From what I can gather:
- There actually were 5 in the beginning, and my speculation tells me all 5 kids were looking down the well to 'scout out ' the ritual place. No one had been chosen as the sacrifice just yet, though.
- Judging by the number of sheep crowding around the well at the end, everyone's either part of some cult, and/or it's herd mentality. Either way, the girl ends up being chosen as sacrifice, and the brother could only reluctantly agree after the other kids convince him (referring to the part where the girl runs after them in the 'sheep's stomach', seems like the brother was last to turn away).
- Aftercredits show the well flooding up, so maybe the ritual became the reason why the world flooded. The brother finds the girl in the beginning since she floated out of the well, and it also explains why he also said 'I thought you were dead' after fishing her out (and her reasonably attacking him at first sight).
- Whatever that ritual was for, the results were definitely not what they were looking for. The girl becomes a vessel for some sheep creature (could also be metaphorically taken as resentment building up in her over the betrayal), weird ass creatures have spawned out in the world (could also speculate they were once people of their own kind too who went through something similar to the girl and was consumed by their creation), and the world, again, gets flooded.
- Definitely war allegories -- sheep & rabbits are easily representative of soldiers & innocent victims of the war (loss of innocence; herd mentality; disposable/sacrificial lambs to the cause). That whole system the tall dude had with collecting/ironing skinsuits and hanging up bloated people to dry could also be about drafting people, while the school segment is for raising kids to be the next soldiers. _No idea with the stork/pelican & horse(?)/whale-thing segments, though, and why those ash-kids decided to Lord of the Flies it up in that place._
- It's possible the whole ritualistic sacrifice has something to do or at least has some kind of relations with the movie in the cinema, like propaganda taken too far.
[SPOILERS BUT:]
There is a secret 'ending' to the game which basically offers an extra cutscene post-credits, and what I can gather there, it's possible the girl wasn't the first to be sacrificed.
EDIT: Just some additional food for thoughts:
#1: I've noticed multiple people noting themes of loss of/dangers of _childhood_ innocence throughout the game:
- There's the ice cream truck which obvs gives major nostalgia, but the man in particular---apparently dubbed the Sniffer---gives off mad child predator vibes, especially when taking the kid Hood to the cinema of all places.
- There's the bird---dubbed the Pelican---that still comes off as a stork to me, more so with it being a symbol of life (shout out to @Sanas_Shy_Language on that info), but in particular the idea of a stork snatching up a kids almost gives off similar vibes of women who steal others' children to raise as their own.
- There's the school that could also be an orphanage seeing how the spider thing has been dubbed the Mother, but also the damn ash-kids basically being bullies. There's some layers of kids feeling unsafe in their environments here, maybe also a dash of brainwashing of some sorts.
- The creature you blast the cannon on has been dubbed the Brook Horse, which is based off the Swedish mythological creature of the same name -- they're known for luring people, particularly children, onto their backs so they could drown 'em. One of them ol' 'wives' tales you'd tell kids about so they'd behave' kinda creechers.
#2: I'm wondering how the 'boss monsters' in each location are related to each respective kid they're messing with. If I recall, it's mentioned on the game's website that fragments of the children's past are used as inspiration for not only their designs, but also the bosses. The most blatant one would be the siblings', as the Sheep Beast represents the cult in itself and/or being victims to the pressures of a cult/herd mentality.
#3: I'm feeling more convinced that all the kids have already died and were brought back to life. Each kid's 'hats' have something to do with _(AGAIN TO DO WITH SECRET ENDING SPOILERS):_
- Hood has a patch on the face area = shot in the face
- Bandage's entire head is wrapped = got blown up by some explosion
- Bucket is a.. bucket obviously = tossed down a hole like a bucket into a well
- The Brother has a noose around his neck = lynched
- The Sister wears a rabbit mask = explained in main story
The bigger question here would be whether the other kids were killed as sacrifices, too, or because they're found out to be part of the cause of the world going to shit, or some other third option that drove them to their death. All of the kids are represented by rabbits after all.
#4: Hood mentions in the beginning that they _knew_ the siblings would be back, and to leave while they still can. Most likely, Hood has had to either partake in or even lead the acts of the ritualistic sacrifices of other kids before, and it's pretty much confirmed that multiple sacrifices have already been done when you compare being all 5 kids shown in the beginning, then only 4 at the end, in addition to the secret ending cutscene (shout out to @Candy_pop_arts on the info). Now that the world is a mess, though, the siblings could've taken this chance to escape from this supposed cult's control by them being assumed dead (especially the Sister) and just running away. _If only._
The pelican whatever could represent something to do with the resentment you mentioned. Or perhaps guilt within the two kids they got at that point? Because the seagulls all swarm and try to attack them? Which could be a visual representation of some sort of feeling? I don’t know for sure though.
@Bbean319 It's interesting because storks(which is what I believe the bird is supposed to be) are generally symbols of life, new life specifically, but they also happen to be heavily associated with souls. Also, they are said to be a sign of protection from fire and were the inspiration for the phoenix, which is interesting since the stork seems to die from a fire.
This is my take on this: the 4 kids kill the girl to make a deal with a sheep god/monster(someone might have told them or they find out about the, god? By themselves in the orphanage) for food and water in the war they were in but it didn’t go as planned, the sacrifice of the girl seemingly made the well overflow, which is what started the flood and for the fact that the girl is first found floating in the water and attacks the boy(her only memory of him is him looking down at her) and made the “food” aka pigs look wrong, especially when she slowly gets her memory back, plus The Girl's dress getting bloodier, which is a thing for periods (especially since she also has bad pains and cramps as the story goes on).(someone else said this but “She isn't the first to be sacrificed. Not even close. At the start of the game, we see five figures look down the well, and after we flash back to the scene where the others throw her down there, we only see the other four. This isn't the first time they've done this.
And in the secret ending, when we see that there are others down there who also wear masks like she did, that practically confirms it.
I think what happened is that when their rituals still weren't working, the other four kids decided that The Girl was next to be sacrificed. Only this time, it worked.
I think the reason why is because the well now has enough souls.
So, the other kids (The Boy, Bucket, Bandage, and Hood) are all killed in various ways, because this is a horrible and brutal world, but they don't stay dead, because thanks to their ritual, nothing does anymore.”. And I love that) and for them to actually get her, they got what she loves the most in the war, her pet bunny. And I think the sheep has the anger of all the dead kids in the well, that why the sheep was eating the other people and them too including the bunny girl(I don’t know why the sheep ate her tho, maybe to understand her anger or something) or it’s a afterlife, when you open the coffins and these shadows seem to show them(the kids) dying. She wanted to them to be punished, for something to happen to them -for a reminder of what they did. But I don’t know, that’s just what my take for this :3

