WTF Happened to BRUCE WILLIS?

  • In our latest WTF series, we take a look at some of our favorite stars and filmmakers who have seemingly disappeared or altered their careers over the years to the point that begs the question; WTF happened? Now, before you think we're just picking on celebrities or running some gossip rag stuff, think again! We take a fun (and sometimes funny), researched and fair approach, looking at all angles that led our subject to wherever they are now (which isn't necessarily a bad place at all). If anything, it answers the question of where these fine folks went, how they got there, and where you can find 'em now.
    There's no doubt that Bruce Willis ranks with the greatest movie stars of all time. From his time as the fast-talking private eye on "Moonlighting" to his breakthrough in DIE HARD, through his more dramatic turns in PULP FICTION, THE SIXTH SENSE, and more, he's the best of the best. But, in recent years his output has been filled with disposable, DTV junk where his roles are supporting at best, and often unworthy of his talent, a fact he seems to realize given his listless performances. So let's take a look at how Willis got here, and how despite everything, there are still flashes of the old Bruce Willis in movies like GLASS and LOOPER.

    Bruce, you were an icon for generations. People loved, laughed, cried and were at awe at the movies you were in. Now go enjoy your retirement. Thanks for being the awesome Bruce Willis we had, have and always will aspire to be ourselves.

    Bruce Willis was my first movie star idol. I adored the guy, loved his 'acting', and still love most of his good movies, but now I see what gets most actors down - their ego. I wanna make a movie about a grumpy old action movie star who gets to do one last action movie, but he can't because his wife got him banned from acting.

    A lot of actors from Bruce Willis' era have been relegated to similar fates; starring in cheap VOD movies made by incompetent people who can't get jobs elsewhere. It's part of the consequence of Hollywood consolidation, i.e. studios investing big in only 3 or 4 tentpole films a year now and abandoning original mid-budget content altogether -- where most of these actors, Willis included, thrived. And I think guys like him have kind of accomplished and achieved as much as they were ever going to, so they don't have anything left to prove and I think that puts them on an autopilot. Also see Robert De Niro. It's really sad but getting older and being phased out of your own business can lead to this kind of terse indifference.

    • @MechaJutaro
      @MechaJutaro 4 года назад +3

      Yeah, it's especially tough for these guys who've become associated with almost entirely with action roles. Willis has done impressive work in "non-genre" movies, it's true.... But these non-genre roles were mostly in flicks that have gone largely unseen

    • @RaiceGeriko

      This. Folks just don't understand the business of Hollywood. I won't go into it in detail, but basically, we know who a lot of these A-List actors like Bruce WIllis are because of their work in 80's and 90's Mid-Budget films. These movies made so much money because they cost so little to make--well, so little to make compared to Tentpole films. Willis has a few hits in that category post 2000: Hostage and 16 Blocks comes to mind. Hostage was him doing his normal thing. But 16 Blocks--this video doesn't do it justice. He actually plays against type in that film. He's actually trying in that one.
      Bruce Willis should see about making a move to an Amazon series or something if he wants to get that sort of thing back. He maybe doesn't want to put in the work, though. He has nothing else to prove. That said, I'd love to see him play something like a Columbo or a Perry Mason. Not those exactly. Just something like that. It would be good for him in his Twilight years.

    • @riffbw
      @riffbw 4 года назад +5

      But not many had the same range as Willis did or the ability to branch out in to other genres. Arnie did some comedy, but drama was never his thing. Sly did some drama and shines as a writer, but I never saw much from him on the comedy front.
      Wills showed he didn't need to be type cast as an action hero, but kept taking the paychecks from roles that made him appear that he could only do one thing.

    Fun fact: Live Free or Die Hard was not filmed as a PG-13 movie. Filming had already started when Fox told Wiseman that the release date was being changed for 4th of July weekend and they wanted it to be PG-13 for a bigger box office. Wiseman continued filming a rated R movie and left it to the editing team to handle. That's why the unrated version flows so well and isn't just deleted scenes.

    I had no idea what the Sixth Sense was gonna be about when I saw it in theaters when I was in 6th grade. My brother and our cousin were really the ones who went, I just tagged along. Bruce Willis was the only reason I was slightly interested. When the big reveal happens around the half way point, I remember being more scared then I've ever been watching a movie. I think being in the theaters is what helped. Say what you want about that movie and the effects; it was the most scared I have ever been during a movie. People don't seem to remember what it was like when this and The Ring came out and we had no idea what it gonna be about. It's weird to think about because they are both dated and iconic now, but not knowing what those movies were gonna be about and just watching them was most scared I have ever been. Still have yet to watch Heredity. haha.

