It's because of the hyper-romanticized ideal of love. I grew up with traditional men and their love language was provision. Sure, as a young girl being fed all the romantic stuff, I thought, well, they're not too in their feelings and talking talking talking....I want a man that expresses his love verbally but now looking back at my granda and father's love language, I kinda prefer it. Those men saw what needed to be done and did it for their families. They took pride in keeping food on the table and spending money in their wives' purses. My mom worked at her small business and dad still sent her money monthly. Same with my granda.
I've dated someone that was vocal about love...bla bla bla...love love love... but the actions didn't match those words. Love is a verb for me now. If you love, you would do what needs to be done. You can't be saying you love me and be fine with me paying all the bills while you pay just the electric bills.

Y'all remember Tyler's movie Acrimony when that woman worked like a dog and her husband did nothing to contribute. Then Tyler turned that character into mental case, bitter, angry & unhinged black woman for being abused, betrayed and used like a work mule. He wrote that character to punish black women for not remaining loyal to ride or die cause on the rare case that he finally becomes successful. This man is diabolical and sinister.

My husband and I both make >100K. I was stopped at work today by a black security guard who asked me what I thought of the black man and the black woman. I immediately knew what he was getting at. I pretended to need more clarity to the question and deflected the same question back to him in a different way. You know black men just want to speak their piece anyway so it didn’t take long for him to spew the nonsense about the government kicking the BM out of the house and how BW think they are “up here” and trying to be the man. Then came the speech about how we need each other and BM can only talk to a BW. I didn’t say much but on this I did ask him So who can BW talk to? He was stumped on that one for a minute. He also asked me if I knew “the hierarchy”. I swear. This man has no clue who he is talking to (or maybe he did hence why he questioned me). I’m 52 years old and have had their number since the 80’s.

Since we are realizing our counterparts aren’t equal to us, we are not falling for struggle anymore. What does Tyler make? Struggle content. He can’t push something out to people who don’t absorb it anymore. He’s trying to do some reverse manipulation tactic, so he can get his main supporters (bw) back and he can finally become a trillionaire 🤭.

Most of the time these n*ggas lose their jobs because they’re not good employees and a lot of them will willingly quit a job when they know they got women who’ll take care of them who’s money they can fall back on. The fact that most of these men aren’t ashamed of asking their women for money and on the contrary actually adamantly will ask their women for money is very telling.
And in addition to not paying these n*ggas rent black women need to stop dating men who have female “best friends” because 99% of the time they’re screwing those women or have screwed them before at some point.
That dude was using you for money while he used that money on the other women he was sleeping with. He likely had his female “bestie” often at his place and that’s likely the only reason he wasn’t living with you to begin with because most of the time these dusties will move in with black women so that they don’t have to pay rent on their own and either go 50/50 or make less and be taken care of by black women who already have their own place & money. But that dusty wanted privacy so that he could cheat, and literally cheated in the place that you gave him rent money for.
And that’s what black women need to understand is that when you give men money they’ll use it to go spend it on other women.

I remember on an Oprah show in the early to mid 2000s where this young college educated black man said he had a three tier dating system for women. For Top tier women, he'd lock a Friday night or Saturday night date down by calling them on Monday or Tues to make sure they would be available! He said these types of women would more than likely already have a date if he didn't call at least 5 or 6 days before. Middle tier women he would start calling Wednesday or Thursday for a Friday or Saturday night date because he knew there was less competition for them from other men. Bottom tier women he'd call the day of or an hour before he wanted to go out because he knew they'd more than likely be available or would always be available! The audience seemed a little uncomfortable and even shocked that he'd say it out loud on tv, but he smiled through his whole explanation and did not stutter! I imagine that a lot of men might handle their dating life like they wouldn't admit it, especially on tv!

I know I’m not a black woman, but honestly it’s really sad to see that when black women want stability it is seen as a bad thing. You are NOT a gold digger or a bad woman for wanting a better future for yourself and/ your children.
Look at Latin, Turkish, and Asian (Korean, Chinese, Indian.. etc) soap operas/dramas. I can only count on my hands how many of them talk about struggle love. If anything, they all just point out that if you do decide to go through struggle love then you’re gonna end up having to pay in the future. Instead they all point out about marrying up, or finding a partner as equally motivated as you. Not saying marrying up is always better, but it makes me so annoyed how in American culture it is seen as a bad thing to want a man to be financially stable.
Men that can’t provide or want to make money off from you are the only ones worried about you not wanting to settle for dusties.

In "Daddy's Little Girls", Gabriel Union's character was portrayed the same way and ended up having to date down to finally find love. And "Acrimony" (as several other people mentioned) really showed his hatred for BW and ended it with the character suffering because she just didn't hold on long enough for the struggle bandit. Why would anyone look down on someone with an arranged marriage that survived and may have even blossomed into love. That is strength. If you are trying to say there are possible cons to an arranged marriage, that’s different.
But that’s besides the point. The point is that marriage was never as spiritual and emotional as we make it out to be. The government banks on you marrying and they track it with paperwork. They tax you as such, no matter how in love or religious you may be. It will always be business, if not to you, then the government.

