This shocked me when I watched The Bodyguard for the first time. We spend so much time with Kevin Costner's character being boring and mediocre and the movie treats him like he's an actor with charisma.
Kevin Costner's ego is unbelievable. In The Postman (1997) directed by and starring Kevin Costner, there is literally a scene where he shows up to a town of post-apocalyptic refugees and one of the guys there inexplicably begs Kevin Costner to impregnate his wife (followed by a sex scene). You just reminded me of Dances with Wolves so I had to look up whether Costner had anything to do with the writing of that film? My instinct was correct! He directed and starred but didn’t write it because it was based on an existing book. That tells me everything I need to know about this multi part epic devised by Costner at the height of his ego being bruised while making Yellowstone. Ill give him credit like Francis Ford Coppola, both are at least putting up their own money to make these long gestating dream projects that no one seems to like? Lol
The absolute ego required to get the financing to make 2 3-hour western epics and then be like no, that's just the first HALF of it absolutely boggles the mind

When I heard about this project, I was wondering if, perhaps, Kevin Costner has matured a bit and might have something interesting to show us. I appreciate you subjecting yourself to this disappointment for me.
Thinking about cases where people say "you can't judge it too harshly, it's only chapter 1", I'm trying to think if there's ever been a case where the 2nd installment has made the crap 1st installment worth it? It seems to me that storytellers only make you wait for substance if there isn't any. Like someone telling a bailiff "I don't have the money, but I will tomorrow!" They'll never have the money!

he fell into the common trope of any terrible multi part "epic": making Part 1 a boring Act 1-set up/character slog fest with little of the actual momentum or progression. A Part 1 like should be it's own story with beginning, middle, and end that leaves you wanting to see where the characters go further and how the world might develop (weird saying that about America lol) but instead it was a collection of scenes that felt like filler scenes in a western, which is the worst kind of filler. I can't even imagine trying to come up with a structure for a screenplay with a subject as broad as this so I totally understand why it's so aimless; what do you even do with this premise like "4- Part Frontier America Epic" that doesn't simply turn into a conventional western? That being said i would not call it a bad movie more of a movie that fell on its own ambitions then again it really was just three first acts so i will watch the sequels but im not that excited about them ,
Don't listen to Jake. It's a fun old-fashioned three-hour western movie. You get your money's worth and then some. People need to just let down their "I'm too cool for school" guard and they can enjoy themselves a lot more Just sayin
I am a huge Kevin Costner fan and I just came back from seeing this film and thought it was horrible. My husband and I couldn't wait for the end. It was just really bad. Also, I thought it was bizarre that he used his sons name for his character.
I realize this portion of the review was just shooting the shit (and that I am also 2 months late), but to say that this movie lacked writing, characters, or plot seemed, to me, to be a disingenuous critique. I'd argue that even if you threw in the necessary "in my opinion, these things are bad" line, it doesn't really do this film justice. The plot is in chapter 1, I felt, was akin to giving the viewer multiple threads to follow as they begin their road to joining one another. I'd say the use of music was a bit cheesy, the acting was poor at times, and apparently some of the weapons weren't accurate for the timeline, but ultimately these things also existed for reasons that brought me to like this film: The music exists in an attempt to create a timeless "for all ages" feel (not my favorite, doesn't mesh well with a lot of the film clearly not being for all ages, but I still respect the attempt). The poor acting in some scenes I chalked up to kevin cosner using ill-experienced actors over other, bigger names. A lot of these characters are being played by no-names, and while there are always better talents out there, I felt the sacrifice made in using a cast that wasn't filled to the brim with at mid to top-tier names made up for itself by giving the film a greater sense of immersion, since I'm not being drawn out of each moment by trying to figure out where I recognize certain faces from. As for the weapons thing, I have no excuse for. I will say I read somewhere that the costume design was entirely on-point, which I took at face value, but maybe that's inaccurate. All of this to say that my respect for this film is greater than the film itself is quality, if that makes sense. It's a passion piece that valued its own vision over creating something digestable for the vast majority of audiences or, apparently, film critics who will feel that it somehow lacks writing, characters, or plot. I'd make a few changes to the film myself, probably revolving around editing stuff like overall tone in specific scenes in post, but that's the nature of movies like this: they don't really make changes in production based on what most people want out of them, but what the artist(s) want out of them. I'd give chapter 1 a 7/10. I feel bad for people who care about cinema being led to believe that a film like this isn't worth watching
The movie should be re-structured and re-focused. This film has perspective of a drone hovering above the events and no overarching strong plot point which would join them.
