I just got an Ashford Traveller…I’ll say she’s my first and only wheel. Can’t wait to get good enough to ply as thinly as you do. I’d like to know more about why/how you use each of the wheels. Thanks.
Glad I came to this video. I got a Echo that was suppose to be new. I dealt with a dishonest dealer and terrible customer service from the makers of this wheel.
I'm so sorry, Sharon. We thought the engineer was helpful or at least really tried to be but the customer service was very poor. I would never buy another.
Perhaps it's a blessing in disguise that your queen bee came to you? Imagine what would have happened if she had gone to a home without an engineer partner who could help you to fix her up! I'm sure you'll get many years of enjoyment from her now...! Thanks for sharing your spinning wheels with us. Take care!
Wow! I am pretty new at spinning. Over a year ago my husband so kindly made me a DODEC (plans found free on Google), because I wanted to see if I would like spinning before I invested in a new wheel. It spins, but there are not many videos on how to spindle spin, so I don't recommend it to a newbie. lol Then I bought a Electric Eel Wheel 5.1. I really like it for it's portability and it was very reasonable in price. After that I was on a trip in Wisconsin last fall and stopped by Susan's Fiber Shop to just see what she all had. Susan sat down with me for a couple of hours trying out different wheels in my budget range and I walked away with a Ashford Kiwi II and a Snyder Drop Spindle. I am very pleased with those purchases. I just need a Super Flyer for my Ashford. I found out I really enjoy taking fleece to fiber. I have all fiber prep tools now and would like to get a used Drum Carder. I am 66 and it is never to late to find something you enjoy and love doing, Whether I am using a drop spindle or spinning on a wheel, it is so relaxing.
I agree, Chris, that it's never too late. Hobbies, learning, and having fun keep you young anyway! I've seen DODECs online before, but not in person. You know I CAN spin on a spindle, but I got a wheel first, so I am not great on a spindle, because I put all my efforts into the wheel from the beginning. It's great that she spent time with you and gave you the chance to try a bunch of different equipment!
Thank you for this Chris, I’m 26 and I have come across the spinning community through weaving and I think I’m in love. Both this comment and this video is telling me it’s never to late to try something, who knows maybe I’ll love spinning as well. I bought my first handspun art yarn and I adore it, I can stare at it for ages and admire the squishy amazing ness of the colours and textures. I’m still a little overwhelmed by the choices of wheels though so I’ll have to do more research. I definitely need to save up
Thanks for the tour of your wheels. You are so lucky to have a hubby that can assist you in your creative endeavors like that. It's so nice to see different wheels out there and how they perform. I spin on spindles only at the present time. My hubby is very sick and his needs come first. If I could start over I would be spinning at a younger age and would've been able to have spinning wheels as well. You know, the woulda, shoulda, coulda type deal. That's where I'm at. I love being able to create my own yarn. It's so rewarding. I do what I can and I'm happy with that. Thank you 😊
So many wheels! I have two. The first is a home made second hand wheel (how I learned) which is now purely decorative. The second is an Ashford Kiwi 2. I use it constantly. I have the regular and lace weight flyer for it.
Hi Trish well I thought of four names; Bobby, Eileen, Cricket and Connie. Your Bobbin leaned or wobbled; so that's why I picked Bobby or Eileen. It used to make a chirping, creaky noise; so that's why I picked Cricket. And the lady kind of conned you when she sold you this spinning wheel; so that's why I picked Connie. Or pick something nice because it's not your wheels fault that she had all these problems. I hope this helps or makes you smile. Thanks for always making me smile when I watched all of your videos.
Lucky for you with an engineer husband. My wife has five spinning wheels also with similar stories. The only one we have bought that didn't need technical attention was the new Kromski Polonaise. Great vid thank you. Be careful of those spindles, you might go to sleep always dreaming of spinning wheels.
