I liked this video. It seemed a lot less hostile than the others I've seen. The only real issue is bringing up your experience every few minutes. Everybody here knows, and could probably even quote the whole resume by now. Bringing it up at the beginning is good enough, and will drastically increase the quality of the rest of the video.

Good video analysis and worth listening to your point of view. Chan was the only one that stood his ground and continued to fight on as If he was trying to survive. I honestly expected more from Ramsey, but the rest of the other competitors failed due to their sport mentality and slow execution from stand up and ground application, including Rokas. Plus, in real time situation, expect someone on the bus to have a weapon or small object like a screw driver, ice pick,e.t.c...I've seen it used before and I was also attacked one time with a knife, luckily, I carried a mace to assist me along with key techniques I've used, but hell, I live in L.A. County...lol....Good video Wolfman!!

I think how these guys fight shows you a direct background to what they have trained.
Jeff is the only one of them that's got both good grappling and good striking and good Cardio and yet hes one of the smallest but winning all the exchanges with the aggression and pressure that he can put on with really good MuiThai and a brown belt in Jujitsu that seems to be takedown and top pressure focused for MMA purposes. Sucks at dealing with weapons because hes never tried it before in the 2nd episode he talks about how thats the first time someones ever tried to hit him with "A bat" like weapon.
Seth has only ever focused on kicks and kickboxing and never trained grappling despite his Uchimata that he must have learned from Shintaro Higashi or his Sambo classes so he has to use his size to his advantage in the grappling but anyone his size or strong enough with grappling would fold him easily. Hes such a cuddly bear type person I don't think he has it in himself to want to hurt people even if they were attacking him
Ramsay is one of the slowest people due to his age and injuries and never focused much on grappling. Hes had cage fights and experience for MMA style grappling of top pressure but similar to Seth I think he would fold easily to anyone his own size that can grapple.
Mike just has his hours spent doing his self taught kickboxing styles which I don't really hate on much because Kickboxing is so simple to teach and practice at amateur levels. His grappling is the worst because hes so small and never does it, hes posted videos of him loosing matches at white belt comps even. To his positive the stuff where he has sought instruction shines really clearly in how well he deals with weapons from his time with Ryan Hoover and Craig Douglass. (you also see it reflected in Seth so you know they have practiced it abit behind the scenes).
Rokus has the size and grappling with his Aikido showing up and his Jujitsu but tends to fold when it comes to being aggressive enough and overthinking things which you see in his MMA fights hes so timid and fights too reactionary which is also similar to Seth that hes probably a nice guy and doesn't want too hurt people so hes holding back.
Matt has practice with self defence scenarios but doesn't seem to have moves that hes mastered to be useable in more worse case scenarios like getting caught on bottom and how to use your legs to defend yourself. Also seems to suffer from bad cardio similar to Seth.
Its Ironic that the skills that you see people show here are all ones they learnt from others and their own specialties are selling them short on how to fight and end it as fast as you can, besides Jeff. Its clear based on what happens the obvious self defence criteria to be the most useful is Strength, Agility, Agression, Techniques.

Good review and accurate. I think the format actually turned out pretty cool, so Kudos for Rokas on that. I think it really shows the difference between sports and combat, not that it was their intended point. All the failures of these guys ( minus Chan) were due to their sport minded training and poor execution skills, even for their sport techniques. You rightly pointed out their failure to take the high position and I was surprised none of them did the ol’ stuff the torso in the leg area of the seat trick where the victim could be ruthlessly beat to submission. It think if they get some real self defense guys in there it could be a really good show. Someone should have pulled a concealed training weapon as well, because that is what would happen on a real bus fight. Maybe they could have the moderator randomly select a guy to receive it incognito…

I think there may have been some coping in the actual episode (on the martial arts journey channel) and on at least one other channel about how intentional the "guard pulling" was on the bus. It seemed to me that a lot of them were legitimately off balanced by the lurching of the bus since the driver was instructed to make the ride rough.
This may account for even Jeff's mistakes.
And on top of that in the second episode which is in a gym it seemed like there was more hesitancy to end up on bottom from all of them.

