Below is what I think should apply to the majority of people "investing" in this hobby. Though I will say that people deserve to enjoy their hobbies and should definitely allocate money for fun. But spending a good chunk of money on pokemon cards before #3 or #4 below is just not smart for the time and effort it'll take to make similar returns on investing. Order of Investing (not financial advice): 1. Savings (3-6 months worth of expenses rounded to the nearest $1,000) 2. 401k Employer match (basically free $ and it's a pre-tax deduction) 3. High Interest Debt (pay the one charging the highest amount of interest first) 4. Max out HSA if you have a high deductible plan (triple tax benefit) 5. Max Out Roth IRA (tax free distributions once retired) 6. Max out 401k (Can be Traditional or Roth depending on where you think your tax rate will be at later in life) 7. Alternative Investments 8. Low Interest Debt (generally anything 4% and below is best to pay as it comes due because the additional cash can be put into something with more upside)
I’m sorry, but this information is far too practical for Pokémon RUclips. All we need to do is buy 1000 of the next magikarp or bubble mew on a 29% interest credit card and we’ll all be rich
The amount of cash people are leaving out on the table by not even matching their work's 401k contributions is likely more than they'll profit in buying/selling (relatively) small quantities of pokemon cards.
They literally could have sold everything at 200 all 600 boxes I don't understand I would have covered their fees and some shipping now they're making less cuz they're still paying fees and shipping😂
I like many others probably over leveraged my Credit Card - but I saw the hype and the price was right, so I sent it - didn't want to live with regret of not buying enough. What I learned from all of this is I need to stick to a system that works with both Bull and Bear Markets. Maybe there won't be as much on the shelf, but that's Okay, as this is a marathon and not a sprint. I should start saving up to get prepared for the 60% off market period - I've seen that happen with the days of FS and CR going for 70-80$. Anyways its always a good idea to ask yourself why are you investing all your time and money into the hobby, and for me its to reach freedom earlier in my life. Just remind yourself of your why when your making decisions. Cheers!
High interest savings account are a great place to hold Pokemon spending money :). Still getting 5% interest while it's waiting to be spent on some cards.
My 2c is it really depends on what you want to do. Leverage and loans are powerful tools to build wealth, but as you mentioned carry a lot of risk. With something like long term Pokemon investing it makes no sense to do. Even the people trying to do short term flips don’t understand making sales isn’t a certainty
I wouldn’t have been able to buy 2 cases of lost origin for $155 per box off pokemon center and a case of Brilliant stars for $155 per box also off pokemon center and a case of silver tempest for $130 per box and battle styles for $100 per box all around the same time just a few months back without getting a new 0% interest for 18 months credit card. Two kids gets you $6000 back on your taxes and the credit card gets me 1.5% cash back too so yeah 🤷♂️ I think Eli is the one who convinced me Alex 💀
U have a point- for people who do shows or have shops- if they are the main person for biz- what happens for that weekend show, live event or whatever when ill.. hmmmm. I appreciate your info- Hope u get to feeling better soon Alex!
