My Mississippian grandmother made something like these, but she called them apple dumplings.. very popular in the time of the great depression of America . One of the recipes she actually hand wrote for me on a plain white sheet of paper and mailed to me .. as well as her blackberry cobbler and chicken and dumplings recipe and of course her plain piecrust recipe..❤ I have treasured for many years…

As a lifelong fan of apple strudel and my mom's baked apple dumplings. Only she used regular pastry and the filling was Red Hots cinnamon candy. She just cored the apples though and filled the centers. Didn't hollow them out though and cook a filling. That is one thing I must try for myself. I didn't make homemade mincemeat this year, but I must now. I love mince pies. It looks absolutely fabulous. Eating those baked apples in pie crust was one of my favorite winter treats. I might toss in a few cinnamon candies to one of mine to see what that tastes like a long with your filling. Definitely some pecans.

Over here in the Mid-Atlantic U.S. we called these baked apples and my mother served them with a lovely rum sauce. Thanks for the memory! We didn't core out quite that much apple though, we only cored out the very center and packed it with raisins, butter sugar and spices. Mincemeat isn't that popular over here.

This would be a great cooking project for the kids. Mom or Dad could core out the apples, after the kids have destroyed a couple (that's half the fun). The parent could guide the way thru the rest of the build. I think this is something they would really get excited about, and anticipating the tasting at the end.

This is like an apple dumpling. Th whole apple is cored. The core stuffed with sugar spices and raisins/sultanas. The apple is then wrapped in short pastry and baked. Some people pour a sugar syrup over it while baking. But I found an 18th century recipe for it where the apple is placed in a pudding cloth or bag and boiled.
