- Are you stockpiling Canned Meat including Canned Chicken as a survival food for your preparedness journey and your family's security during and after a post SHTF world?
Two prepping "Superpowers" are Costco and Sam's Club. Both have canned chichen, but, which is the best value?

Sams did not have broth. Sam's had brine. The salt/sodium content is 100 grams higher for Sam's than Costco. This means that Sam's may last longer on the shelf, but will be more detrimental to your health if you are on a low sodium diet. You should drain and rinse the Sam's salt water chicken, the Costco chicken you can actually use the broth. If you're making chicken soup, Costco is the best. If you're making chicken salad sandwiches, Sams might be better after you rinse & drain the brine off.
Love those canned chicken , it’s good right out of the can with cold mayonnaise, and some spice for making chicken salad sandwiches
Hello kuzinit,
Yep they are pretty right out the can and can be used in so many ways. Your sandwich sounds great!
Two cans of chicken 1 cup of cold Mayo add tablespoon of dill weed- teasopn celery seed
-and half teaspon celery salt or regular salt a little bit of pepper, stir well and put in fridge to chill, you can add to it like maybe a little bit of dried onion or garlic
In a skillet with a little cornstarch for gravy. Great meal with rice or potatoes
FYI, modified food starch is a sneaky way to say MSG. And if you Google about “natural flavor” you’ll find that it’s not actually all that natural. 🤢
Modified food starch has nothing to do with MSG. It is used to thicken or emulsify foods. Likely used in this case to add more body to the chicken. Natural flavor on the other hand is only “slightly “ natural so you’re correct there
Hello TCgirl,
MSG gets sneaked into many foods these days by calling it umpteen different things!
@@ChefPrepper right, and I am not saying in a survival situation that I wouldn't consume it if that is all there is obviously, but if I am prepping in advance, it's good to know in case someone might need to avoid MSG or the like, in favor of something else they might be able to find that doesn't contain it. Thank you for being open to hearing this without jumping to judgement as others on here have. I appreciate it. I also appreciate your channel! 🙂
@@ChefPrepper I do still buy the canned chicken even if it has the modified food starch in it, for prepping, at least until I can find a better and cost effective alternative. Thanks again for your channel!
Natural flavors is aborted kidney cells. It's in everything. It enhances the flavors.
Found your site just a few weeks ago. A lot of great info ! As for me, I’ll stay with Sam’s Club. Cheapest is not always the best. Please keep up the good work !
Hello williamtinlin,
Thank you for your kind words. I am glad you found our channel and that is useful for you!
And you are right, cheapest is not always the best!
I prep mostly with white rice and dry lentils. I have about 1000 pounds of rice, and 1000 pounds of lentils. I use about 2 pounds of lentils a day to cook for my family (we LOVE lentils) so the stock gets rotated out every 500 days or so. When the rice gets about 5 years old, I buy 1000 new pounds of it, and donate my stock to the food pantry;)
Hello peter5.056,
You have a very good plan in place! And we, to, like lentils and have a few in our storage foods.
This was a great comparison, with the Chef Prepper Labs exposing the differences in labeling.
You confirmed something I've noticed with other canned meats, in that the Costco meats have always appeared to have more meat packed in a little less liquid. But I'm speaking from casual observation as opposed to your hard data/facts.
While I have tons of freeze-dried meats, veges, fruits, dairy, etc. for my long-term preps, I also store a lot of canned goods for every day use and short to mid-term preps. I've never used anything from Sam's Club simply because I don't have one close by (60 miles), but I do have two Costcos within about 30 miles in the Olympia, WA area.
I love canned meats for simple recipes or to enhance side dishes that I can easily make into meals, so I really appreciate what you brought to the table (no pun intended) with this one.
As always, thanks for what you do. 🙂
Hello Steve,
I was surprised by the can contents vs the labels!
Not having a Sam's Club nearby makes the choice easier!
Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@ChefPrepper Hey Les,
I was surprised at what you turned up as well. Your results show we really need to pay attention to labeling and compare when possible.
