- Welcome to my split pea and potato dal recipe. The perfect and healthy batch-cook recipe now those cold winter evenings are approaching. I store the dal in takeaway containers and pop enough into the fridge for 3-4 day and simply put the remainder into the freezer and either put it into the microwave for 5 minutes to heat up or take one out of the freezer the night before I want it and either heat it up in a sauce pan or a couple of minutes in the microwave.
Some of these recipes take some time to prepare so batch cooking is the way forward if you want to save time, always have some great food to hand at a moment’s notice, and want to start eating healthier. ENJOY!
INGREDIENTS - Serves 12-15
Yellow Split Peas 1kg - soaked overnight with a tsp of bicarbonate of soda which helps speed up water absorption which reduces cooking time.

Thank you wonderful BIR Chef Steven Heap!
Very nice dal Steve. One of my favourites. But nice with a twist like the dish you cooked. Definitely try that one mate 👍
Thanks Neil👍
Nice one Steve plenty to go round there, bet it was really tasty and obviously super healthy.
Yes, I'll be eating this twice a day until it's finished. Batch cooking really has to be tasty or I'd get board eating it all.
@@StevenHeapRecipesThanks wonderful BIR Chef Steven Heap! BIR Chef Allun Sperring cuts up the dried whole chillies with scissors. I will buy a high quality pressure cooker one day!
Very nice dish. I live alone and have a small 1.5 litre pressure cooker I got in India. Indispensible once you get the hang of it.
Yes, you are right
Bir Chef Steven Heap, your BIR mix powder is the best!!!
Al's is not far behind, followed by Dan Toombs, Richard Sayce and Julian Voigt
Wow they've all brought one out 😆
When you say yellow split , are you referring Toor dhal or something else? I live in India.
Hello, no, not toor dal, these are yellow matar. Very popular here in the UK
3:35 a shitey spoon?
😆 🤣 😂
Steven why did you use the water the lentils were soaking in? Maybe I’m missing something but I thought the purpose was to clean and hydrate.
Hi, I know what you mean. Here I wanted to wash away the bicarbonate of soda but yes, I agree that washing first is better (adding the bicarbonate to the dish - which is fine). Busy week 😀
