Every now and then, there's a pairing of director and actor that becomes cinematic magic. The pairing of John Woo and Chow Yuen Fat was such a pairing.
@@investinfastudios In interviews, John Woo has cited the films of Scorsese as an influence, but I also see the the influence of Sam Peckinpah on his work, specifically in the slo-mo action scenes.

The scene with "Mark" lighting a cig with a counterfeit bill is the shot of legends. But I'd argue the restaurant scene is what made people never forget the name John Woo and Chow Yun Fat
Hong Kong truly was a trail blazer for world cinema during this time. There will never be another Film like A better tomorrow in the current sphere of cinema today

There used to be a good quality upload of the full movie. Sad it's been removed. I watched this as a kid and the music still sticks, really good score.
The very first shot is the Honk Kong Bank, built just before Better Tomorrow was filmed. It's a groundbreaking work of architecture by Norman Foster, the company where I worked in the UK. Every time I visited HK, I was even more excited to visit the film locales than I was to visit the bank. :) Major props to John Woo.

Masterpiece. Can you imagine this remade these days? They would have to state everything....Ti Lung would tell Chow about that nightmare and how much he cares about his brother. Modern writing is terrible and then there's the box ticking aspect which would destroy a film like this.

Absolutely glorious film - sensational pacing, masterful characterisation, top performances all round, soundtrack is amazing. Perfection.
Such an iconic beginning. These 7 minutes effectively kick started John Woo and Chow Yun Fats movie career