The final scenes are flashbacks! They sacrificed the girl down the well, which then flooded the entire place. The boy then finds his sister in the boat and she tries to kill him because of the whole sacrifice thing. He thought she was dead and she wants to know where the others are out of suspicion.
So the game is played like what the ending is first? Because we find the girl drowning at the start of the game

@reggielacey2235 More like: the girl (and us) only gets little glimpses of what happened to her (the well) at the beginning and throughout the game. The girl only remembers what happened to her fully, shown through a flashback, after she's eaten by the sheep. It also serves to explain to us why the world exists the way it does in renewed context.
I love non-linear story-telling :D it builds the question of: "Why?" and then makes us go: "Oh that's why!!" at the end, instead of making us go: "Okay that's why." at the beginning. More exciting and intriguing that way. If we knew about the sacrifice before we got to know the characters, it wouldn't be as impactful.

I think the 4 hanging bodies killed by a firing squad are a stand in for the 4 kids who sacrificed the girl. The bodies all have circles drawn on them like the well.
I don't know if the whole game is the actual world having been transformed or if it's a purgatory. If it is a purgatory, im pretty sure it implies the 4 kids were executed for killing the girl

I get that sometimes, I think a big ahh bird flying high in the sky creates a big ahh shadow for a split second
There are hidden coffins showing the other kids being killed so I'm guessing they're in some kind of loop where they need to sacrifice someone to reset it or something. Also, the initial soldiers offed themselves after seeing the children with one of them blowing a whistle before doing so as if to warn others. Makes me think that people know about the children.
To be fair, the whistle might have also been because he offed himself with a grenade, and didn't want anybody else to get hurt in the process.
Im pretty sure that when they surrounded her at the end, when they had a lamb and a knife, they may have cut her open and stuffed the lamb into her, and then tossed her into the well. The flashbacks may have had double meaning of the lamb gestating inside her until it was grown enough to be "born". Thus, she was weakened after the lamb crawled out and got away, becoming the monster born out of that sacrifice they made out of her

Okay, so. From what I’ve seen on the story, it can be interpreted like this: the corruption of the world and its animals/people began with the kids and that blood sacrifice you see them doing. The entire end of the game, starting at the blood sacrifice, is a flashback.
Realizing they may have made a horrible mistake in doing the blood ritual, the children sacrifice the girl to the well, believing sacrificing an innocent life will make everything stop before it gets worse. Instead, she becomes possessed by the entity the children summoned and is brought back to life by it. The well overflowing after this occurs is symbolic; the damage done by the children is spreading and can no longer be contained. This directly results in the ocean area forming, and prompts the heavy military response in an effort to get the situation under control, even though it’s a battle they simply cannot win.
When the boy says “I thought you were dead” at the very start of the game in the boat, he really did believe his sister was dead because he was responsible for her death. The girl tried choking him out upon waking up because she remembered being thrown down the well.
And there you go, that’s basically the lore! There are a couple different variations on it but that’s the one I’ve seen tossed around the most.

It's like little nightmares 2. There is a war against terrorist or cultist and u are part of cultist side. To win the war you are sacrificed into the sheep. You try to save you from them but it's a never ending cycle of getting sacrificed and mistreated. It's like how little nightmares 2 six betrays you and you try to break the cycle as the thin man. Just for it to repeat anyway. This is purely hypothetical and a theory but this is my understanding of it.