TLDR; *There is no such thing as a free ride.* Risk is everywhere. It’s a part of life. When it comes to investing, risk starts the moment you lay eyes on an asset. I let go of 16 surging sparks packs at $3.60 per pack because I thought sleeping on the decision was a good idea at the time. Turns out impulse buying was the move, in that case but I didn’t know it at the time. That is the nature of risk. There are so many moving parts but people just want things to be simple.
I bought an evolving skies booster box for $650 because it seemed like a no brainer easy triple your money in 5 years type thing. I bet people on r/pokeinvesting would’ve told me not to if I asked them first and probably would’ve thought I was stupid
Best thing my father ever taught me was to “postpone gratification”. When you are paying cash and things start to go up naturally over time you get to the point where you’re playing with house money. I don’t think enough people realize or understand how rewarding that actually is because of FOMO and short term mindsets.
Always appreciate realness and authenticity with you when it comes to the tcg. Liquidity when it comes to hobbies is definitely uncertain. Just because something is worth a certain dollar amount doesn’t mean that’s what people are willing to pay for it. Keep doing your thing and congrats on acquiring a distributor btw. Looking forward to buying products from Nostalgia Nomics
Need to say what the truth is about the dump. They saw surging sparks at $180 and thought, well Prismatic is trading double before release, and likely to jump higher. They figure dumping everything to take on prismatic is a better play based upon position. Not everyone has a bankroll, and they had to choose their spots and if they doubled up, they will double up again. Strategic move clearly in my opinion by this person. That was a $50,000 profit they took, and that is a ton for a small shop to take in a few weeks.
Appreciate your videos. This hobby has changed my life not financially (yet) but it’s definitely given me something to look forward to. Get well soon 👍
Probably the smart thing to do would be to do a risk analysis (short term and long term)before you go in on anything, but I guess a lot of people don’t have the foresight for that? Regardless, feel better dude.
Selling off all my old x/y & s/m era junk now to buy up multiple current s/v era BB's to sell on the next big market upturn after we enter our next downturn whenever that might be
How did you manage to get those cases in the background? Do you work with a distributor? Do you buy directly from Pokemon Center? Or, is it mostly from TGS?
Cases have been pretty available for modern sets the last 3-5 years on release for people to buy in at low cost. If you buy one or two on month you too could look like this.
At 32 Ive gotten back into the card side of Pokemon and im a 9-5 guy so what’s the best way to go about getting those older cards from when I was a kid? Do I save up money and buy graded or buy raw? I’m not looking to get rich but I’d like to have a nice collection I could pass down to my son when he gets old enough to take care of them
@ I don’t really know anything about the grading side of things and I think I’ve spread myself out way too much 🤣 I have a stack of ungraded cards that range from 30$-100$ at psa 10 from newer sets like 151. Is it worth taking the risk to have them graded? I jumped in without knowing what was going on and now I’m kind of lost
tbh I have a job and do well , but honestly the market frenzy has sucked me in . I have spent way more than I should. The fomo is easy to give into and the “scarcity” of things makes me want to not miss out.

