore and Science

awesome video, really liked your exploration of singapore and explaining a lot of these incredible future tech stuff we have here.
Any more videos in Singapore in the works?? Keep them coming!!
Awesome video. Keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
Used to live in singapore, and seeing this just puts a smile on my face
Gives me nostalgia of when i went to the flower dome :(
Yay for Singapore!!!!!!
great video!!! so informative
I loved my trip to Singapore and gardens by the bay in particular. We went right at the beginning of Covid in 2020 as a stop over to get to Sri Lanka for a wedding. Because of Covid it was so quiet and barely any lines and we were easily able to get around and see all the beautiful sights.
great video!
I went here in 2018 and it was so so cool - and the design is fascinating!
That place looks beautiful!
Beautiful
Thank you
I learn so much about where we live from your channel! Thank you.
Glad you’re enjoying it!
I remember taking a tour of those domes when I lived in Singapore. Apparently the botanists don't fully know how to keep the bigger trees in there alive, so they're basically on life support until they die, after which they'll be replaced. A bit sad really.
:( i wonder why tho! What makes those trees so weak/hard to mantain?
@@capuchinosofia4771 I think it's partly due to the fact that they were transplanted there, instead of just growing naturally.
I wonder if they got the seeds and just dropped them near the trees and just let them grow. Maybe even some companion plants too 🤔
I mean… that’s how life works in a nutshell. That’s why plants produce seeds
That's a very typically Singaporean attitude I'm afraid. If we don't have the skills, but we need to impress the foreigners, just throw money at it.
Wow this is super high quality! Keep it up!
Thanks, will do!
Ive been there multiple times. Always impressed, every single time.
Amazing, never knew anything like this existed.
Very informative
I live in Singapore and when I visited gardens by bay it great (come at Christmas there will decore)
Keep up the excellent job

Well presented and another go too place to visit, thanks Julian
Your chanel is one of those that when I see a new video, I have to stop and watch because I know whatever is covered, it will be interesting.
its a amazing place. every time i visit singapore i always visit.
This was so so interesting. Thank you!
i'unno what it is, but your vids always cheer me up when I am feeling down, so thank you
wow cool
I've been to Gardens By the Bay quite a number of times, they have seasonal plants and events and I really enjoy being there.
WOW!
Wow that's an absolutely impressive design. They spared no expenses on it. I don't think they'll ever be able to recoup their costs so whoever fronted the money for this did it out of passion rather than profit. I guess it could drive tourism but I don't think it will be a major factor.
Its partially funded by the government and its a really big tourist attraction, but you're correct that it isnt made for profit
Clever stuff indeed.
"whoever fronted the money for this did it out of passion rather than profit." lmao you can't be more wrong.
Singapore invests heavily into tourism and this project is just one of them. The fact it has garnered so much attention internationally means they have achieved their goal, i.e. to attract tourists.
If you know anything about our (Singapore) government, is that money comes before anything else. It's a common theme here and while not necessarily wrong, it does hurt us in some areas socially.
@@Mr_Tralala I really don't think people are going to be like
"Hey let's go to Singapore to see plants that we can see in their native environments"
Sure, people who are already visiting will check it out because they're there but this is not a tourism pull
@@apocalypticpioneers2116 People will go to Singapore to see the largest greenhouse along with all the other attractions. Singapore doesn't have any natural resources, so tourism is one of the main ways it makes money, besides manpower and such.
This is an amazing feat of engineering for sure, but there are questionable choices as to the environmental impact with this project. I talked to one of the curators of the Huntington Botanical Gardens a few months ago and they brought up the idea of limiting plant collections that need additional tech to survive. They used the cloud forest dome as a questionable example, being that it's so huge and houses cold growing plants in one of the hottest regions of the world. Just a little something to be aware of, though I still love the place.
@Hellequin Maskharat well from a technical standpoint, greenhouses are meant to keep heat in and need additional parts to house cool growing plants that would require regular maintenance. In addition, Singapore is a very humid country, making evaporative cooling not a good option, which means that you’re going to need a lot of energy to cool down the place compared to say a similar sized greenhouse in a less humid and cooler habitat. That extra energy usage and additional resources needed to maintain a greenhouse of that size in a less than ideal environment is very costly. I’ll double check with the curator about this but this is what I remember from my tour of the private greenhouses with him.
Yeah, Americans are always skeptical when it comes to seeing other countries’ success, especially Asian, non-Caucasian country, little do these “expert” knows the garden by the bay project has a special requirement by the Singapore government that the entire Garden by the bay include the SuperTrees and the two Domes cannot consume more energy than one commercial office building in the CBD area. Singapore is an actual first world country unlike United States, and their government is way more trust worthy with exceptional track record in sustainability and being environmental conscious, couldn’t say the same for United States
Welcome to Singapore! :)