The idea of arranged marriages isn’t inherently bad, and could actually have many benefits in out more modernized societies. It’s just that they still give majority of people an ick because of how they were practiced during the times they were most popular. Also the fact that the few cultures that still practice them in large still have that problematic age gap issue, doesn’t help. 😓

Just wanted to add to the conversation that the movies Stomp the Yard and Drumline both had the same theme of the upwardly mobile BW choosing the lower class BM from the hood, and that these weren't Tyler Perry movies.
In these films, the lower class BM is chosen either because he seemingly has more emotional intelligence than the more upwardly mobile guy (in Stomp the Yard, the upwardly mobile guy is an aspiring lawyer who's father is also a lawyer, but he gets ditched after proposing to Meagan Good's character because he can't guess her favorite color), and/or because he's a standout at what he does (Columbus Short's dancing in Stomp the Yard; Nick Cannon's drumming in Drumline).
Ditching the upwardly mobile guy, or choosing the guy from the hood with a good heart, is a pervasive theme in Black movies, and apparently, a favorite fantasy of BM scriptwriters in general.

I don't know if Drumline is a good example though. From what I remember of the film the character that Nick Cannon plays does go through a major character development during the second and third act.
We see him progress from an immature and prideful man who was unwilling to humble himself to properly learn his craft to a skilled musician who is able to maintain good friendships and navigate college. If he were to stay on that track then I could see why the female lead chose to stay with him. I do think you made a good point with the Stomp The Yard critique though.

Chrissie i was just saying this regarding DDG and Halle!! So many black women are defending ddg. Not because of any other reason except that watching a goddess like Halle lower her standards for an unsuccessful goblin like DDG makes them feel less stupid about their own baby daddy goblins. Some black women are agreeing with tyler perry simply because misery loves company.
Secondly, i grew up in the ghetto (newark, nj) during the crack epidemic. Im here to tell u, dusty broke men from the hood do not have hearts of gold like damn aladdin. Some of yall watched that movie too many times and youre delusional. If i could tell you the amount of dusty inflicted violence i witnessed before the age of 13 yall would stop listening to these tyler perry dust sermons and come to your senses. Poverty doesnt equal a good heart and youre literally crazy if you think so. Im so grateful my mom moved us out of the hood. In an Ebony article I read in the mid 80s about colorism, it was called being "colorstruck" back then, a beautiful dark-skinned black woman said she overheard a conversation her father was having with his male friend about her and her two younger sisters. He said "I'm going to make sure my oldest girl gets a good education because she's gonna have a harder time finding a husband to care of her because she's darker than her sisters!" She was shocked at what he said but she knew he loved her and he said it because he felt that's how men are. But as she got older she did laugh at the fact that both her younger lighter skinned sisters married before she did, both in their twenties. She actually didn't get married until she was 34!

Yes, it's hard to get a high paying job, but if women are able to do it despite the barriers of sexism and childrearing, what's men's excuse? Yes a lot of the factory and coal mining jobs are gone, but that's been the case for decades, time for these dudes to think up a new plan and go get a nursing degree. I'm sorry, but unless you're a full time caretaker raising children and caring for a disabled elder, you better be able to work a full time job and pay at least half. No one is obligated to take on an adult dependent who simply doesn't feel like pulling their weight because they'd rather take advantage of someone else instead.

Y'know, I married a good man back in the 70s. He was unemployed until we got married, but he joined the army & had a dishonorable discharge for theft, & fighting. But he loved me. Then he got a job, stole about $8k from his employer & was sentenced to 9yrs hard labor, but he's still a good man because he only beat the kids on school days. When he was released from prison in the 80s, he seemed a bit strange, thinner, had sores all over him but he was still a good man because he had no where else to go.
He died in the hospital a good man & I died at home of AIDS related complications in 1985.

This is me thinking out loud, but as a 28-year-old black woman who moved back in with my parents after being financially irresponsible while living with a black man I completely agree with your sentiments about following whatever path best assist you in becoming who you want to be. I thought that being the breadwinner while making the man feel like a man would somehow push him to be a better man, but it actually made him more of a child, and eventually emasculated him. Today I have to ask myself the question of what do I have to do now to get where I want to be? And the answer is simple save as much money as possible to move out ,finish college (I have a semester or two left), believe below my means, and look my best for maximum confidence. I have decided that I’m really going to send to the next five years around myself, and my progression rather than focusing on how I can be appealing or attractive to the other sex because I really do believe that a lot of the issues arise in this type of conversation due to the fact that so many individuals come from lack and a mail center point of view versus just being happy with yourself and your future
