As a freshman at Harvard University, Ben Abercrombie was an accomplished football player who earned a spot on the active roster. But when a cervical spinal-cord injury left him living with paralysis, his athletic and academic plans were thrown into question. That’s when BAYADA Home Health Aide Karen Dixon stepped in to offer the support needed to maintain his comfort and accomplish his goal of living on campus at Harvard while completing his degree.
According to Karen, treating clients like family is an essential element to quality caregiving, and she made Ben’s return to campus smoother by studying exercises off the to keep him comfortable. Along the way, they formed a strong personal bond through their daily conversations about school and football.
Why is Karen Dixon our BAYADA 2024 CHHA National Hero of the Year? Because she’s a learner and a lover of people, who gets the most out of her client relationships.