It was a great place to work at. I used to work there before going into the army and it was fun working there. Its cool sometimes to learn about the new flowers showcased for their seasonal events and plants showcase.
Nice! My country!
Nice animations 👍
I was just reading a book about this two buildings a few days ago but it was very technical. A very complex engineering project.
Can you give the title of the book?
@@wisteriang9491 I cannot remember. But it was like a coffee table big book. Hard cover. It has many pictures. I read it at Bedok Library. It is a highlighted book on display. Same level as the entrance and next to the lift.
@@SuccessforLifester thank you
@@wisteriang9491 Although I find it technical, It is not an engineering book. It doesn't give formulas. But it describes the challenges in the construction to make the project happened. For example , no two curve metal beams are of the same dimensions. Each one has to be individually crafted.
Man would love to ride around this place looks awesome
I've cycled around the area before! It's awesome.

@@raichu5844 Why do random ppl on the street have a right to his time?
Like, just cuz one is famous doesnt mean they shud have to stop and take pics or sign shit for everyone who stops them on the street.
@@raichu5844 When he has fans that do this its understandable
"yesterday, I got an email about the subreddit, which prompted me to come in and check what was going on. In short: there was a long thread speculating about my personal life and history, including someone digging up ancient details about partners and, frankly, getting close to doxxing me. That's so far over the line that I don't really have words for it."
"he tweeted that he didn't like the Tom Scott memes on minecraft or something. Which then inevitably lead to a load of people replying to the tweet with those memes"
Like, the fact that he historically has dealt with horrible ppl from Reddit on numerous occasions gives me strong reason to not even believe shit said about him on a reddit thread of any kind. Theres a bunch of redditors who are still mad at him for closin down their subreddit they were usin to try and dox him.
@@raichu5844 Also, ive looked and cannot find any proof of the claims you make about folks sayin that on an ask reddit thread about famous ppl. The only response to such a thread i cud find with all my googlefu was this one to a post about meeting youtubers irl.
"I met Tom Scott who is a friend of a friend on a pub crawl in London. He only hung out for a single pub but he is a cool guy. I met him once at a party in York but that was before he got big."
I honestly wudnt doubt the least if these claims didnt exist at all, tho if they do exist id suspect theyre from the same kind of fans who say Karl Smallwood is a jerk in person... Who are the kinda folks who think that just bcuz theyve watched him online that means theyre owed his time and are alrdy buddies. Like i get that some youtubers are like that towards their fans, but let the recluses be and dont go around expectin them to do something theyre clear they dont want to do.
Like, if anyone is abusive its the folks violatin Tom Scotts privacy and refusin to just leave him alone. If he doesnt want to take a pic or chat with you or sign stuff then let him be bcuz he has his own shit to deal with. I dont think for a second that he is wrong in respondin to such pesterin folks with vitriol.
Very fascinating! I hope to visit next year :)
As a local I still haven't been inside. It's just out of my budget. I satisfice with walking in the various free parks etc around the island.
U should go u know. It may be pricy but it’s a wonderful experience
It is S$42 for an annual pass. You can also go for free if you look out for tours organised by the community centres. My elderly mum has joined these tours twice.
why didn't you use the sdv voucher last year
You could use the SRV in 2021.
Er if you’re local it’s $12 for 1 dome and $20 for 2 (full day admission + reentry). And the govt gave us all $100 voucher last year, so basically it’s free? And pretty sure you can afford to pay if you’re paying for the internet lmao
Congrats on your fulbright scholarship Julian.
Will we get still get the pleasure of your regular uploads after you've buggered off to the US?

That's pretty neat! Though "liquid dessicant" sounds like "dry water" to my brain... 😂 Do you happen to know what exactly it is they use?
I have read that they use a concentrated solution of lithium chloride (salt).
Maybe Sulphuric acid? It's pretty cheap.
I remembered in 2019 I went to a field trip to Gardens by the bay that place is in sinagpore
Hi julian, maybe you should also study the cons of the design as well, because a lot of plants are not healthy in that green house. So it’s a comprehensive content
Interesting to see that the plant have in them the genetic material to bloom year around. It just needs to be activated. Cool design.

They should have included plants from Antarctica, such as the two land (no idea if a seagrass grows there) angiosperms, which would be the most impressive. That way they can say they have plants from every continent.
That's the Gardens By The Bay :)
