The first place I recall hearing this was from The Smurfs. Everytime I still hear it I think of Gargamel! But what a joy to listen to the entire piece of music. The Smurfs were my introduction to classical music and fostered an interest in the Middle Ages. Thank you Smurfs for a lifetime of enjoyment!
This is one of the most lyrical pieces I know......the for of the orchestra is awesome, really thank you God for sending us Korsakov....I think he's one of of the most influences composers of all....
Our marching band did Scheherazade during my freshman year. So beautiful, and it was my first ever marching show... I cry every time I listen to it because of the memories it holds for me. I will always be a band geek
MAGNIFICANT !!! I noticed 11 thumbs down - I am completely dumbfounded as to how anyone in their right mind could not love this music and video. I could listen and watch all day long.
this is so beautiful,,when i was a little girl,i can remember my dad playing this,my older sister and me still are very moved when we talk about our memories and the emotions it stirrs whenever we hear it,,i can close my eyes and get lost in some distant place,,words can not describe,,,thank you
There were lots of great composers, but this SCHEHERAZADE, is my favorite piece of music. The violin soloist does a wonderful job. Everytime I listen to this I'm transported, to a ship, like in an old movie, rolling on the sea, with adventure ahead. No other piece of music can quite do the same thing. Only this can take me to a world more colorful, exciting, and fun filled. Thank you Moscow Symphony. Thank you Rimsky-Korsakov. And thank you ArthurArnold for posting this.
Bravissimo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! To the upteenth degree. I have found what I lost so many years ago. I am in love all over again. This has always been my first love. My once and future. What are you guys debating? I wasn't paying attention. The most beautiful music I have ever or will ever hear. Thank you, Russia!! Take it all in and close your eyes and let it flow. YES!! So do it!!!!
I grew up listening to this master piece among with Beethoven, Motzart and many other great composers's music !! I thank my father for introducing me into this wonderful musical world! I think all parents should do the same with their kids! ;)
such an amazing composition, this scheherazade. everytime i listen to it, i can visualize so many different things. The style of this is just incredible. I never get sick of it, especially the 3rd part. just amazing. Rimsky is so great a painting a picture, making a movie just out of music and our imagination.
When I was a young lad back in 1958 (in junior high school here in southern Maryland), my 9th-grade music appreciation teacher (a *VERY* beautiful 20-something-year-old woman; a recent college graduate) played this tune in her classroom from "Scheherazade" by the great Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908). It was my introduction to European Classical music. I was IN LOVE with her! --- Michael Robert McGarrett Port Tobacco, Maryland USA Friday, 5 March 2010
I have heard this very video for over 10 years now... And I still believe Sheherazade looked like the prime violinist in this video. This automatically brings me to better times, when people I loved was alive and I was reading One thousand and one nights... By the way, I think this is the best performance of this piece, to this day... Cheers to all from Mexico.
This is the BEST interpretation of Scheherazade I've ever heard, bar none! 37 years ago the Berliner Philharmoniker was the tops in my book (Deutsche Grammophon label), but the Moscow Symphony is outstanding! Each section of the orchestra is singing to the other with Elena being the object of their attention...she pours her heart into the piece! Her sustains are perfect and inflections, flawless. Arthur Arnold's interpretation of the piece is, I believe, true to what Nikoli intended.
I saw this performed at Powell Hall by the St. Louis Orchestra. It was only my second experience with classical music. The first time I saw the STL Orchestra I liked it but after this performance I have been in love with classical ever since.
Every time I hear this beautiful fascinating music it reminds me of when my beautiful wife and I and our 3 children lived and worked in Saudi Arabia. The Arabs admired my wife and named her "Scheherazade."
do you still admire arabs, their histories and tails?Do you live in Mars? don't you know what are they capable to do? romantic, yeah very romantic, but the reality?!!
אילנה היערי People are basically good everywhere in the World that you go. The problem is the greed and corruption of tyrants who seize power and use "religion" and influence to cause trouble.
Sophia ela Don't judge the israelis entire culture by one comment. And אילנה היערי don't judge all of the arabs by one thing. I agree with Jim Jackson, there is good everywhere. And, you ruined what he had to say with your comment. He was saying how much he loves the music and why, and you insult an entire group of people. Nice was to go about things.
אילנה היערי please sir don't say "arabs" but muslims and do not forget that arabs and jews are cousins so they share the same mentality if u know what i mean
It feeds my soul. I want to paint to it--Have been hearing parts of it in my mind for several days and bringing back memories of the Olympic skaters moving to this music.
YEARS ago, I saw a restored copy of silent era Sinbad the sailor movie. They added this music. I can still feel the roll of the sea when I hear this music. It transports you.
This was very nice, I could hear Sheherazades voice near the end as she closed each evening, and the King grumbling for her to continue. 2 thumbs up for Maestro Arnold and The Moscow Symphony.
I was drawn here after watching The man with one red shoe starring Tom Hanks, I wanted to hear the unbutchered version of this piece and all I can say is ....... Beautiful :)
The St Louis Symphony will be performing this in their 2013 season, and I'm quite excited. Since I moved to STL area I got to see the Firebird and Pictures at an Exhibition last season and now this, I'm hitting all my dream concerts in short order.
I watched Leverage tonight and heard beautiful piece of music its just so beautiful written by Russian composer Rimsky Korsakov. Thank you for posting.
Hearing this...I can just imagine myself in a great palace, in the darkest hours of the night....watching starlight illuminate the golden sands of the desert.....listening to Scheherazade tell her stories to save her life....
i used to have a child's cassette tape that had the story on it, and i just adore this piece and the story. pity its so quiet though. i would love to be able to blast this out of my laptop while i study. still, i adore it and it sounds great.
@knapplindsey I heard it on Leverage as well but i remembered it back from when i used to play violin... thanks to this show i found my favorite classical piece again.
I consider myself a huge fan of all music, and all though this genre isn't my "specialty" this is one of the best classical tunes I have ever heard. The story of the kalender prince is by far my favorite.
@lauraap81 I will definitely check it out... my marching band show back in 1979 included arrangements of scheherazade and farandole and I came to YT to see what they were like in their original form. Sadly there is no video of our shows back then, I have to remember that we didn't have cameras in our phones back then! I played trombone as well at Greenwood HS in Indiana - now my son plays trumpet there. good luck with your show!
A masterpiece. I can picture the beautiful Scheher. before me as she pops grapes into my mouth. R. Korsakov's exotic music is like Calgon bubble bath--it 'takes me away' to far off places, makes me forget my troubles--that's a good thing. I love Schera. , but folks there are also other worthy RK works waiting to be played--Overture on Russian Themes, Sadko--a musical poem, his various opera suites, Russian Easter Overture--check them out and CALL your local sym. and ask that they be played!
The first place I recall hearing this was from The Smurfs. Everytime I still hear it I think of Gargamel!