As I stated earlier, I thought I had noticed a difference in the meat to liquid ratio between like products of different brands but didn't think much of it. Something the Chef Prepper labs totally confirmed. What gets me is that I always assumed that "net contents" meant the product (meat) itself, and not the liquid it's packed in as well.
Live and learn, eh? 😉
You should do a taste test. Also, don't ask what tastes better. I would go with the Sam's chicken since it has the Least ingredients
Hands Down Sam’s for me :) cleaner ingredients!
Can't argue with that!
Probably not survival food, but we use the canned chicken from Costco to make green chile enchiladas. Layer thusly: tortilla, shredded chicken, Young Guns Hot Green Chile, shredded sharp cheddar. Repeat two or three times depending on hunger level. Microwave for 3-4 minutes on high. Dress up with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and dice onions. Beans on the side if your wish, or a quick Spanish rice. Start to eating time is about 20 minutes.
Hello robedmund,
Your recipe sounds delicious! The microwave might not be useful in a true grid-down situation, but, we are not there yet.
In such times, make your own flat bread with flour and water as a tortilla substitute, a little powdered cheese and use a camping type of oven and you can still have your enchiladas!
Thank you for watching and sharing this recipe.
Les just found your channel --I am no prepper--but I find what you do is helpful and interesting --looking at your older stuff--I subscribed and thank you for your hard work
Hello, ronsoaper,
You are welcome! And thank you for watching and subscribing!
I am glad you find our channel helpful.
I use the chicken broth from the cans to cook with for added flavor to my meals and use less water.
I would rather have it from Sam's due to the modified food starch in the 😮 Costco brand
I'm stocked up on Sam's and occasionally use it in Tuna Helper or a creamy pasta, doctored up. Yum!
I do the 4 packs of can chicken from Walmart, $10. Great Value also just started doing the big cans of Turkey. Stacking that now.
Hello goodcitizen,
Good idea. I get those 4 packs from time to time too.
Thank you for watching!
Sam's is the winner for me; Chicken Water and Salt ,Cant beat that.
Sams is the winner for ingredients 👍🏽
Hello roguegypsy,
Yeah, it has less "stuff" in it! Thank you for watching and commenting!
Hi Chef - I did a little experiment between Costco, Sam's and Walmart Brand for canned chicken. Costco was the taste and texture winner. Thanks for reviewing these products and keep the preparation coming. Love PegEgg
Here in Scotland we don’t have Sam’s so Costco it is!
Hello anniegetyrgun,
Makes the choice easy!
Thanks for watching!
I feel like going into a Wal-Mart grabbing a scale and then going over and weighing in cans and see if which one's the heaviest ones and then take those LOL
One huge detail you failed to notice was the serving size comparison; Sam's was a 3 oz. (84 gm) size, and Costco was a 2 oz (56 gm) size. That skews the results heavily. Secondly, the Sam's chicken was on sale, and reduced from $14.98. Thirdly, Sam's had more liquid in the can, and less meat.
Compare apples to apples!
I was wondering about the differences. Looks like I can continue to buy from both! Thanks for sharing.
You are welcoe and glad it was helpful!
1st time seeing your channel. Very interesting. Subscribed.
I am not near either one but do have Walmart which is higher. I have a Costco membership and they will ship free on grocery orders of $75.
I believe the packers have cut back on meat content and are adding more water. Every thing is downsizing lately. Orange juice has gone from 64 oz to 59 oz and now 52 oz.
Thanks for watching and subbing!
Lots of downsizing going on except the prices!
I save/freeze the broth to add in soups
1st video I watched from this channel. I was curious about how the Costco chicken compared since I am storing that. Good tests 😊 I Like to know country of origin when comparing foods … not just “processed in”
Hello rlrl,
Thank you for watching! I will try to include country of origin in some of the upcoming videos as I know this is important to a lot of folks.
Better ingredients, more nutrition and more content in the Sams. To me that's a win.😊
I personally would pick sams for the cleaner ingredients.
Very informative analysis of the two products, I have a discount store in my area (So Cal) that has the Kirkland brand same can same ounces @ $1.69.
Hello bigdogbob,
Thank you Bigdogbob,!
