  • Watch my video on how to build a 9V electric fence to keep slugs out of raised garden beds.
    • Electric barrier for s...
This video shows my first attempt but more importantly it shows a slug trying to unsuccessfully cross the fence.

you want the wires to be on a vertical surface so the slugs can drop down instead of interrupting the electricity

You stopped the video just as the slug looked like it was about to cross the wires sideways rather then head on. I appreciated the increased sense of immediacy you created with the use of a handheld camera though.

It looked to me as if at the end the slug was getting bolder - it might change behaviour if it gets used to the current. I think it would be a better test to create a two loop electric pen and put slug in centre and see if it escapes - if it stays in centre for ages ( perhaps left unattended ) you know the effectiveness does not die down with time. See other RUclips video to get the idea of an "electric pen" search for "Copper Tape Slug Repellent Test" on RUclips - guy basically used copper tape to make an enclosure. I am suggesting two concentric copper wire circles - not touching and then connect to battery.

Okay. All I can say is that my slug problem went away!

Love it. Yes animals were harmed in the making of this movie. Thank you for a new way to deal with slugs. I know I'm tired of my lettuce starts being decimated.

I think the world will survive with a couple less slugs?

You sound like me. I'm out daybreak hunting those suckers . On coast of WA state. They destroyed my spinach and beans. I had to raise up beds on legs and coat with salt every couple days. They are eating my potato plants now. I have no sympathy for them at this point. Shock therapy is next years plan.😂😂

You can always add the batteries in series, parallel, or both if you want more power to deter them. ;) P.S. Series connection gives you more voltage, whereas parallel gives you more amps, and series, parallel gives you beast mode!

The other night in the garden I noticed slugs being repelled from the copper tape I'd stuck around my plant pots.

Someone that sells these devices recommends steel wire and says that copper will corrode quickly.

Perhaps if the wires were farther apart the slug would be more extended and get more body shock??

the end it works? The snail was fully on both wires, what happened next? xD

How long does the battery last

It seemed to work for the season. I didn't do a volt reading unfortunately!

Battery life tends to deplete over a period of time; however, since it's an open circuit (until the slugs come in contact with the wires), there's practically no active power loss, Meaning it could last up to 10 years!

Not as long as it should do, if left outdoors without a cover to protect it from the elements.

🤣🤣 cool, but will it shock you if you touched both wires?

No, it's a 9V battery with extremely low current. Your skin absorbs the electromagnetic energy without you even noticing.
