I rate books the same way I rate products on sites like Amazon. If a book delivers exactly what I wanted and fulfills its purpose, it gets 5 stars. As a result, I end up giving a lot of 5-star ratings. For me, a fun, spicy romance that I’ll probably forget in a few weeks can deserve 5 stars just as much as an extraordinary masterpiece like Circe or Project Hail Mary. After all, I wouldn’t rate a pair of socks three stars just because they’re not as impressive as a brand-new, amazing TV. Different things serve different purposes, right? 😅

I really appreciate the book reviews. I'm very indecisive when it comes to choosing the best book for me. And with your recommendations it gives me a broader outlook at what's out there. It used to be the cover that got me interested the most. But now for me it's more then that. It's the feeling above all. Have a happy new year Fluer!!

I can only agree with your take on the star rating system. It messes with my expectations for a book and I end up enjoying the read less. Wishing your next year will be filled with many good stories☺️

I got two books for christmas (one of which was one you reccomended!!) And one of them I've been really excited to start reading it. I looked over the stuff I use for annotating and I'm really anticipating starting it which is really great because I haven't been motivated to read in like... two years(don't make fun of me im being vulnerable loll). But I agree with the thing of not tracking reading per month because of pressure, and also because I feel like months feel longer than they are, so we'll be dissapointed with ourselves either way. I'm so excited to read again, I hope u r too 🫶

feel the same about star rating system. it was fun, than it became pressure. and gosh, goodreads, sometimes i actually get anxious because my friends will see my 2-3 stars rating on the book they love. made myself a table in notion, where i’m planning to write brief reviews on reads
    loved this video! 🩷

Not only is this girl relaxing and tingly, but her broadly spaced almond-shaped eyes are really entrancing.

Just some ideas to rethink our personal interactions with how reducing 5 star / binary ratings are. (Consider the following under royalty-free use. Do as you wish, dear reader.):
You could rate books based on who you feel the intended audience is. Maybe the work is just poor but likely there is some demographic that you want to talk about. 'This is a fun light read, it's whimsical summer read, romantic, fanfic, based in Hobbiton - start of third age, and wonderful for any ages' is just one way to qualify a book.
Ideally there would be a #GoodReads 2.0 that talks about qualities more than just a singular rating. Probably through tags. I'm not advocating for LLMs much but here is where someone is searching for fantasy books similar to X or Y titles. Then the search can see the whimsical and romantic tags (in this hypothetical example) and the result should provide clearly similarities.
The other option is asking people to make lists of similar books. If you like A, then you should read B, C, and D. A large enough data set allows these to be community suggestions. A weighted rating might also help to limit certain themes / promote. The other thing you should do is search for fridge books (bottom 50% of related books). The concern is people will only read the most mainstream and there wouldn't be tools to find more indie writers.
    Just some thoughts.

Elise Myers has recently done a few videos on books she's read and her rating system. She's also using 10 stars and breaks it down into five categories if I remember correctly. Might be fun to check out :)