Have you watched Dances with Wolves though? It’s a masterpiece. It didn’t just win best picture it swept the Oscar’s. 7 academy awards and 3 golden globes. Timeless.
Part of me wanted this to be some kind of amazing film. But I'm not really surprised. I've never thought much of Costner as an actor or a director. The man is like the human embodiment of a late Friday afternoon yawn, just before facing some grueling traffic, heading home from a rough week at work. But I do love a good Western, so I was hoping...maybe just a little bit, that this would be a surprise.
You guys should consider checking out The Bikeriders. It made for a decent date movie. It’s nothing too deep but Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy are crazy good in it and there are some interesting choices made. And no one is really talking about it so I want more videos discussing it lol.
Worst movie review I ever saw. Horizon is a layered and incredible movie with a compelling story to tell. The main character is the "the old west" but you don't get it.
I liked it, but Jake is right about a lot of these criticisms. It looks like a cheap TV show, and after 3 hours there’s still hardly any plot at all. Instead of making 4 movies each telling 25% of 4 different stories, he maybe should’ve just made 4 movies each telling 100% of their own story.
People are suprised George Miller is 80 because he doesn't make movies that an 80 year old is expected to make. This movie tho seems exactly what you would expect from an 80 year old guy and no i will not check how old Kevin Costner is
I totally agree with your criticism of this "movie" ---- to be honest this felt like a tv show that got the plug pulled and to save some of the money - they cut together a bunch of scenes and called it a movie..........the end of chapter 1 felt like a montage commercial for an upcoming HBO series ---- I feel sorry for anyone that rented this piece of shit for $19.99 or paid good money to see this in a theater. I really loved Dances with Wolves and OPEN RANGE was a great sleeper film...... Horizon was crap.
I would just point out that you're taking a royal dump on a non-IP, largely independently funded auteur film that's trying to do something even remotely different by having a four-part structure. Why do that? You're convincing people not to go see the exact type of movie we all bitch and moan to see more of. Unnecessary and mean-spirited
If a movie sucks a movie sucks bro. We shouldn't give it brownie points for sucking just because of the circumstances in which it was made. He could have funded a better movie.
There's no accounting for ignorance......I found this movie to be epic. No CGI which you people can't appreciate a movie without. Itx authentic, it's pace is mellow but it's dramatic, traumatic. It's your history of how America came to be, the struggles of your forefathers or don't you get it? This movie is surely setting the scene for the movies to come? I'm invested and looking forward to the following chapter. Perhaps it's one shortcoming is it needs a written introduction on screen for those who need to be spoon-fed as to what the movie is about.
@ZUIKMedia Sorry that you think so. Its easy to critcise someone's hard work from the comfort of an armchair. There are two types of people in this world: the talkers and the doers. I know which ones I favour .
Judging solely from his interviews I feel like Costner wants to make a Western where the white people are the good guys and the Indians are the bad guys but he feels like he has to throw in a scene showing the Indians aren't completely bad guys because then people will get mad at him but it's half hearted.
Democrats and Lefties hate this show. This show is not a traditional movie or story. This is his Magnus Opus with his own money behind it. He understands Westward Expansion and appreciates the old movies as well as anyone. It’s a tribute to all of that. You remind me of the weak artist not understanding the need to work and help the others. I feel badly for your girl. It’s a slow story as intended. Go watch as someone wanting to understand that human struggle and the history. Then comment.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was naively anticipating this. What a stinker.
Don't listen to Jake. It's a fun old-fashioned three-hour western movie. You get your money's worth and then some. People need to just let down their "I'm too cool for school" guard and they can enjoy themselves a lot more
Just sayin
@@ResistanceQuest oh, I saw it opening day. It sucked, dude.
@@ResistanceQuestyou’re absolutely right. People just have the attention span of an ant
I'd say the use of music was a bit cheesy, the acting was poor at times, and apparently some of the weapons weren't accurate for the timeline, but ultimately these things also existed for reasons that brought me to like this film:
The music exists in an attempt to create a timeless "for all ages" feel (not my favorite, doesn't mesh well with a lot of the film clearly not being for all ages, but I still respect the attempt).