I might be on my way to spinning wheel potato chip syndrome. I've wanted to try spinning for quite a while, but was put off by the price of new wheels. I recently decided to give an EEW 6.0 a try. It just recently arrived. I haven't had a chance to try it out yet. Well, before it arrived I spotted an Ashford Traditional wheel in one of the online marketplaces with a combination of price and condition that I couldn't resist. It should be here later this week. I tend to suffer from potato chip syndrome with most things I get into. I have five dogs, a half dozen or so vintage sewing machines, a couple of looms, and the list goes on.
I just watched this and enjoyed it very much. If you have not named your Spinolution yet it made me think of Sally from Nightmare Before Christmas. A little worn and put together but still lovely.
I have 5 wheels as well. A tiny charka, a great wheel, a Kromski Polonaise and a CPW. I use all but the charka as it is for cotton and spins sewing thread small and I don't really need that small a thread. I am currently using my Kromski and my CPW for flax. Grow my own flax and am processing it myself. I just need the garden frogs to finish the flax for spinning.
I had the same experience with Spinolution custom service, I bought 3 wheels new, each had issues and some flaws. I called and was told that was within the parameters of quality control. Missing bolts, bent flyer shafts on two, big splinters hanging off the wood, runs in the finish. It was a terrible experience. At the high price of them I expected a functional, well made and finished wheel. Thankfully, I got help from another seller that helped me fix them. I sold each within a year (I was honest about my issues) and will not support a company that doesn’t stand by their products. I bought a schacht matchless and a Hansen mini spinner, both companies have impeccable customer service. Had to send my matchless in, the paid for it and had it back to me in two weeks, no questions asked. It was new and under warranty.
I am! I never got too great with a drop spindle. I can spin a single, but it still doesn't feel easy. They are so portable, I kind of wish I had devoted more time to learning ;)
I wish I had watched your video before I purchased a Spinolution King Bee. What a disaster! I purchased the wheel and when it arrived, the accelerator wobbles and the drive bands won't stay on. It looks like it was damaged in shipping because it was packaged so poorly. Spinolution sent me instructions to try to adjust myself. I spent 30 minutes trying to fix it and gave up. You don't spend $1100+ on a new wheel and then have to fix it when it arrives. Spinolution paid to ship it back for repairs. In the meantime, I bought an Ashford Joy 2. Guess what, it worked right out of the package. I have a feeling that I will also be collecting spinning wheels. Any experience with a Lendrum?
My SO knows better than to ask how many wheels, looms, etc. are enough/too many...he has enough firearms of one sort or another to start his own army, plus all of the accoutrements for reloading, repairing, building, ad nausea! He also is a bow hunter (with all of the assorted goodies), a leather worker and a serious beader. I only have six wheels at the moment, 7 looms of various types (2 of which still need to be put together), and all of the other odds and ends of spinning and weaving equipment...but still have other items on my "to be acquired" list. Good thing we live in a large house with lots of outbuildings (don't get me started on the tack room or the tool shed). Having an engineering hubby, or in my case a gunsmith who can tear down, clean, and reassemble a WooLee Winder in the blink of an eye, is sooo handy! Totally worth the effort to keep them fed in my book!
So handy indeed, and I feel the same. John also reloads, hunts, etc., plus Harleys and tools. He always gets interested in the tools and doo dads and making them better. It's nice. It's good to have your own hobbies though. Otherwise you'd just have to stare at each other all the time. Who can do that?
I still can't sleep! I have two wheels, both from the seventies. One is a rickety old beast I learned to spin on, the other is an older Louet model. I really want a new(er) wheel with more options, but they're so expensive! Loving your little herd! Spinning wheels are herd animals, just like sheep ;)
Hi Trish! Loving your channel. I'm a brand new spinner and have been trying different wheels before I take the plunge. Because of my personal issues (why am I like this?) I'm hoping to buy one brand new wheel that can do everything. So my question to you is, how do you like your spinolution wheel now that you've had it a while? I'm seriously looking at the Monarch because of it's unique abilities and I like the one a woman has let barrow to try out. Have you had other issues with it? Do you feel like it's pretty versatile? Thanks so much for your time in answering this!
