  • How many times can you reuse yeast?!?! Let's find out!!

    This has been my long term brewing experiment under the last year. Used the same yeast over and over. Using my conical fermenter the Fermentasaurus as a kind of yeast washer. Maybe yeast washing isn't the best terms for it. But I used the collection ball to try to get rid of some trube and the "oldest" yeast.
    So I just could harvest the freshes yeast end re-brew on the old yeast cake. I really wanted to ride this experiment out until things turned bad. And they did.

    My local brew shop in South Africa imported some Kveik, which proved to be both costly but worth it, being able to ferment at +35 Celsius in African heat is invaluable.I immediately made a large starter and separated the resultant yeast into 6 small jars. With careful management/ rotation I reckon I could keep this going for years. My thought process is by using a small jar to make a starter and then replenishing the jar from the starter before pitching into a brew I keep the yeast clean and unstressed.

  • @davidvincent2838
    @davidvincent2838 5 лет назад +2

    it's very interesting how long that last before you saw yucky sidenotes. I've just started saving my yeast and I use the jar method first using some clean water and separating the trub and then use a funnel separator, I like to keep to same beer styles with the washed yeast and I keep everything sanitised and clean of airbourne bacteria because I'm not using a sealed and pressurised system. I have been using the same yeast and have increased the amount of yeast I have over 3 months by more than 8 times just by using a starter with the washed yeast and then cleaning that batch and so on. I've got a few yeast strains stored and I have spend minimal dollars. A lot of them are from dried yeast. I tried it and it works opposed to what many people say. I also have a few commercial strains from bottle fermented brews which work really well and seem to keep well. It takes time of course but it saves a lot of money too.

    Nice exbeeriment there! The fact that your off flavor faded with cold lagering and the beer taken off the yeast cake could indicate that you have some autolysis going on. Maybe there was some old yeast stuck to the wall of the fermentosaurus that finally started to break apart.

    • @michaeljames3509
      @michaeljames3509 5 лет назад

      Yes, three time max, stay with it. Yeast becomes senile. Homebrew info about yeast harvesting is poor. A home brewer does not have the means or knowledge to harvest yeast successfully. Yeast collected from home brew comes from wort that isn't clean, it is unstable, lacks in yeast nutrients and it is chemically imbalanced.

    • @bradleypariah
      @bradleypariah 5 лет назад +2

      @@michaeljames3509 - I have been pitching the same colony of 34/70 for 13 months. I always pitch biotin at the last 5 minutes of the boil for each new batch. I am very careful about sanitizing my yeast jars. After transferring to a keg or secondary, I wash my yeast cake with clean water, let the layers stratify, and decant. My beers come out absolutely fantastic. I don't know if my colony will last *forever,* but your claim that three is the max, and "a home brewer does not have the means or knowledge to harvest yeast successfully"... I mean... are you joking? In this very video, Dr. Hanz said he repitched for 18 ~ 21 generations before he noticed anything, and that's about where I'm at too, so what are you basing your max of three on? Serious question - are you a microbiologist, a commercial brewer, or a yeast expert? I assume nothing. You may know way more than me, but my experience contradicts your claim.