    Well, as we know you were wrong and it wasn't boredom, but a brain disorder health problem diagnosed as aphasia, which affects his ability to speaking, reading, and memory issues. It had been going on for years, but was publicly first caught in the movie Glass, when he had such trouble remembering and speaking his lines. In previous movies, he had trouble with hitting his cues with action movies, and he later stated he had struggled for almost 20 years. People with aphasia tend to start to become more bored looking, having trouble expressing their emotions, even though that isn't the case. He is retired now officially, but it was good having him while we could.

      He has had really weird career likely due to his own decisions. It's like he knows he can pull off more interesting nuanced characters and does it now and again. But he can't help but want to do more "tough guy bad as*" movies which inevitably leads him to misjudge projects and pick some real crap scripts that end up putting him on the downswing. Especially in the last decade or so. He seems way to wrapped up in being a crotchety "tough guy". Probably doesn't help that it's all he's done for awhile now and it's his legit real life personality, so those are the only roles he gets offered anymore.

      I found out everything I needed to know about him when he did an interview for BBC Radio 1 a few years ago to promote a movie.
      The DJ even had to explain before they played the recording that they are aware that for a celebrity to sit in a hotel room all day long doing long strings of press interviews to promote movies can be exhausting and boring for them so to try and lighten their day they always go into the interview with a set of questions that are fun and have almost nothing to do with the movie at all. The celebrities usually get it immediately and are really thankful to not have to answer the same questions over and over.
      Anyway they played the interview, he seemed completely uninterested. They tried to make him laugh, he didn’t take the bait. They tried to get him to have some fun, again, no dice.
      Afterwards the guy who interviewed him said yeah he was NOT in a good mood. He said the second I walked through the door he was like “oh god not another one”. But that’s not the most frustrating part. So usually with a celebrity interview, just before we leave we ask them very kindly for a quick soundbite for the station. Usually we just get them to say something short like I’m Bruce Willis and whenever I’m in the UK I listen to BBC Radio 1 or whatever. They’re always happy to do it because they’re advertising whatever it is they’re trying to sell for free on our show. Well this is what happened when we asked Bruce for a soundbite...
      “Just before we go could we ask a huge favour and get you to quickly quote a soundbite for us into a mic?”
      *Bruce, very seriously: “Sure. That’ll be a million dollars.”
      (At this point the interviewer is audibly uncomfortable and makes a lighthearted joke about maybe doing the recording first and negotiating the money later.
      “Nope. You want me to advertise your radio show you gotta pay me a million dollars. Cut the cheque, I’ll say whatever you want”.
      Jesus, the guy was the biggest douchebag ever to walk the planet. He has made millions on his movies and at the time of "Die Hard" he was the highest paid action hero becasue no one would do that script and he took a chance of killing his career. So the point is at 65 some people just slow down and want to just take the money they earned in life and spend it. Have a little fun. We call that retirement and every once in a bit he might do a role here and there that takes no effort on his part just to keep busy.

      me too I love the hell out of that movie and Bruce Willis is one of my all time favorite actors..I don't think 12 monkeys is my favorite from him but it never gets old..I remember first seeing it when I was 11 in 96 and it confused the hell out of me but I'm a sucker for time travel and I kept watching it over and over and finally when I was like 23 I began to understand it..mostly at least..some things I'm still confused about

      I don’t think he ever believed that at all, especially alongside Arnie & Stallone as the Hollywood Action stars of their day. His insecurity is pretty plain to see however.

      i disagree,
      this is more like what happens when actors are badass before they are movie characters,
      because ,you see when you are a badass before becoming an actor, it is then easier to act badass in movies.
      its a confidence thing i think, and one needs lots of confidence to become an actor.
      atleast thats what im guessing he thinks lol

    I actually worked on Die Hard 3 and the story was that Bruce had loudly complained that unions and crew wages were the reasons that more films weren't being made. This didn't sit well with workers making a tiny fraction of his multi-million salary and at the end of the day Bruce found his car coated with spit and and urine.

      At first, I thought you were referring to Willis, then I saw which thread this was on.
      Yes Hartnet bookended the movie. And the opening scene wasn't just a selling point for the audience, it was the big selling point to Frank Miller to get the movie made in the first place! So happy that it worked!
      But "Sleven" was Hartnet's biggest movie that I can think of, and super awesome!