Very nice breakdown. Regardless of contestants chosen, I think overall Rokus did a great job formatting the show. I'm curious to hear actual reactions/feedback from all the competitors, as right now, Ramsey is the only one providing insight to the behind the scenes. Definitely, Rokus went for the established names, over quality fighters, but I think the main point to the competition... or at least my takeaway, is that becoming competent in a gym (which I would say they all are... even if only amateur... excluding Jeff, of course) doesn't mean you're some expert "real world" self-defense fighter, who can dominate street fights.
In many ways, watching this, was like watching MMA 1... and I really think Rokus is on to something with this competition.
I would absolutely love to see this thing be successful enough, to make recurring seasons.
Now, I don't watch any of them religiously... but my personal understanding is that most of these guys are basically knowledgeable hosts, running a business that while certainly above a McDojo "I'm too lethal for fighting"... they are by no means experts.
The only one I watch routinely is Ramsey Dewey, mainly because he does very nice explanations, and doesn't claim to be an expert... he has a legitimate fighting record, that unfortunately was ended abruptly by a pretty bad injury, leaving him partially blind... but he's still willing to get people interested in mma, and one of the few people finding legitamacies to traditional Asian Martial Arts... which is pretty cool. To my knowledge the only videos he's done, claiming to be an expert, are responses to viral, truly abhorrent or otherwise toxic self-defense videos, warning against such dangerous techniques.
That of course doesn't make him an expert... and it would have been nice to see someone like yourself, or other smaller youtuber, in the mix, next to Jeff.
Here's hoping for season 2! Take care my friend!

    • @DanTheWolfman

Thanks. I would add it does show one has to have a self-defense mindset...to believe it is actually a thing. • @justafan5179
      @justafan5179 Год назад +1

@DanTheWolfman you're welcome, and certainly correct regarding the lack of experience and " self defense mindset" attitude. For what they are worth (I'm sure with many grains of salt) supposedly Ramsey said he was under the impression that self defense implied immobilizing your opponent, while minimalizing damage to yourself and opponent... emphasizing excessive use of force. Now, I can't speak to that, but I know police and security train extensively for what exactly self-defense and excessive-force entail... and I'm certain Ramsey doesn't have that training. I also know, in any competition, if rules are left to an individual's assumptions, then certainly there is a huge room for misunderstanding.
As for Mike, I've never watched his content... not really my genre... he definitely comes off as a stereotypical "tough guy" and if this competition shows anything... it's that you have to be able to back that attitude up... which it would seem Mike doesn't. One interjection I will make, is that Mike did release one video, evidently a few weeks ago, about episode 1, and does say he had 0 experience in such a situation, then goes on to say that while the first time on his back was an accident... for him it worked... so he continued to implement it from there on out, for each fight he was in, on the bus... so it was intentional.
To your points though... that doesn't make it a good idea at all... and as we see with Jeff, a little experience goes a very long way.
      Take care Sir!

Quick Edit while I remember: Self Defense expert should not fall on his ass, Dan, we both know that shit happens, things don't always go the way we think they would, it's your ability to improvise, adapt and overcome with the skills you've got that determines if you can be called a ''self defense experts'' tbh.

Edit: I realise now that I may have been unclear, what I meant by being ''able to hang'' with Jeff is that they were able to complete the same challenges with mixed results, obviously Jeff will whoop them in a fight, he's got an even bigger advantage against Ramsay who was a professional fighter but he got fucked up and he's got a blindspot in his eyes now, the medical term is is a ''scotoma'' which is a significant disadvantage.
I see where you're coming from though, they all made serious mistakes such as Seth going for the classic chicken wing grip like a school bully relying on his size rather than a martial artist who knows what he wants to do but I honestly think a lot of this comes from the fact that they don't have real life experience, it's all theoretical.

@@DanTheWolfman Definitely you being a lot more experienced would know better what is or isn't BJJ and would perhaps use different techniques and react differently and being an actual practitioner you'd see it from a different perspective. That's why I find your commentary very interesting and largely eye opening. But nevertheless, as a spectator, watching hundreds of BJJ vids, whether it's ring fights or tutorial or other, the tendency of BBJ practitioners to fall on their backs and try to fight from there is objectively more than evident. The Gracies spent most of their matches with Sakuraba on their backs. Ramsey and Icy Mike are always ecstatic about BJJ. Whatever their experience with the system is, it really seemed that they were more focused on validating BJJ within the bus scenario rather than adopting to the situation.

I was subscribed to all these guys for over a year. Episode one of the championship, and I realized I'm a better fighter than everyone there. And I'm definitely not an expert. Jeff Chan has good skill, but I'm too big for that to be fair. If he were my size, he may actually have more than a 50/50 chance on me. But the rest were a total disappointment. Rokas is fairly humble, and so I can't really hate on him, but I'm gravely dissatisfied with the rest.

Those guys put their money where their mouths are. It costs you nothing to sit back and criticize. Again, if you do know something they don’t, I’m in. Just put ur money where your mouth is.