Hi, the grey with turquoise spots wool is gorgeous 😍 thank you for this video. I have two spinning weels and one is ordered it's a ˋMichi von Schwarzenstein ´ and it spinns as soft as butter if that make sence 🤣 takes two years to get one 🙄 one year left to wait. With love Katja
That yarn turned out really cool. I've been thinking of weaving with it. I had to look up that wheel. It is REALLY cool, and it does make sense that it spins soft as butter. I'm sorry you have to wait, but I think it will be worth it!
I have three with a fourth soon! My first wheel was also an Ashford Traveler (, Betsy)she also had the jumbo flyer ...sold her in order to get a Majacraft Aura (Isla Rose). My second is a Schacht Sidekick (Claire) . My third wheel is an Indian Head Salish bulky spinner, on a singer sewing treadle. My fourth on order, is a Hansen mini wheel. Really enjoyed seeing all your wheels! Like minds....
Hey there! Loved your tour! I’m so sorry you had such a terrible experience. I’m glad you found a way to turn it around! I’m going to look for a way to follow your example with a similar yarn experience. Btw, did you know that your rescued lady has a special compartment for her spindle pegs? It’s on the left side in the back. You can see it in some other RUclips videos and it’s also demoed by Crafty Housewife Yarns, who is also a Spinolution dealer/RUclipsr and very sweet lady. :) Best of luck to you and your spinning ladies!!
I did know, but they clink together slot in there, and I hate that noise after a bit so I just keep them out. Sometimes I think I have a touch of misophonia because I have a few noises that drive me nuts! It's very convenient.

Wow! Five wheels! I have one (quite satisfied - or am I? HMM) Anyway, thanks for sharing your experiences with them. If you haven't found a name for the Spinolution, I think Grace would be appropriate. By the grace of many people helping her to get running well and for all the grief you had to deal with along the way, I think that name fits.
your 5 wheels are amazing! You are blessed to have been able to get your spinolution wheel fixed like that. I recently purchased my 4th wheel, so now it's an official flock. Also no name for the new wheel yet. I don't know why, but sometimes it takes forever to name a wheel or pet (yes, I had a cat for 2 months before naming it). Almost forgot... I love the made e-spinner!
I'm attached to them all. I did buy one or two others along they way, but they went to live with friends because they didn't fit me, or the flock. Lucy was suggested, and I think that's going to be her name. I kept trying to think of volatile Queens from history, since she's a Queen Bee, but a wee bit sketchy!
Queenie. That is her name. She will always treat you well as you have cured her. My CPW treats me well because I rescued her from disuse and gave her something to do. I really think these wheels have a certain type of soul. They thrive when they are used and loved.
I think that's how they tell me their names, it's their soul coming through, but I have to know them for a while before I name them. She is being pretty polite now.
aaahhhh your wheels are so lovely!!! I only have my Ashford Kiwi 2 named Erin, but I love her to death. I'm super jealous though of your diy electric wheel. I may use that as a base to make my own ;) do thank your husband for me for such innovative craftsmanship!
I will do that. When he saw it out, he was immediately putting that bearing back on. When he originally built it, I moved the flyer from my Traveler back and forth, so it was even less expensive.
He ordered the full setup from the Woolery in Louisville. They have helped him there before, so he calls if he ever has an odd request. They're awesome and helpful!
the name that came to mind for the wheel is Trixie since it was a real trick to get her to work but it sounds like now it works fine but who knows what's down the road LOL
I have 5 wheels. Actually maybe a few more as I keep giving them to family members to use. I really want an Ashford Country Spinner 2. I have an antique wheel that came out west by wagon train.