Thanks for the advice Alex. Yeaa... I really want to stay on the right path right now.. I'm in debt right now, plan to sell some of my psa collection and pay off the debt. After that, i will make a target on every set carefully 😊

Such odd timing, I literally just lost my so-called safe tech job. Now what? Luckily most of my Pokémon investments were cash but I still have debt unfortunately elsewhere, should’ve listened to Dave Ramsey more! 🤦♂️
Nooo! Really sorry to hear this. I have had multiple friends and family member go through the same thing this year. Hope it doesnt take you long to find something!
@ thanks dude, coincidentally I started this business a few months ago and channels like yours are helping me grow so I truly appreciate what you do for the community 💪
One of the biggest reasons I never went to school for it the business people in the tec industries don't care about anyone. I work in a hospital on the business side my job pretty secure cause the nurses don't have enought time to do everything and their cnas have to help them lol
I’m curious why sell at 250 when market is 220. I’m even if you bought 10 cases or 60 boxes that’s only losing 1800 bucks which is a lot for sure but you know pokemon has a history of printing to demand. I couldn’t imagine them letting surging sparks do this to the market because then every set after is at risk of out pricing your average consumer and collector and those are the people that keep the tcg alive? If we all invest to the point people don’t buy and collect or are frustrated with the market they move on… there’s a lot of things to collect and the average lifespan for a pokemon hobbyist is only 1-2 years…
Man, I can't believe people actually go into debt to buy pokemon cards. That's just gambling addiction 😅. I spent like $500 of free money I had, and I feel guilty
There are a few creators on finance, when they start speaking about selling and fear you just know the big resets are less than a month away and they will do “told you so videos as follow up” PokemartUSA and Nostalgianomics are likely to be two of those channels in Pokemon, if Alex makes this video know that Prismatic Evolution hype won’t be as Surging Sparks as free non-existing money train stops after the big orange guy actually gets into office and hype dreams calms down. Y’all just refuse to understand that internet runs every market demand and volume since 2020
No investment is risk proof. You will never make serious money if you don't risk your money in a smart way. One should have multiple investments, not just Pokemon. All markets go up and down. The people who will come out on top are the people who don't freak out when this market drop happens.
You need to get a substitution crew for when things like that happen or family emergencies so your business still keeps pumping you got to find some trustworthy people. Debt helps when needed😅
Just think of being sick at not full capacity you're on a vacation you astric this in as a vacation and unfortunately you and your wife or significant other are going to have to bite the bullet elsewhere unless you make up those sales and go like 12 hours streams in a couple of days or something Love to see the bags under your eyes and how sleepy you'd look
Pokemon is like stocks, I think people will refuse a 100% gain, in hopes of 1,000% gain. If you have debt or are moving money into different sets, sell at 100% gain, and move on. Nobody is going to laugh at you if you double your money.
Hi, new subscriber here. Looking into investing but can’t find a distributor that calls or emails me back unfortunately. Wondering if you knew anyone that will deal with small start ups?
I used to always think cash is king and you just have to figure out a way to make more. After seeing investments, everything has changed. Cash is now a liability for a number or reasons.
Pokemon is an alternative investment. If you have consumer debt and you haven't maximized your contributions to an IRA and 401k, you shouldn't be investing in Pokemon, Magic, Crypto, Sports Cards, Funko Pops, or any other alternative investment.
He’s the one who convinced me this actually works (quite convincingly and quickly too) as his channel grows this market will too. Alex is the 🐐 of Pokémon investing. His channel only had 5,000 subs at the time I started watching him and I felt like I was putting the tinfoil hat on when I first listened to this crazy man in his closet talk about investing in Pokémon cards 😂 but nope this shit actually works and he seems to be right 99% of the time too. Definitely the smartest in the space💰
I think this is like Tulip Mania. Adults with this real money are going to need houses and life purchases, retirement? Kids are NOT gonna support these card prices. Literally sellers buying off sellers it’s just a circle ⭕️
Collectibles have always been a part of life. It just seems weird to some that in this generation its Pokemon Cards. Other generations have collected Art, Wines, Classic Cars, War Memorabilia, antiques, etc. There will always be collectors who pay up for item so i dont think its Tulip Mania or anything like that.
@ I dunno….Sticks outside on the ground are ALL 1 of 1 but they are useless. Cars can be driven, Wine can be consumed, Art can be admired for the skill it took to create. I’m Just looking at it objectively I guess…

Nothing about that tcgplayer sale made sense - there’s “risk management” and there’s “oh shit I have bills due because of bad decisions”
@@pokene_pokemon as rattle would say I think bro just wanted to be g baller flipper dipper flex master.
When Brian is giving someone a hard time about risk management, you know it's bad. 😂
Only other thing I could think of….. is wanting to quickly invest into something else like crypto

Debt is funny. It's like fire; useful and dangerous.
Dont get burned people. Smart money is key!
I used to always think cash is king and you just have to figure out a way to make more. After seeing investments, everything has changed. Cash is now a liability for a number or reasons.
Buy low sell high
No risk if you can't find product 😂
TLDR: Don’t spend what you can’t afford to lose
Would you say the lugia v alt art from tempest will go up if the set is starting to get looked at more?

What’s upppp!
Pokemon is an alternative investment. If you have consumer debt and you haven't maximized your contributions to an IRA and 401k, you shouldn't be investing in Pokemon, Magic, Crypto, Sports Cards, Funko Pops, or any other alternative investment.
AFFIRM my sugar daddy 😂
Anyone selling boosterboxs at 60% hmu lmao
The realest!
The fomo continues.
FOLKS!!
You’ve achieved influencer status. People listen to you.
If you had time for it you could do a basics of investing series.
Folks!
