Man.... The thing that I love about all your builds is how well thought out, executed and just STOUT everything is. This splitter is going to last 10 lifetimes... Mini Me is going to pass it down to his grandkids for sure!
@@zzzires5045 I bet he'll keep this thing inside when he isn't using it, or at least covered. I keep both of our splitters inside and the one didn't even have primer or paint on it for the first 15 years of it's life, still was in perfect shape, just surface rust. About 5 years ago (maybe longer) I gave it a make over, cleaned it up good and primed and painted it. Should be good for a while. I think the key to is keeping it out of the elements and UV, so don't leave anything outside if you can help it.
My question is: why build a log splitter when he built an entire wood processor a year ago? That included a log splitter! This one is to bring onsite directly I guess🤷♂️🤔
I'm liking how this looks! It's gonna last about forever, barring some fool with a cutting torch. The lifting wedge is genius; it'll save a ton of work when it's in action. Thanks for sharing!
I was just reading a news article about your President Alar Karis running into Hillary Clinton at a bookstore here in Ontario Canada and then I open RUclips and see this video. What a happy coincidence. Your linkage engineering is fantastic. That splitting wedge looks like it will work amazingly.
I see like everyone else, Donn works off the corner of his bench where the vise is. Occasionally moving the other "important" stuff out of the way to make room for larger projects.
19:06 This part may cause some problems: It pushes the splitted wood up which will push the wings of the wedge, if the wings are not strong enough, they may bend because of this or the wood gets jammed under the wings. Maybe it will work without problems, but in my view it would be more fail-safe if the wood has at least 1-2 cm to expand downwards, so it doesn't get stuck under the wings of the wedge.
Unless i missed something, that should be regular steel (the blade), if it is, consider adding a metal strip at the very edge that can be hardened. You could then use one of those coil heaters to heat the edge before dipping it in oil. One of the best blades i had on any spliter was made in this fashion. Not my idea, bought from a fabricator near me. I've run about 40 full sized trees through it, and it still retains a decent edge, haven't had to sharpen it once despite the quite acute angle. It's also considerably less work on the small 3.5 hp Honda with a cheapo pump that came with the og frame.
The blades look like they are Hardox, the replaceable edge of excavator buckets. that stuff can tear through rocks so I doubt wood will give it trouble.
well done! On the knife, the side wings are too long, a large shoulder is obtained, and if a load falls on one of them, then the vertical knife bends. I did not shorten much on my wood splitter. sorry i use google translator
There is a brand Rayco that makes a really nice unit with the 4 way splitter on it and adjustable height. RAYCO Log Splitter DieselFords The video is 14 years old. The way they built it is the best I have seen and as far as I know they still make it the same way and its stout and very strong. Its a beast of a machine.
I hate being their going through the box of bolts knowing you've still got matching ones and usually go through it twice before you find what ur after, I have a 6in ram for my own splitter project hope to shove the whole log in one so thanks for inspiration
I was thinking something similar about the "junk" box. What I've done is put the matching nuts (and washers if I have them) on the bolts they fit. That way I only have to find ONE item 😄
@Mr Koges sir I live in Pakistan, but it's my dream to see Russia and meet you Thanks and Regards for inviting ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 Sorry for my poor English
A Transformer log splitter. Going to take more power pushing them logs into the blade, VS a blade pushing into the log! To split it > Going to need a crane to move it.. Your are a DAM GOOD WELDER 👍 Better than me. I'am a good welder
0:10 don't you just love it when that happens? I mean, we're in 2022, and even assuming this wasn't made in this decade, it's still made after the industrial revolution and the concept of jigging exists and they're still not using it. It's like alien technology for them.
very little use of the cnc plasma on this build? I´ve noticed all of the comments on other projects that they miss the angle grinder but the cnc is such a awesome tool! Maybe 50/50 work so people still can se that things can be made with easy tools but also that they really need their own cnc plasma. ;)
@@DonnDIY Hi Donn, I was referring to using your manual Plasma Cutter. YOu are definitely fast with the grinder and very accurate. I thought it might be because the grinder leaves a cleaner surface.
Any wood splitters i have used had the control's moving in the same direction as the cylinder travel, and the operator stood opposite the lifting arm, so the arm becomes a table. didn't you build a wood conveyor out of an old hay conveyor? maybe that was someone else..lol
Just a question out of curiosity. I understand that the cutter part will be moved hydraulically as well. I've worked a machine where the cutter itself is manually risen and lowered. The thing is that it can be basically only risen without using your arms to move the already split wood from under the blade. Have you thought how to address that problem?
It has been awhile since the youtube algorithms have suggested your videos… didnt you make a log splitter already? Anyone know why he is making a new one?

Manufacturing companies will build this to last a season or 2, Donn builds to last 10 generations, I love it

Так вот чего мне не хватало сегодня вечером! Нового видоса от Donna)))
Лайк однозначно! За труды и за неисчерпаемость идей! 👍

Your mixed use of abrasive grinders and plasma cutter is mind boggling.
I often wake up at nights to wonder this. Current winning theory is sheer laziness to pull and hook up the burner handle.
Hello 🙋♂️from the Netherlands🇳🇱 .
thanks for the video Donn .

You are a great engineer congratulations I envy you
Bud I hate it when you leave me hanging! Looking good!
Dont know why people troll this guy, he does amazing work
Cool video as always
Coming along very nicely !! Can't wait to see this split some wood !!👍👍👍Very nice fabrication skills !!
Been watching the entire build. Damn you are one talented guy!
This is pure RUclips gold 🤩🫡
Cheers from Norway 🇳🇴 👍🏻 😀
Some mighty fine engineering.
Спасибо за твой труд и твои идеи не пропускаю не однаго видео
I have seen people test the rams with air ,, that way if wrong you don't have a oil mess when you have to change something Great work so far ,,
A splitting cross made of Hardox is a good idea. It could last a long time. 😁 Good Job Master. 👋

ALWAYS awesome videos and builds Donn. I've built a few splitters and I think you'll find that you need a 4 inch ram ,minimum. Keep up tge GREAT work
