Esto and eso are used as demonstratives when you do not know the name of an object, so you have no idea what the gender of that object is. For example, if I have a rose in my hand, and you do not know the name of the flower, you can ask '¿Qué es esto?', is like saying 'What is this/it?' So in this sense it is sort of 'neuter' gender, although that gender does not exist in Spanish. Of course, after I have told you the name of the flower, you should say 'Ésta es una rosa.' Similar is the usage of 'eso'. Also, you can say something like 'Qué es esto!' when you are scolding someone, like in English you say 'What is this!' if someone has created a mess. And someone was talking about permanent/temporary things - that is not correct. Hope this be helpful.
Yeah, that seems like a major oversight. Students not knowing how to use the Spanish neuter gender (or not even knowing there is a neuter) is a major roadblock to learning.
"Esto" is usually like talking about something close to you and "eso" is mainly from far away, like, "Mira esto quí" "Look over here" and, "Mira eso", "Look at that" that's how I read them as

*What's the difference* between etso and [este/esta]? Also What's the difference between eso and [ese/esa]? In other words, what's the purpose of esto if [este/esta] mean the same thing? The same question for eso with [ese/esa].
I remember it this way: _este_ is near, so you can see the _t_ but _ese_ is too far to see it :-] The explanation of the accents is fabulous!
Also the t is esta stands for temporary
I remember them by thinking that ese and esa are farther away, so they are smaller. Este and esta are closer and therefore larger, sort of similar to way you described.
I envision T (esta) as being close to the tower (t is a tall structure that you have to look up-to) but there are no T or tall tower to have to look up to see the top (ese (from a distance, the tall tower looks shorter, (no tall T that you have to bend your neck to see the top)

So in this sense it is sort of 'neuter' gender, although that gender does not exist in Spanish.
I love this! She makes me laugh and is ALOT more interesting to listen to and learn from!
Did you go over "esto" and "eso?" I think you forgot. Unless I missed it.
Yeah, that seems like a major oversight. Students not knowing how to use the Spanish neuter gender (or not even knowing there is a neuter) is a major roadblock to learning.
ja ja hoh
edit: lloll
Wasn't just me, went back to look, assuming I missed it.
I was waiting for that too
"Esto" is usually like talking about something close to you and "eso" is mainly from far away, like, "Mira esto quí" "Look over here" and, "Mira eso", "Look at that" that's how I read them as

Also
What's the difference between eso and [ese/esa]?
In other words, what's the purpose of esto if [este/esta] mean the same thing? The same question for eso with [ese/esa].
This house - Esta casa
This hotel- Este hotel
This (no noun only pronoun) is fine - Esto es bonito.
