  • Gene McNeely presents his racing North American AT-6 Texan with impressive style. Turn up the speakers as this race-tuned Pratt & Whitney R-1340-AN-1 Wasp radial engine (nominally 650 hp) sings like a opera tenor hitting a high C. This is what is known as a Buzz-job! The prop tips are going supersonic which makes the distinctive rasping noise. Gene is flying by at around 230mph but it seems a lot faster! Low and graceful with nicely executed aerobatics. Gene shows how it's done.

I live in a village next to what used to be the home of the 457th BG during the war. We regularly have a texan visit the airfield called ' wacky wabbit'... I don't need to see it to know it has arrived

This was recorded at the Akron, Colorado Radial Engine fly in a couple of years ago. I'd never seen a race prepped T6 zoom by and was very impressed with the speed and noise generated by Gene's Texan. The Aerobatic maneuvers were very nicely presented and shows what is possible in this normally sedate aircraft. North American designed the Texan as an advanced trainer with retracts and variable prop. The next step up the ladder was a P-51 which was a solo deal.

There is no sound in aviation that compares to the Texan.