Korsakov... The Great Nationalist composer... His music will live on for centuries to come.

La prima volta che l'ascoltai ero bambino e fu un'esperienza indimenticabile.
Wow! Just beautiful. Takes my breath away every time. And I love rock from Alisa to the British tradition, but this: there are no words!
There were lots of great composers, but this SCHEHERAZADE, is my favorite piece of music.

Oh Glory makes me have that inspiration in other humans, despite the evil in the world. Oh Glory! This music is food for the Spirit!
It feeds my soul. I want to paint to it--Have been hearing parts of it in my mind for several days and bringing back memories of the Olympic skaters moving to this music.
I love this. It nearly brings me to tears listening to it.

I played this for my freshman year marching band show! So beautiful!
YEARS ago, I saw a restored copy of silent era Sinbad the sailor movie.
They added this music. I can still feel the roll of the sea when I hear this music.
It transports you.
I loved hearing this piece throughout the recent Sochi Winter Olympics, at the Opening Ceremony and in some of the figure skating routines.
This was very nice, I could hear Sheherazades voice near the end as she closed each evening, and the King grumbling for her to continue. 2 thumbs up for Maestro Arnold and The Moscow Symphony.
I'd forgotten how much I love this.
I have listened the piece full, is so fantastic!, good job.
I was drawn here after watching The man with one red shoe starring Tom Hanks, I wanted to hear the unbutchered version of this piece and all I can say is ....... Beautiful :)
The most popular skating music for the Olympics EVAR. Last time I heard it three times in a row, and different every time - what a versatile piece!

These people who don't like this amazing piece have no souls!
The St Louis Symphony will be performing this in their 2013 season, and I'm quite excited. Since I moved to STL area I got to see the Firebird and Pictures at an Exhibition last season and now this, I'm hitting all my dream concerts in short order.

James Mason and Kirk Douglas. I now have several recordings of it.
I consider myself a huge fan of all music, and all though this genre isn't my "specialty" this is one of the best classical tunes I have ever heard. The story of the kalender prince is by far my favorite.
