my challenge to you.. last yr there was a 60 min bird video i think celebrating his bday.. within that video there was a clip of an NBC bob costas bit where it either was a show or a few minute pregame story about larry. It started by talking about the games superstars and they mentioned moses magic mj Barkley dr j and maybe a couple others and then said basically that there was them and then there was larry who was clearly separated from them as the clear dominant player in the league.. someone needs to find that story.. it was either in 86 or 7 im sure and it shows what the prevailing thought was at the time and that was that larry was clearly the most dominant in the 80s. and then he got injured.. but basically from rookie yr until 88 he was literally the only player who had a claim to be the best player every one of those yrs.. not saying he was every yr because others had some amazing yrs.. but he is the only one who could make the case.. kareem and dr j got old. magic took 4 or so yrs just to become the best on his team let alone be second to larry and mj missed the first half of the decade.. he dominated the 80s and missed one yr and the final one he was injured imobile bird but still had 24 9 and 7... someone should dig into his last 3 yrs where he could barely move yet still put up great numbers compared to other greats who developed back and feet issues... ie pippen hill mcgrady... also someone needs to dig into the 4 yrs after his rookie yr when he shot in the 20s at 3 and why . its simple.. look at the yrs he shot 1.0 attempt or less as compared to 1.1 or more... the 4 yrs after he avg 40 his rookie yr his coach literally stopped him from shooting because he hated the 3.. thats the difference... EVERY other yr he was 40plus with exception of 2 very injured yrs where one was still very close and the other he had major hand issues that yr... imagine had they dumped ramsey in favor of kc jones yrs earlier? bird would have most likely started at sf rather than pf and mchale would have started and maxwell come off the bench... mchale is another who sacrificed a lot of numbers for the team... he was a much better rebounder than his career avg

Some don't know... cuz they're too young & some don't want to know...for one reason or another. I've had some argue he couldn't be that good cuz he was white! That'd be like someone saying Tiger couldn't be that good at golf cuz he black! It's all ridiculous! Imo I'm praying one day there won't be a need for any of that nonsense...may not be in my lifetime but maybe in my grandkids or great-grands. Maybe it will come about in a blending where no one will be either...so it won't matter! lol We all need to come together somehow....guess I landed on my fav soap box! oops lol

There are people who can't see how great players like Bird, Russell, Lebron, Magic and Jokic are/were because these players dominated through their MINDS above all else. Some people don't have enough basketball IQ themselves to appreciate how good these players are.

I think it’s just the young people today that didn’t see the dominance n the NBA back then. You had to live through it and see it. It was a much tougher league and physical. It was more like pick up in the getto or rink anywhere. They played to win. With strength and desire to win.

It seems to me, that him accomplishing all he did in just 13 seasons WITH INJURIES makes it all the more compelling. He played hurt, no excuses and still dominated. I don't think people play with that kind of heart anymore. This is also before players started making the big money they make today.

his 1st 7 years in the league he was the best player in the nba till the injuries started taking their toll on him, but even after that he was still a top 5 player in the league until he retired, I watched him from his last year in college until he retired and a lot of people don't know that he messed his hand up playing softball you go watch his shooting in college and then watch how he shot in the pro's, if he hadn't messed his hand up he would have been a 50-40-90 for his career

Hey brother, I watch all your stuff all your Larry Bird stuff and if you ever need to know the inside scoop on Larry Bird let me know. I know almost every story inside now I went to see him play in Boston. They played Phoenix two games and then I got a satellite dish so I've seen almost every game he's played in his entire career.. I think if you take all his accomplishments on the court is toughness his clutchness his passing how his play rubbed off on his teammates. I don't think there's been another player that can touch the impact he's had for his team. Not MJ not LeBron, not Kobe. I don't think anybody if you take everything into account and the other thing is people are so concerned about his lack of athleticism. Basketball isn't just a game of athleticism. It's a game of skill and I look at it like this. The higher someone can jump that's the less time they have contact with the floor. You can't move when you're up in the air and make no mistakes. Larry Bird might not have been fast but he was quick at quick hands quick feet and that's all you need in basketball. Is that first step and then you're already past someone?

The only ones that don't know how great Larry legend is are the ones that haven't watched. I think they're scared to watch. I think they may have seen a little and didn't want to see anymore. I used to be the biggest Dr. Jay fan but when Larry came on the scene and I watched him play a couple of times I converted he did stuff that was so amazing and it wasn't athletic ability. It was his court genius that I watched. Like I've said before, almost every night he did something that you'd never seen a basketball player do before

Larry made a lot of game winning shots, probably the most clutch athlete I can ever remember, and that includes Tom Brady. Just clutch. Just gutsy. I have no idea who the GOAT is and I don't really care as long as these old school guys get some serious recognition.

It’s obvious WHO and WHY Bird receives hate or gets dismissed.
Do I have to say it ??
The same reason Jokic received negative comments from CERTAIN sports media figures.
Winning with sublime fundamentals and being #1 in league history at 🏀 iQ and at success in CLUTCH situations does not register and/or does not sit well with these certain individuals. They’re more into cowardly “Super Teams”, the slam dunk contest, “ME Ball” (that’s dribble, dribble, dribble SHOOT even if you’re double covered and you have wide open teammates under the basket or at the 3pt line... don’t ever pass, get 50+ pts per game, 0 assists even though you go 17/92 and never get an offensive board and play “Matador defense” and your team loses the game 122 - 96 because of your selfish play, but OH WELL because it’s ALL ABOUT YOU. And 99.9% of your fans consist it of 4 - 13 yr old boys who only see your PPG stat on they miss the fact that you’re shooting 19% .... THAT’s “ME Ball”
See MJ from 1984-89 or John Starks game 7 of the 1995 finals, or 3/4 of todays league.
Anyway THAT’s the type of play that these individuals enjoy. They cannot comprehend HIGH iQ play, TEAM play doesn’t register with their 1-2 digits above legit mentally RE RE minds. All of the work that Magic & Bird did throughout the 80’s showing how ball movement and team chemistry won 🏆’s got SQUASHED in the 90’s when MJ played “ME BALL” And won despite playing ME BALL. The Celtics, Lakers, Pistons and 76ers dynasties were retired and the Bulls had an expansion league with no true competition. Portland and Utah ? NO way

It's only the people that have never been in the NBA that says he's not top two or top three. LeBron has them in his top three. Kareem says he's the best he ever played against. Michael Cooper said he's the best he's played against. There's many players that says he's the very best that they played against and that's including people that played against Jordan. Jordan has him and his starting five. There's an interview. I think it's with Ahmad Rashad interviewing Bill Russell and Will still they both have them in their starting five. He was lethal

The reason I like Bird is because his team isn't the very best. Yet, he beat all Hall of Famers. The only player to beat everyone. He had no business beating Jordan the final time. He was clearly slower and weaker, hits team was much weaker and Jordan had his team. Yet Bird consistently beat legends. That's the ultimate test for the G.O.A.T. convo. Did you beat your rivals?

Bird was definitely one of the greatest. But 'dominated the league during the 80s', PLEASE. Magic Johnson (the greatest guard in the history of the sport) wears that title better than Bird. He defeated him in the 79 NCAA as a sophomore. Came out the next year at 20 years old and won his 1st NBA championship. Played one of the most historical games in the history of the sport 'switched from guard to power forward, to center'. Scored 42 points, 15 rebounds and 8 assists. Lead the Lakers to the title of team of the decade. It took Jordan 7 years to win a championship and if Magic had still been in the league during the Bulls error, they wouldn't have three-peated.
