This game had sooooo much potential. I love the idea of picking up fighting moves like you pick up weapons in an MMO. It's really sad it was dead on arrival.
Yeah, absolutely. Thankfully Sifu is a stellar follow up. Hopefully, they might try to re-use the concept after learning a lot of lessons from Absolver.
@@JustinVGR I have been saying this for years. Watch SloClap's Absolver DevLogs and tell me those guys aren't more passionate than you expected them to be. I have faith. They just need to nail down some better deck-limiting mechanics, as they were already decent at making varied moves... I do hope that weapon decks get expanded upon, if Absolver II comes to pass.
You know, it saddens me to see such an interesting concept get abandoned like this. We never got to see bo staffs get implemented to this game, or anything outside the game's sandbox and the Downfall update. I've been wondering how it would've been if this game had succeeded. Would we have been able to fight off lions in the desert? Or perhaps defend ourselves from pirates while sailing in raging seas? The little crumbs of lore I got from reading the object descriptions still haunt me to this day.
I think Absolver might still be my most-played game ever on Steam. It's still #1 in my Top 3 favorite games. Nothing has come even remotely close to feeling as good as this game does. Not even Sifu. There's too much in that game that feels outside of my control, particularly compared to Absolver. Here's hoping SloClap does us forever fans the justice of giving us the sequel we deserve. To this day, I still play Absolver off and on and I don't think I'll ever stop. It's that good. Sifu just doesn't hold a candle to Absolver for me for one simple reason: Everything I do in Absolver belongs to _me._ I defeat my enemies based on a combination of moves that _I came up with._ Absolver's entire core design philosophy is "Knowledge Check: The Game," from your Deck on up to every Deck you face in combat. Not only that, I can differentiate between multiple versions of that Deck, or even do totally different ones if I want to focus on Sword or Gauntlet, or compliment any of the other Styles. Sifu isn't even close to comparable in that sense of ownership. Also, the drip in Absolver is fucking awesome. 😆
An excellent breakdown! I'm seconding what Heb said in that this definitely feels like you took the time to really absorb the game and come back with an honest explanation of it! Bravo!

Early 2024 had the release of another game that played like a light RPG where you find combat moves and styles/stances, that goes by name of Clash: Artifacts of Chaos. It's a prequel of the Zeno Clash zeries, which were first person brawlers set in a kind of prehistoric world full of absurd freaks, monsters, mutations and bizarre buttwads. Clash: AoC was ACE Team's first venture into a third person viewpoint and it's honestly a really good and fun game. Greatly recommend looking into that one. Combat mechanics are at first glance quite simply: You can equip, at a Totem or Training Dummy, any of two stances to then swap between during combat, as well as assign a Special Attack to three inputs of the Special Attack button. A parry move is always available, which if connected slows down an enemy a slight bit and adds extra to the Focus Bar (essentially a "special meter" that puts player character Pseudo in a first person mode. If enough hits connect, he performs a special finisher on the enemy) A Stance always consists of: - A combo string (three or four hits) - A charge attack - An attack from a run - An attack from a jump - Attack from a forward dodge - Attack from a backward dodge - Attack from a sideways dodge. It's all pretty easy to keep track of, but *no* stance has overlapping animations. They're all unique from one another. And it's quite fun to try and make your own style out of it all. This usually has to be done via exploring: New stances and special attacks can only be found at totems that supply a combat arena which you have to win. Now I feel like maybe I was missing out lol... Good video man! Really good quality for a 100 subscriber channel, I'm sure you will grow quickly :)
Absolver is all about the comp, pvp. The pc community pretty much took it into their own hands and were basically able to continue developing it somewhat through the use of a mod and they did pretty well its alot of fun. Base game is still active on Sony's side I'm not sure about Microsoft's side of the multiverse tho. Absolver is a game where you have to put in hella hrs before you actually start discovering what makes it great it would really be difficult for me to explain but in short, the players make the game fun to play, as well as infuriating lol but the good time is in the combat trials(pvp). Absolver is legendary if you ask me, and if they had incorporated pvp and deck building and customization into Sifu, man THAT would have shook up the comp fighting scene 100%
wish it didn't take so damn long to learn moves or if there was an easier way to get moves there's a whole spreadsheet on where the moves are, who uses them, and the mobs appearance. and if it's an ending/finisher you're gonna be there for a while as the mob might not even use that move most of the time.