That's a pretty good price! I would get a few of those.
What are the Shelf Lifes of each Can? Also in a SHTF I dont think anyone would be wasting that broth so the calories from that would put Sams ahead for me personally
Hello Scotty86doo,
Shelf life is variable. Most canned meats have a Best By date of 2-4 years after going on the shelf at the grocery store.
In reality most canned meat and most canned foods have a shelf life that goes far beyond the Best By date.
I have a couple of videos that have links to information about the shelf life of canned foods that you might check out.
If you have trouble finding them, let me know and thank you for watching.
I’m Costco Everything! Love Em
Sam's is Walmart... I will pick Costco regardless. Plus buying Kirkland's batteries(Duracell) by the brick after the 7 pr 8 dollar instant rebate is like 13 bucks for 48 batteries
Hello kychaney,
Thank you for watching and for the info. I will definitely check out the batteries.
Canned corned beef for the win every time.
Sam's is the winner better ingredients? Maybe has less chicken, but it's healthier.
THANKS, Great video
Hello bobjeffrey,
You are welcome! And thank you for watching!
Just found your channel. This is a great video. I like how you evaluated and compared. Sam's seemed like a big winner but comparing a different way they are almost the same.
Hello Jasond,
Thank you ! And welcome to our channel. They are pretty close in my opinion to.
I always buy Costco brand, only because I have never had a membership nor been in a Sams Club store. We do however like the Costco brand and see the value now of our choice. Definitely am stocking up on all I can with my budget. I like your comparisons though!
Hello donnaheller,
I am glad you found the video helpful and thank you for watching!
If either one puts it on sale, that will be the winner, but otherwise Costco is where I’ll get the chicken if I’m in Costco Sams is where I’ll get the chicken if I’m in Sams because they are so close
Hello kathyfan,
Can't argue with that! Thank you for watching!
Did a very similar comparison of sams chicken to walmarts. Sams came out way ahead but good to see theres competition
Hello titanpreparedness,
I will have to check out that video!
Thank you for watching!
I like the clover valley canned chicken from dollar general. The price is right and its good quality. In fact dollar general is about the best I have seen for canned goods
Hello nekbiodieselworks,
I like the Clover Valley canned goods too. They are decently priced and seem to be as good a quality as other brands of canned food.
I have lots of Costco canned chicken .. I also have canned chicken from Walmart
I'm wondering if there is a difference in expiration dates as well. If one lasts longer than the other, that might be the better deal.
Make spaghetti or chili with generic tomato soup. Make beef stew with a V,-8 n all fixins. Instead of hamburger in spaghetti or chili use cut up hotdogs.
Hello stevehartman,
Good ideas sir, and thank you for watching and sharing your recipe ideas!
Sam's wins for me, less ingredients. Besides, there is no Costco here.
Good video Chef, Thanks. I'm putting back both.
Hello vegasprepping,
Thank you!
I get a little of both too.
Only a true mouth breather would think any Walmart product could compare to Costco
Sam’s because it is clear we. That’s important to me.
I use Sam’s. Really good.
I don't belong to Sam's or Costco so I get Keystone chicken water and seasalt
Hello crisservin,
Good choice, we get some of the Keystone meats also and they are "clean", less stuff added into their meats.
HELLO GTSY I CAN MY OWN CHICKEN AND IT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL AND THE BROTH IS GOOD
I will stick to the product without the added chemicals.
I have used both brands, and without actually weighing them I find I get more chicken from the Sam's Club variety, so I was surprised to see Costco weighed more? I imagine each can will vary. Also, the Sam's Club serving sizes appear to count the water, while Costco does not?
Your video showed up randomly while I just finished canning 14 quarts of chicken breast. If you think your phone not listening to you, while you make random conversations your crazy people!
Great video! Thank You!
Hello victoriagarcia,
You are welcome! And thank you for watching!
Thank you for your video.
I'm so happy that I can still "afford" to be fussy.
Not that it matters. There is neither a Sam's or a Costco here where I'm at in the Great White North.
