I like them both but I like Nancy Drew more and Hardy Boys even more then Nancy and other series even more but my all time favourite series is Judy Bolton books
@@beautifulminutiae if you read some I’d love to hear your thoughts on them I personally think they are the best series because as they go along the characters grow
Hi Tiffany. I was born in 1950 so I enjoyed both series. And no, our parents had no clue where we were!! We all ran around and explored, even alone. It never occurred to us that anything bad could happen. We rode our bikes within a 2-3 mile radius, sometimes more. I loved the Trixie Belden books slightly more than Nancy Drew but I binged on all of them. I remember being so envious that Nancy had an annual clothes allowance. What? No Bess George or Ned? And I even remember Honey’s last name. Wheeler, right? I remember Jim too. Ahhh the good ole days. (Another book was Trudy Phillips, New Girl. I can’t remember if it was part of the Trixie Belden series or not). This was so much fun. Thank you!
It’s so interesting how much times have changed! I absolutely can’t fathom running around and my parents not knowing where I was 😂 But growing up in the city in the 90s is a very different situation than the 50s. Yes, Honey’s last name was Wheeler! Good memory! I haven’t seen Trudy Philips yet, but we only own the first couple of books. It’s fun that you read both series! Glad to bring some nostalgia to your day 😊
I will tell you, I much preferred Trixie Belden over Nancy Drew. The reason is that Nancy was always so perfect at whatever she did! No room for improvement there! If the story had a dancing theme, Nancy would blush prettily while everyone admired her abilities and the professional ballet star would encourage her to me a ballerina. Bess was slightly overweight, like ten pounds, and was ALWAYS hungry and eating. They might as well have just called her a pig outright! With Trixie, she improved over time but still made mistakes and wasn't the absolute best at everything she tried. Sorry to go on so much, but that always bugged me! I know I'm late to this video, but first I've seen it! Hope the visit with your parents went well!
I feel like Nancy Drew was written in a time where children’s literature was focused on having “good examples,” thus why Nancy was so perfect. I think Trixie was meant to be more relatable and have character growth, like you mentioned. The fat shaming with Bess is one of my least favorite things about Nancy Drew 😭 since Bess wasn’t in the book I read, that meant I could pretend that wasn’t a thing in the other books 😜 I don’t blame you one bit for liking Trixie better! I definitely think that my nostalgia influenced which one I liked more. I had no nostalgia to temper my annoyance with Trixie as a character, but I did have it to feel less annoyed by Nancy’s perfection 😂
I grew up reading both series; I believe my mom gave me the Trixie Belden books (as someone who grew up in the 50s), while I got Nancy Drew books from the library. I enjoyed both, but I think my issue with Nancy Drew was the way she might be reinvented between different books, as Carolyn Keene was a group pen name for many ghost writers. She didn't feel as solid. I did love George and Bess, but I also loved Honey and (I've forgotten the name of the adopted brother with red hair, apologies!).
That's a great point about Nancy Drew. Nancy Drew books are still being written, so there has been many different versions of Nancy. I definitely prefer the classic ones with the yellow spine, but I don't think that even all of those were written by the same person. I could see Trixie Belden having more continuity in the feeling of the character and series when it's one author the whole way through.
I think as trixie’s friend group grows and some of her childish behavior diminishes you would like the later books more too, just as with Nancy. I like the first 6-8 books in each series and then something shifts. I asked my grandma and mom how accurate the parents’ absence and the kids’ lack of communication & allowances to roam free were for the time period and they both said it was normal! 😳 very accurate. Watching you and Stephanie laugh about them was fun!
It is totally accurate Deea. Plus the world wasn't quite as bad as it is now....or we didn't hear as much about it in 70s in the country. My husband agrees though that he and his brother would be sent to the store on their bikes or walking at 7 or 8yrs old. They were cutting grass at 8 because a neighbor paid them. And he was in a decent sized town in the late 50s
@@Thecatladybooknook_PennyD the cynical part of me wonders how many children went missing in those days and the news cycle didn’t work the same way, so people just didn’t hear about it 😬 Although people were also more neighborly and looked out for each other more back then as well.
But reading Nancy as a 9yr old.... is different than reading as an adult and a 9yr old won't think as deeply as you are re: Nancy as the first installment character. I'm glad you had fun. I'm still going to keep my nostalgia and not reread these.
Oh, definitely! I know I am much more critical as an adult than as a child 😂 I don’t blame you for not wanting to ruin your nostalgia! It didn’t ruin mine, but I can see where you’d be nervous about that.
Loved reading with you this weekend! ❤️
Thanks for joining in the page count challenge! It was so fun!
I loved this so much! It has been so much fun comparing the two!
Thank you so much for reading them with me! That made it twice as fun!

I haven't read any Judy Bolton books! I'll have to put that on my list.

That’s good to know! I plan to read at least the next Trixie book. If nothing else, I will laugh a lot at it 😂