I remeberd playing it, but just as the "hype" died down, The competitive scene would have gone so hard for this game, it would have just been so clean.
I remember first getting the game years ago. Actually, I pre-ordered it on a whim and got some nice white robes. I stopped playing after beating the game but I might as well go back since now I know the supremacy of a controller.. And not a mouse.
I preordered the game and was so sad that they didn't keep supporting it and expanding the world. I liked that they added a small expansion in the form of Downfall but they could have done more :(
I think the reason people don’t like this game is the adaptability of the AI. Since people always want to feel invincible when playing games they always hate on things that make them need to learn, maybe thats why Absolver gets a bad rep
Used to be good when It was free, now avarage fight is some who has a perfect set of moves and button mashes the hell out of you. Unique mechanics but legit a beginner can get like 3 new moves then spam punch you to death. Also there's nothing to save you from infinite stun or wall bang, meaning a fight doesn't even last 5 seconds.
@ironyan1188 So... from what I have found, they seem to have PS4/PS5 crossplay, but not for PS/PC. Not sure about xbox, but I'm guessing it wouldn't have it either. Bummer.
You overcomplicated the explanation of the moveset customization. End game decks do not have to be full of moves, only a specific goal you are working towards, and the moves on the right are if you press the secondary attack button. They are there so that you have an option to break out of your usual flowchart, whatever flowchart that may be. This is actually fairly limited once you have a moveset made, this is why you also have your fighting style defencive options (I used to play Drunken Style), and the extra weapon slot. The weapon slot in my playtime was really good and let you come in with a completely new deck of fighting moves you made for the weapon and you can flow into the weapon fairly seemlessly with your flowchart. That is where the fighting actually gets complicated, not the customization. The customization only feels 'complicated' because you are burdened to make something that is viable and good.
sifu is not better, it's just a more simplified and polished iteration of absolver which makes it more appealing to wider audience absolver is a tad too complex for its own good
I remember having a lot of fun playing this game. However the diversity in moves that were actually viable was WAAAY too low. There wasn't really any counter play against fast and high damaging moves. Even if your character was built like a tank it simply didn't matter against actual good players. On top of that the net code for that game is just horrendous. Again it was a really fun game with A LOT of problems that the devs just didn't seem to care about fixing or adjusting.
I basically spent most of my free time in middle school and freshman year of high school playing this game. I met tons of people through it and still talk to them today. It really pains me to see this game fall further into obscurity since it was a pretty big part of my life when I was younger

I am hoping that after the success of sifu they will consider a second game, I feel like the scale of the world was small as the whole project and it felt like a prototype. Sifu feels like they truly commited to making a fully realized game and I want absolver and its world to get the same love
Absolver content from someone that hasnt already been playing it in 2024?!?! It's almost insane to me. And a well made video too! Reminded me of the good times I had on this game. Actually kinda making me want to redownload it and play downfall, as I stopped playing before it came out and I felt like I had done literally everything the game had to offer. Which anyone can tell you, is not really a lot. Haha. Wish they couldve tried and push this game to it's full potential.
Also as an extreme souls fan I adored the vaatividya bit. Lol
Downfall is really good, but I think the base game is slightly better. Having said that, definitely try it!