This review is perfect, everything you said , I couldn't have said it better myself.
The movie should be re-structured and re-focused. This film has perspective of a drone hovering above the events and no overarching strong plot point which would join them.
You’re not the target. The movie is great. Can’t wait for part two.
Considering how badly this movie has bombed it doesnt have any target audience except you alone apparently.
Go See It! Don't let this rain on your western parade. It's a fun long entertaining movie. Jake, as smart as he is, is mistaken
Needs a couple more stories to make it like a western short cuts
This sounds like Heaven’s Gate but if it was terrible and if they decided to make three more of them.
Man ranting about thing
Ive heard very mixed things about this film. I've heard some people loved it and some people didn't.
Just from the clips it looks like a TV movie.
Man carrying pure hatred.
You guys should consider checking out The Bikeriders. It made for a decent date movie. It’s nothing too deep but Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy are crazy good in it and there are some interesting choices made. And no one is really talking about it so I want more videos discussing it lol.
It’s so Yellowstone coded
Worst movie review I ever saw. Horizon is a layered and incredible movie with a compelling story to tell. The main character is the "the old west" but you don't get it.
Clueless.. starts it off with saying theres no plot.. the plot was in front of him..
Can’t see the forest through the trees on this review.
There may be only three ‘chapters”. Only two are actually dated.
This movie tho seems exactly what you would expect from an 80 year old guy and no i will not check how old Kevin Costner is
This was bad on every single level. It drags, it’s generic, basic, and boring. Every time a new character popped up I was like who are you??
RUclips 101 it’s either the best movie ever or worst movie ever no In between .
Too bad the sex scene was cut in Saudi arabia, I didn't even know it existed
so weird because it’s such a nothing sex scene, it’s like 30 seconds of her mounting him
You didn’t miss anything important
I totally agree with your criticism of this "movie" ---- to be honest this felt like a tv show that got the plug pulled and to save some of the money - they cut together a bunch of scenes and called it a movie..........the end of chapter 1 felt like a montage commercial for an upcoming HBO series ---- I feel sorry for anyone that rented this piece of shit for $19.99 or paid good money to see this in a theater. I really loved Dances with Wolves and OPEN RANGE was a great sleeper film...... Horizon was crap.
Kevin Costner made a sleeping pill. I will highly recommend this.
I think you two should swap chairs!?
I'm sorry, this whole time his names been Jake and not "many carrying"????
Honestly I liked it, surprised by all the bad reviews. Definitely setting up the future films and not a true climax.
Amen
Man carrying gen Z title just dropped. This reviews gives argylle vibes lol. Anyways week 8 saying you guys should chekc out ryusuke hamaguchi:)
Maybe you could watch a different creator owned IP that isn't over 3 hours long and is actually great. I'm sure that they exist.
If a movie sucks a movie sucks bro. We shouldn't give it brownie points for sucking just because of the circumstances in which it was made. He could have funded a better movie.
Oh... I enjoyed it.
Baller
Classic western shit, like those john wayne movies which random shit happens in!
I don’t know why this wasn’t a mini-series? I wanted to like this but its just 3 hours of set up for next one.
it isn’t though
I liked it a lot but I didn't love it
There's no accounting for ignorance......I found this movie to be epic.
Wow, what a super pretentious comment.
@ZUIKMedia Sorry that you think so. Its easy to critcise someone's hard work from the comfort of an armchair. There are two types of people in this world: the talkers and the doers. I know which ones I favour .
@@ZUIKMediaWhy would be pretentious ? The guy is just gave him opinion
I enjoyed the movie
Kevin Costner is overrated, one of the most borign actors ever
Same
Like, that's a, like, long, like, movie. Costner, like, is, like...
The fact that you're saying the movie "just dropped" makes me think you're not exactly the target audience in the first place
Sounds like a fedora with arms wrote this

You just hate classic westerns

Western is dead for decades...
He literally mentioned numerous westerns that were better than this one bro. We all watched the video stop lying.
@@DiegoLombardPaohe clearly doesn’t like them. Dances with Wolves he mentions but never said he watched. Best Western of all time.
