I hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2006 from end to end. Did it in 6 months. Was one of the most difficult things I've done, physically and mentally. I was 33, with lightweight gear, a cell phone, lots of hikers on the trail, and easy access to food supplies. I am in complete awe of Grandma Gatewood. True inspiration.
I need to watch this so bad. I've grown up with many stories of her. Grandma Gatewood is my great great grandmother. My grandfather is her first grandchild. Our whole family loves to tell her stories. We all admire her very deeply she was truly a remarkable woman.
We love hearing from family. You can buy a DVD from Bette Lou Higgins at edenvalleyenterprises.org or watch it on vimeo.com pay per view at vimeo.com/ondemand/237744?gclid=Cj0KCQjwjvaYBhDlARIsAO8PkE0R6rVk3aVRV3jwoLHOmoCjcnHA6w0OW1nuA8ct_qqasCyzInCrOmsaAtAJEALw_wcB
I am from Ohio, a "self proclaimed outdoorsman," until I heard about grandma. I am a black man, and only say so because it just shows we are different, but the same. I wish I had and am sorry that I didn't meet this woman....She has my respect and would have had my ear 24/7....God I wish i would have known her...maybe down the trail...
Thank you Ryver. Can you sign up for our mailing list so we can keep him posted on our progress? (here's a link to our sign up form: www.edenvalleyenterprises.org/contactgoogle.htm )
Beautiful thought Ryver. If you’re a believer may I share my favorite yt ministry showing bible prophecy fulfilling in current “news “ events is Midday Power Surge/ Prophecy Again. Posts most days. Vital information.
Currently reading "Grandma Gatewoods walk" and cant put it down. If there was anything that could ground her it was the beauty and peace of nature. A very remarkable lady.
Her story needs to be either a Major Motion Picture or Streaming Video. Wow one of the greatest stories I've ever read and I'm not outdoorsy. I'm completely intrigued and amazed.
Almost done with the book - the Grandma Gatewood's Walk. I had heard about her a few years ago at a sunset talk in Shenadoah Park and then a friend actually bought me the book for my birthday. I can't believe she hiked this trail at her age - this is just amazing to me. I hope some day to hike it - but with much more creature comforts. I'm clearly not tough like she was!!
Thank you for sharing. She is an inspiring person. Find us on facebook.com/grandmagatewood for a ongoing discussion. You can also buy the documentary DVD at edenvalleyenterprises.org
Just completed the book. So well written. Thank you Ben Montgomery. I stepped onto the AT for the first time at age 55. We did a section hike from Fontana Dam to the NOC. It was tough. Two years later we hiked the Cumberland Gap Ridge Trail in Tennessee. Two years the Little Manistee River Trail in Michigan. Always loved it. Always tough for me. I take my place along side the thousands who stand in awe of Emma Gatewood....
Thanks for getting in touch. Ben did a nice job of capturing the inner thoughts of Emma. If you want to see the EMMY nominated film please go to edenvalleyenterprises.org/progdesc/gatewood/tmfilminf/tmdvd.htm to order or set up a group viewing.
A funny story about her. While she was actually hiking the trail she actually saw her son on the trail and he had no idea it was her because it wasn't even a thought in his mind for her to be walking the trail at her age. Sorry thought I'd share a story passed down from the family. She's my great great grandmother.
My inspiration to thru hike the Appalacian Trail and to continue hiking well into my later golden years :-) God bless her legacy. I can't wait for the documentary! Thank you for putting her story to film :-)
Grandma gatewood it's an inspiration to all of us... As a through hiker in 2018 going southbound I had the honor is staying on a farm in New Hampshire where she stayed I meant the the man who was just a boy that met Grandma gatewood and now she came off I believe it was called cube mountain and knocked on his door and said my name is Grandma gatewood and what's for dinner so The story goes....
Hi Hanuman, You are right about Emma "Grandma"Gatewood. In the 1950's hospitality was part of the trail experience. Emma would have felt quite comfortable asking for a place to sleep or something to eat. So different from the 2020'S
very cool. . . .I hike the area of Buckeye trail named in her honor. . . .this is from Old Man's cave to Ash cave. . . . .certainly one of Ohio's great people in history. . . . . .Willy
am about to read the book, and would love to see the film about this remarkable woman. it does seem odd that the background music is the English hymn, I vow to thee our country..which is lovely, but about England.
@MsAvrillavigne101 We are excited to be telling this story. Share this with friends as we continue on. You might also check out our website grandmagatewood(dot)com
LoNSlo2015AT We are actively looking for places to present the film. You can set up a screening for a group, festival or local theater. Later next spring we will be heading towards PBS affiliates too. Let us know how we can help.

I am inspired by her. She was a survivor of domestic violence and did not let anything keep her down.
