BBC STUDIOWORKS TELEVISION CENTRE VISIT

The Guild Of Television Camera Professionals visited the erstwhile and much adapted (since redevelopment) BBC Television Centre in Feb 2018. Three studios remain out of the original eight main production spaces. BBC STUDIOWORKS rent the studios to production companies.

In the original plan for the development of the site, there was to be four television studios kept. Logic being half of the original eight studios should be left. Studio TC4 was marked to be kept. However later on in the plans money played a part, and building more apartments was thought to be better than keeping TC4 so it was dropped. Now in 2022, we see evidence that TC4 was greatly needed. ITV Daytime since 2018 have now block booked TC3 for Good Morning Britain and This Morning with permanent sets, meaning this vital 8,000 Sq Ft studio is unavailable. TC2 is also sublet by ITV Daytime but is available to other productions after 3pm and at weekends. TC1 is the only general large entertainment studio space available. TC4 would have offered a further 8,000 Sq Ft of space for other shows, to ease TC1, but of course £££ signs drove them to abandon keeping TC4. Utter madness!

I miss the old news studios N1 and N2 up on what was the sixth floor, entrance was via the Stage Door aka The Helios.

As of November 2022, Television Centre studios are TC1, TC2 and TC3. TC1 is used by The Graham Norton Show, The Jonathan Ross Show, Bake Off Extra Slice, Russell Howard Hour, QI, The Last Leg and Saturday Night Takeaway. TC2 is used daily by Lorraine and Loose Women, along with Peston and Sunday Brunch. TC3 is the permanent home to Good Morning Britain and This Morning who share the studio equally, both having permanent sets built back to back.

I had a walk around TVC yesterday and, I have to say, had mixed feelings about it. The fact I was able to walk right into the building, around the doughnut, was exciting, and from that perspective it felt like nothing much had changed, the history was still there. But then I walked around Wood Crescent (formerly the Ring Road) and, looking at the luxury apartments located where once Fawlty Towers or Morecambe and Wise was shot, I was starkly reminded that the heart has been ripped out of this building. It's a shame the BBC couldn't have retained the majority of the building and opened it up to the public in the same way, whilst perhaps separating off the spur to rent out to other companies or flogging off the East Tower. I still have a deep feeling of melancholy when I think about Television Centre.

Nothing to do with the bbc after the sale of the property, down to the developer to sort out with the council planning committees.

@@jacksugden8190 If they had have kept one more larger studio, e.g. TC4 it would have been a great help to productions. Now in 2019, ITV Daytime are block booked into TC2 and TC3, meaning only TC1 left for entertainment shows, and that studio is jam packed booked solid.
