  • The Somali Ministry of Youth and Sports has suspended the chairwoman of the country’s athletics federation after viral footage of an untrained sprinter competing in Chengdu, China, on Tuesday, August 1, circulated online.
Footage released by FISU, who run the World University Games, shows the women’s 100 meter sprint.
Nasra Abukar Ali, who was part of a delegation chosen to run for Somalia at the games, can be seen lining up at the start of the race.
Ali almost immediately falls behind her competitors, disappearing out of the camera’s view. She can be seen completing the race long after her competitors, skipping across the finish line.
The clip quickly gathered attention online, with some calling for the resignation of officials involved in the selection of Ali.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Somali Ministry of Youth and Sports suspended Khadija Aden Dahir, the chair of the Somali Athletics Federation, citing abuse of power.
It also said that “Nasra Abukar Ali is not a runner”.
Ali’s heat was won by Brazilian sprinter Gabriela Silva Mourao with a time of 11.58 seconds. Ali finished some 10 seconds behind.

Minister of Youth and Sports Mohamed Barre Mohamud said his ministry did not know how 20-year-old Nasra Abukar Ali was selected to compete in the women's 100 at the student games in Chengdu on Tuesday.
The ministry separately released a statement directing the Somalia Olympic Committee to suspend national athletics federation chairwoman Khadija Aden Dahir amid allegations that Nasra Abukar was a relative of hers and was given the chance to compete at the games because of that.

this is similar to the shot-put girl running the hurdles a few weeks ago. actually she walked . but the reason was important. even if the athlete finishes last their team still gets a point for having a runner in the race. that extra point helped the team qualify for a major sporting tournament coming up in the future. this may be a similar occurrence of a team needing a point and entering a runner with no chance to win. This is also why you sometimes see a runner that falls during a race get up and finish the race even though he or she may have to limp across the finish line far behind the other runners.

You could have literally taken nearly any one between 15 and 25 in Somalia that likes to run and they would have done better than this... Hurdles takes practice so I can see that. In my grade 8 school year the slowest girl on track day was like 18.5 seconds. The fastest was like 12 or 13 seconds. I'm sure Somalia is similar if not fitter and could found anyone that would have liked the trip and being able to compete.

At this level, you may be able to run faster than most people, but still be considered a slow runner. In Triathlon, many people practice and are able to win amateur races because the level of competition is not very high. During my time in college, I swam competitively, but I was not the fastest in my category. However, there were three swimmers in my category who went on to win Olympic medals.

When I ran track we would sometimes have injuries and have to put one of the team members into an event that they had no experience in so that we did not lose out on team points. For example putting a shot putter into a sprinting event. But since this is Somalia we are talking about, there is no explanation for this except some kind of government corruption.

"Somalia" was never a one country
This is the lies your kind perpetuates
      The Somali Republic was.
But that doesn't fit your narrative.
      Conveniently forgotten history.
That's why we have done something about it. Liberated our homeland.
Restored our sovereignty and sent your parasitic fagash forces packing
A defeat you will never recover from.
You seem to be confusing recognition with independence
Somaliland is a country as much as it pains you. It might not be recognized yet. But, it's only a matter of time and it will be standing long after your federal tribal states of Zoomalia become extinct.
      Not long to go now.
      And Mo Farah is Somalilander
If you think you can dispute that. Then you really need to get you head checked.
      He's actually British news flash.
