- Building a hollow body jazz guitar, from a kit from Fretwire, based on a ES 175 model. It came with all the components needed, but I changed the neck pick-up to a more jazzy PU from StewMac. Every thing fitted nice together and the overall quality was fine. you need very good soldering skills, I had a friend to help me. I installed a set of heavy flatwound strings 0.012, but i might change them to a ligther set. Now I just have to learn how to play Jazz
One of the most beautiful guitars I've ever seen.
What Iove about your video is that, you intersperse your playing with the construction of the guitar. We don't have to wait until the end to hear what it sounds like. Nice job on the guitar AND the video!!
And the result is a great great guitar !!!
Your sunburst looks amazing. Great job
Nice work and playing!
Just a beautiful guitar! You are inspirational man. I may give it a whirl! You are great at playing that Jazz too!
Brother I got to hand it to you you did an awesome paint job on your guitar beautiful man congrats on a great build I'm going to build a hollow body guitar soon only thing is I'm peralized on the whole left side of my body due to a stroke I just suffered but I'll get it done
Great job. Congratulations!
Lovely guitar and lovely Blue Bossa!!!
2-finger soloing à la Django Reinhardt 😍
Very inspiring. Your video is pushing me closer to taking the diy kit plunge myself. It sounds just like I would expect a 175 to sound, great job. Can I ask how long did the build take start to finish?
Hi, it took around 4-5 weeks including my friends soldering work, it was a great help that I tried to do some colour exsamples first, good luck if you try to build a kit-guitar, it was great fun
Hi Michael, exquisite guitar (the paint job alone... wow)!
I have recently purchased a similar kit, but unfortunately it came with no instructions whatsoever, and I'm at a loss on where to start off from... Any advice?
Hi, I think you should follow the same steps as I did and as shown in the video, you have to decide what kind of color coat you will use, either spray-paint colors or waterbased tint as I have used, if you use spray colors, you will have to cover the bindings (with tape) to prevent them from being painted. I used tint and with a clear spray laquer on top (many, many layers!!) good luck with your guitar building project, it is great fun. Michael
can you let me know which pick up you got from StewMac?
Hi, I chose a "Golden Age" humbucker Pick-up (neck PU), with an Alnico 5 magnet, which should give the warm jazzy tone. I really like the tone it is warm, but also punchy!
ps Does this kit have a sound post( under the bridge) rather than bracing. If so, does it affect the acoustic tone? thanks.
It has a sound post under the bridge to prevent feedback, and it has an impact on the acoustic sound, it is somewhat lower (sound level) than a jazz guitar without a post, but it is high enough to practice without amplifier.