There's one Costco in the next Province over but they are a bunch of hard asses and won't even allow a fellow a "test drive" in their store to see if you want to pay the membership for the long haul.
I was lucky enough to find someone with a membership and got my order shipped right to my door. Just some bulk Beans and they were out of stock with half the Beans I wanted so I doubled up on what they did have.
I have 13 meat chicks and two bags of feed left so when one bag of feed is finished, I plan on harvesting the largest birds in the flock and using the last bag of feed for growing out the smaller birds.
The eggs I hatch to replenish my small flock of Layers always produces roosters and I pressure can those tough birds up boneless in a quart jar. I don't debone the legs, I just chop the knob off them to make room in the jar and to expose the bone marrow to the canning process. Yum, yum.
Then I simmer the carcasses with Onions, Carrots, and Celery, for about three days for the broth.
I haven't been canning the meats that I use to can because of the rising prices so I've been buying a lot of store bought canned meats for the storage pantry in the past year or so. Mostly canned Ham, Beef, and Fish because I do my own chickens.
Now I'm not one for buying processed Cereals but my dear old Mum likes them for breakfast so I have to stock up on those things before they become "unobtanium", or too expensive to buy.
There are great big bags of No Name "Oaty O's" for $5 a bag at the local grocery so I'm going to buy at least four of the suckers and pack them away in Mylar with Oxygen Absorbers.
Meanwhile, I'll just keep the rotating pantry going as well.
Honeycomb is her other favorite cereal and I have a hard time finding that on sale, but when I do, .... We have a Toast and Cereal rotation going for Mums breakfast with the odd bowl of cooked Oatmeal to change things up.
As for the canned chicken, get it while the getting is good. Get it before the old saying of, "Beggars Can't Be Choosers" kicks in eh?
Just call me a choosy beggar for the moment anyway.
Keep up the great work and good luck.
Hello daval,
You are welcome and thank you for watching!
Hello again daval,
You should consider starting a RUclips channel! You have a lot of good ideas, information and know-how!
@@ChefPrepper Thank you for the compliment but it's not for me, ... I'm too "mental".
You see, the minute I associate making money doing something, I lose all interest in doing something. Sad but true.
Call it my own "vow of poverty" but I only use money given to me freely and unconditionally, ... and that would be social security and the old age pension, all $132 of the pension every month. Thank god because that entitles me to welfare and what would I do without welfare? AKA, Social Security?
I call this place the Gulag of Poverty and one must be resourceful here in the great gateless, guardless, prison of despair called the Gulag of Poverty.
This Gulag creates the incentive in losers such as myself that would drive us to agree to flip those "for profit" burgers, "serve" those for profit tables, and clean those "for profit" toilets, all for a part time, minimum wage, no benefits, position of subservience, ... and I'm sorry, but I was never good at saying, Yessum Massa".
See? Mental. I have my "papers" stating it so too. Besides all this written drivel.
So I work on the Ways of the Win/Win and the Economics of Time for the future child. It's the least I can do and were I to be distracted by "work" and that eternal quest for "money", I wouldn't get much done now would I?
I'm happy planting my seeds of Win/Win in the dismal and depleted soil of the win/lose with the knowledge that failed human filth makes the best fertilizer.
Just don't be the best fertilizer.
The Economics of Time are a community owned "not for profit" worth and value of our time and energy based in time alone, backed by the abundance of the world, and built on a foundation of truth and reality.
No more lies and corruption of "eternal growth and profit" here where nothing grows forever and "profit" is a concept not to be found in nature.
We lived in a world of abundance, not profit.
Plant a grain of Wheat and get 14 grains back, that's not profit, that's abundance and "profit" was the method used to concentrate that abundance of the world into the hands and control of the few, the elite, the entitled, and those great winners in a perverted world of childish win/lose.
The abundance of our time and energy serves others and we currently allow it. Might be too late for the vast majority too.
Seems we have traded our lives for a privately owned "for profit" road of convenience that has taken us so far from all that is natural and organic, such as the ability to feed, clothe, and shelter ourselves, that when this proved unsustainable road of "eternal growth and profit" collapses, we're going to die by the billions.