Vaati makes great content, haha
always upvote Absolver ; underrated af
Absolutely underrated
i LOVE absolver, still one of my fav fighting games. i just wish i could teach myself those fucking crazy ass glitch tricks some people use
Yeah, I saw the wall glitch that speed runners use to beat the final boss, that shit is wild
@@JustinVGR when i say glitch tricks i mean the shit where they will stop locking onto you, then hit the air behind you with a certain move which will put you out of range faster than a dodge and with less stamina, then stunlock you with another certain combo that you practically cant get out of lmao
watch justas he has some insane absolver clips
I remember seeing trailers of this game before it released thinking it looked cool. I was really into for honor at the time so this one caught my eye. But when it released, I did the mistake of just listening to reviewers that were shitting on it and never tried it for myself. With time I completely forgot it even existed. Now I feel like maybe I was missing out lol...
Good video man! Really good quality for a 100 subscriber channel, I'm sure you will grow quickly :)
Thank you. It has been very, very slow growth, but I'll keep truckin'
I really liked Kahlt method, because it feels like your character just flexes too hard
My favourite part is that khalt doesn't require a correct direction input, making it much, much easier to use 😂
@@JustinVGR I mean it makes sense, you don‘t need to move when you do nothing but basicially flex your body and tank the hit
Absolver is just modern day God Hand.
notif gang 🔥🔥
hope you're having a great christmas my dude ❣
Thanks man, I'm doing good. Merry Christmas!
Im the 100th subscriber good luck on the content grind 👍
Thanks 👍 Glad I could reach this milestone
leaving a comment for the algorithm
Hahaha. My man👍
I still play, no cheese. I just like a good fight
Absolver is legendary if you ask me, and if they had incorporated pvp and deck building and customization into Sifu, man THAT would have shook up the comp fighting scene 100%
wish it didn't take so damn long to learn moves or if there was an easier way to get moves
there's a whole spreadsheet on where the moves are, who uses them, and the mobs appearance. and if it's an ending/finisher you're gonna be there for a while as the mob might not even use that move most of the time.
I ve spend lots of time on this game, i did buy it day one, that s so sad sloclap didn t keep the work on it or plan on doing a 2
king review
I remeberd playing it, but just as the "hype" died down, The competitive scene would have gone so hard for this game, it would have just been so clean.
Hey cool video! Kinda impressed you don't have more subscribers. This review made me want to give it a second try after 100% Sifu
Nice sifu 2
I played this game a few years it came out and it was very fun getting my butt kick
I liked that they added a small expansion in the form of Downfall but they could have done more :(
Apparently the game did OK, but Downfall wasn't the boost that they wanted, which is a real shame, I'd love more content for the game, for sure.
I own both games I will be playing both tonight lol
Nice!
Bolver
I think the reason people don’t like this game is the adaptability of the AI. Since people always want to feel invincible when playing games they always hate on things that make them need to learn, maybe thats why Absolver gets a bad rep
Used to be good when It was free, now avarage fight is some who has a perfect set of moves and button mashes the hell out of you.
Unique mechanics but legit a beginner can get like 3 new moves then spam punch you to death.
Also there's nothing to save you from infinite stun or wall bang, meaning a fight doesn't even last 5 seconds.
Wait Sifu was made by THEM??
Oh yeah 😎
It was Awfull netcode that killed this game.
Oh, was it really bad on release? I had a few online matches and there were OK considering how bad my internet is
It's cool but the pacing feels off, that or I'm not that far into it, that or I just suck at it.
It can be a little slow, but give it some time, you'll get there 👍
sifu 2
is there crossplay on absolver ?
@@ironyan1188 According to Steam, it is, but I can't confirm. I would hope it is. The online stuff is pretty interesting, but I didn't do much of it.
@@JustinVGR i used to play on ps4 and I want to gift the game on my friend on pc but as i'm not sure about crossplay....
@@ironyan1188 I'll look into it too, I'm genuinely curious.
The customization only feels 'complicated' because you are burdened to make something that is viable and good.
calling all ps4 prospects
this game has stolen well over 100 hours from me and i don’t regret a single second;unless its cheese pvp fight)
sifu is not better, it's just a more simplified and polished iteration of absolver which makes it more appealing to wider audience
absolver is a tad too complex for its own good
I remember having a lot of fun playing this game.
