When processing a credit card transaction, it's important to get an authorization from the card issuer to let you know that the customer is legitimate. Without an authorization, chargebacks are more likely to happen down the line, resulting in lost revenue for the merchant. Merchants should learn how to best interpret the different codes from card issuers so they know how to best move forward with the transaction.
While the best authorization message to be received is "approved," there are more than 100 different codes that exist, and not all of them mean that the transaction should not take place at all. Many point-of-sale terminals will help interpret these response codes for you, but it's also good for merchants to have their own knowledge to fall back on in times when it's needed.

Understanding credit card response codes and knowing how to handle each of them is an important part of a chargeback defense strategy. Unauthorized charges are always subject to chargebacks, and response codes can give you an early warning that something is wrong with a card or customer and that processing the transaction may lead to a dispute down the line.