Too harsh?
Maybe.
Twist your head around this for shits and giggles.
In reality the time and energy "spent" in production renders the product paid for. Imagine a free world for free children.
In reality, everything we need for our lives and convenience can be calculated in the human time required for production and exchanged for equal amounts of all that "time" produces.
I know, that just stinks of true equality and would only be declared "too Commie" by the afflicted.
No profit in it they say because they are blind I say.
Imagine "how" the abundance of the world transformed into the worth and value of our time and energy would compound annually until the future child was born rich instead of being born an ignorant slave to the lies and corruption called "eternal growth and profit", because Mommy and Daddy were/are.
Oops! My "real" crazy is showing!
With the Ways of the Win/Win only people with the proven ability to practice and achieve the Win/Win advance to the highest tables of power where the action and direction taken by the people "serve" to benefit everyone equally and not just benefit the few, the elite, the entitled, and the great winners of the world as we do today.
Remember, they crucified Christ and almost burned Galileo alive because they dared to question the Status Quo.
Now I ain't that mental to believe that I'm anywhere near those guys but I am crazy enough to question the Status Quo.
Shamed too, that it takes one such as myself to do so.
Where's all the smart and qualified people?
Oh yeah, bought off by the system and rewarded well for their compliance. They have too much to lose whereas all I have to lose is my life and that's taken anyway. Nature will see to that eh?
OK, I'm ranting again. I pray I've entertained if nothing else, ...
Keep up the great work and good luck.
Sams wins for me because of the ingredients listing. I’ll pay more for less. :)
add some bbq sauce and your favorite bun and it makes a damn good bbq chicken sandwich , quick and easy
I just found your channel. It's awesome. ❤
Hello rosesandcorn,
Thank you! I am glad you find our channel useful!
In a SHTF scenario, the fat content, and better quality of Sam`s wins out over Costco. Costco`s stuff is nasty and cheap regardless of your tests, but to each his own.
Thanks for sharing
Hello pauletterichards,
You are welcome! And thank you for watching!
Costco is the better deal and I think the taste is much better.
Prefer sams club for taste I will go with sams
informative video. Thanks!
Hello brlundgr,
You are welcome! I am glad you found the video useful. Thank you for watching!
Either way, use the broth!
honestly for me neither are winners as we cant do a sams or costco, more like walmart or kroger or meijer brands is what we can get
At those prices, canning chicken in Mason jars is mighty competitive and you know what you are getting.
Hello bradherniem,
Yep, for those folks that are willing to put in the time and effort, canning your own is very good idea!
Sam's Club for me, no msg, modified (genetically engineered) foodstuffs!
the problem is each can is slightly dif even being the same brand
Pure numbers; Cosco. Contents: Sams.
I thought the calories would be the winner in the end. After all don’t you look at calories per day? I have some Sams Club Chicken but prefer Keystone meats over all others.
Hello, lusnorthernhome,
Usually it is for us, but the labels can sometimes be misleading. The actual meat content of these two was much closer than the calorie content on the label, with Costco actually having slightly more weight than Sam's (according to my unscientific test).
Thank you for watching.
Costco! All day
The winner in this comparison is the person that has either in their pantry.😂
I❤️Costco
This is my first video on your site. I will only buy Sam's chicken. The chicken with broth makes me ill. I've had to donate my other brands of canned chicken due to this. Always try out the food you are storing.
Hello negrammy,
Sorry to hear about your experience with some of those canned chicken sources. It is a good idea to try a canned food before stocking up on it!
Thank you for watching and hope you stick around on our channel!
Since I live in the very heart of Sam's Club territory here in NW Arkansas (main headquarters just 15 miles from me), there's not a Costco anywhere. In fact, Costco announced about 2 or 3 weeks ago their plan to build here...yea, that plan lasted about a week before they inexplicably & suddenly pulled out, with no mention of ever returning to NW Arkansas. Yes, the Walton family is royalty here. So, Sam's canned chicken is the choice, by default. However, Keystone (chicken, beef) is my favorite for taste & that is available at Wal-Mart.
