You just saved my life (well, my lawn anyway) as when I got my Empress lawnmower out of winter hibernation last week it started and then died after a few seconds. Anyway, I went onto youtube and found your video which gave me the confidence to strip down and clean out the carb over the weekend. Hey presto (well, 6 hours later - I'm not a mechanic!) and the lawn mower not only started up after 2 or 3 pulls but ran perfectly without cutting out! A miracle.. even the missus clapped her hands with delight! I also had the "fast running" issue.. the mower seemed stuck in max power mode, but following your suggestions on how to adjust the governor / throttle etc I soon fixed that as well. I now feel like a lawn mower repair superhero. So thanks again - your advice and videos are great and very much appreciated!

thank you for this excellent video. I have one of these that refused to start this year.
Turns out they dont take well to the new E10 fuel.
I drained the tank (had to replace the fuel line as it was aged/cracked) and filled it with Super unleaded (!)
It still wouldnt start so I set about removing the carb and disassembling it to clean it. It was caked with a white crystaline residue from the "bad" fuel.
I used your video as a guide to help me put the carb and throttle linkages back together as in my original haste I forgot to take pictures.
The old girl started on the first pull, and I am most pleased.

Tecumseh, was one of the first engines I started with many years back. A lot of guys complain about them but I still like working them when I come across a mower with one. Usually on snowblowers today, but I did come across one awhile back in real bad shape. Did a video on that one with my grandson, it is his first engine. Nice to be able to keep these form the scrapyard & help someone that is in need,
    Stay well, Joe Z

Great video as usual with lots of detail. Much appreciated.
I'm working on the same mower myself today but this one has a leak from the fuel tank outlet pipe....and the previous owner has sheared off the oil drain plug on the underside. Also cleaned the carb and replaced the carb bowl seal which was leaking.
I'm learning that spares are not readily available so I'm probably going to look into getting the drain plug sealed with a weld if possible or maybe even fibreglass.

I split the carb cleaned out the jets and now it starts but its stuck on full revs and it doesn't shut off when i close the throttle. I've got a few things to try having watched your video so I'll give them a go and let you know what happens. Thanks again for the info.

Good mower. I have a briggs one, i would not touch a tecumseh variant. Very reliable since new in 95. Used in conjunction with a petrol cylinder mower. I do believe that in the vid, the float bowl was put back 180 degrees out. The lowest bottom indent is meant to be opposite the float hinge to allow free up & down movement of float.
Have had various other rotary mowers as well as the empress. Hayter, toro and a couple of others. Hayter self propelled goes along too quickly, especially with taller grass. Empress is as good as any of them.

You'll prob know the stick out thing is a pawl, the briggs mower I had have plastic ones and twice they wore away when the top cover was loose when a bolt at the front was missing, so when I started it for a season, each start was making it move and wear away as I pulled it. I've saved the engine for a future project but I've learnt from that.

I can't believe what you can't solve...that's what kids in high school solve.
Unfortunately, you didn't know how to fix it! Because you don't know! And that's a banal thing. Funny. Well, it can be adjusted with a screwdriver using those two screws on the regulator in 10 seconds !!!! One is for minimum or empty throttle and the other is for maximum throttle. That is all wisdom. So easy and so hard...hahaahaha
You didn't do anything...you just disassembled the carburetor without need and without effect.
It works the same as before disassembly. Only washed the lawnmower. And it's not servicing at all.
It was only necessary to adjust the gas on the regulator with screws and everything would be ok...and it was solved in 10 seconds. The regulator is not adjusted and that's why it works like that. But you don't know that there are those screws on the regulator...you didn't even notice them.