Hello wolfdoctor,
Keystone is a good choice, maybe the best for canned chicken overall.
Thanks for watching and don't hold your breath waiting for Costco in NW Arkansas.
Let you in on a little secret of the chicken biz. Canned chicken is from OLD Layer hens.
Well, that’s kind of sad. But it does still taste good and gives you protein that you will definitely need. I guess its a good use for old layer chickens.
Hello 8ema,
I think you are right and we have some old layers that we have to do something with, Hmm, I think we are going to pressure can some of them.
Thank you for watching!
Sams
But what do they taste like?
There are no Sam's Clubs in Canada, anymore, but there is a Costco, if I wanted to drive 1 2/2 hours to get to it.
Jon in rural BC, Canada
Hello JonTanOsb,
That's a long drive! Actually we have to drive about the same, so, our visit is when we make the drive for another reason and then go to one or the other place on that trip.
Probably made in the same factory.
I assume the calorie difference is due to white vs dark meat.
Hello mrallan,
I am not sure what made the difference, both are supposed to be breast meat from the chicken.
None of this matters if there is a significant difference in taste?
Right. Good for folks to find out before they invest very much into one brand or the other.
Is canned chicken actually good? Idk i never had the courage to try it lol
😂 same here
Hello antoniobressi,
I like it, but not as good as freshly made fried or baked chicken, but in times when the fresh stuff isn't readily available, the canned chicken will come in very handy.
Try a can or two and see how you like it.
Thank you for watching!
In things like soups or chilis with a lot of other ingredients, most people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. Definitely avoid the whole chicken in a can if you’ve seen those though 🤮
Sam's. Healthier ingredients.
I have found the Sams brand is very salty
Seems Sams crushed Costco. The sams chicken had a better color too IMO
Hello SupaStah,
I am glad you found a clear winner for your preps! The color I think had something to do with the additional "stuff" in the Costco chicken.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
Sam's Club taste better, n not as salty as Kirkland's brand, Sam's club even looks better n isn't as mushy, so for me I prefer Sam's Club Brand
Hell rosekennedy,
Can't argue with that!
Thank you for watching and sharing with our channel community.
Sam its cleaner
Can’t trust labels, need to actually test content of each can. It’s both white meat chicken. Sams can’t be that much higher protein content
Hello ottoskorzeny,
My thoughts exactly!
The winner is the store that is either available to you or closest to you. In WV, there are no Costco Stores, therefore, Sam's Club is the winner.
Hello bobd,
Sounds like choosing between the two in your area is an easy decision. Thank you for watching and commenting!
With the people who has kidney disease? We cannot have that MSG in it. So Sam’s would be the one. It’s a cleaner meat. Yep we cannot have that sulfate in it. No it has to be clean. And with me having a kidney failure, the meat has to be very clean no sulfates in it to those names that they try to sneak in their meat has been very lean and very clean. Sam’s would be the one. I’m glad you showed me the test that way I’m gonna go and get me some of that meat.
Hello robhollon,
Yeah, some folks have to be very careful with their food choices. Two of our family have Celiac disease and two others are allergic to red meat due to tick bites.
I am glad you found the video helpful!
In a shtf you would want the calories
Kirkland has less sodium
Hello snowbunny,
I did not notice that, but it is important for many people. Thank you for watching and the info.
Be careful of their double talk in ingredients. Even things like "natural flavors" are processed.
Hello DesignbyDonBrown,
Right you are DesignbyDonBrown! Natural Flavors can be nearly anything and is usually a form of MSG.
None with be a winner if chicken are being fed GMO feed!
I suffer from Alpha Gal Syndrome, so SAM"S wins for me.
Sam’s is far better for this type of product, I ate both.
Hello BibleExposition,
I also like them both and get a little of each one for my storage food.
Yuk
Believe it or not they're made all by the same company just different label slapped on it it's like that with all products even your cereals are the same it's all about the company is making the money
Yes this is the case many times! Thank you for watching.
Yeah, but my yearly dues are only $45 vs $60! And COSTCO's raw meats are way higher in cost per lb. than Sam's by a long shot!