Hi I just found your site. I loooooooove your wheels. I have 5 also. But a hint for you. A friend gave me a one way electric wheel. To make a long story short I put a twist in the band, making itvlook like a figure “8” . I spun in reverse. Went from a “S” to “Z” direction. Might see if you were someone sometime. See you
I would give that spinolution wheel a guy's name, because it reminds me of a bad date... How about Bentley, since it came to you all bent... Spelling is intentional, spinolution doesn't get a capital S from me after hearing what happened to you 😕 Now of course your collection will not be complete until you get a Saxony style wheel... I thought I would only spin on a Saxony for the rest of my life... Until my daughter, who was very devoted to her e-spinner, decided to try the 2nd hand Ashford traditional I brought home in February, and decided to buy a old Louet S10. She did not like the Louet and wanted to trade, so I told her I would give the Louet a try. It is slowly growing on me (maybe I should name her Ivy) and I might just keep it, it has the benefit of having large bobbins...
I want to learn to spin and weave...I already knit and crochet. I had a friend show me some basics in college...but it was such a busy time of life. Now that I'm retirement age, I'm wanting to get back to it...but not sure I'm smart enough for the spinning. I listen to you, and have zero understanding of the vocabulary.
Terms can be learned just like you learned all the terms for knitting and crochet. Stick around and watch the spinning Playlist. We'll have you making yarn in no time!
"do not learn to spin on an antique wheel" I'm fixing up my great-great-great-great-grandmother's (idk if that's the right amount of greats, it's my memere's great great grandmother) spinning wheel and idk how to spin... I'm just gonna keep going because I want to learn
Oh, no! Did I saw that word for word?? I shouldn't have really. If it was a working wheel before, then it's probably just fine to learn on. They don't really go bad. We don't think now that the wheel I taught myself on was ever even meant to spin on, but I didn't know that then. I'm sure you will do great!
I just bought a spinning wheel. Not sure brand but I need a book to figure out how to use it. Any info you could shed light on would be great. Need to attach pics.
Right now, Freya is my favorite, but it's mostly because she is just very versatile. I can relate to the space thing though. I don't have a studio or craftroom, so finding space for full size wheels gets more challenging as the herd grows.
Great video of your wheels ,I have an Ashford Traveller, single treadle, and I just purchased an old Mennonite made wheel that needs a few things to get it running.I would call your wheel sketchy or risky lol
I do! I was around someone the other day who said "I just don't see how anyone could need a third wheel." I thought, "Okay, I'm sure you're nice, but you are definitely not my people." 😂😂
I just got an Ashford Traveller…I’ll say she’s my first and only wheel. Can’t wait to get good enough to ply as thinly as you do.

Good point. If she had gone to someone else, I bet she'd have been returned, or they would have been really frustrated.

Oh, Dory. I'm sorry your hubby is unwell, and glad you have spinning for an outlet. We all need one, but especially when you're a caregiver. 💚
So many wheels! I have two. The first is a home made second hand wheel (how I learned) which is now purely decorative. The second is an Ashford Kiwi 2. I use it constantly. I have the regular and lace weight flyer for it.
Ashford makes some great wheels!
Her name was Lola! She was a show girl!….. these wheel are so cool!!
I love how you explained the electric wheel your husband rigged up.
Spinning wheels are like Lay's potato chips,
No one can have just one...😎
I don't know what my limit is, but so far I know it's not six.

This sounds absolutely normal to me
My matchless arrives today and I’m so excited for my first wheel! Would you recommend double drive or scotch drive for a complete beginner?
Well I think they're both great but I like that it's easier to make tiny tension adjustments with double drive for new spinners.
I think you should name your newest wheel Murphy. It sounds like Murphy's Law was happening when you got her. :)
I will do that. When he saw it out, he was immediately putting that bearing back on. When he originally built it, I moved the flyer from my Traveler back and forth, so it was even less expensive.
@@FiberLoveDiary I forgot to ask where did you get your Maiden set up? I'm trying to see if I can build my own or if I have to request it somewhere...
He ordered the full setup from the Woolery in Louisville. They have helped him there before, so he calls if he ever has an odd request. They're awesome and helpful!
@@FiberLoveDiary Good to know!
So much fun to pretend I was hangin out with you :) Can't wait for October
I don't think I can wait until October. Maybe this summer, we should have a spinning girls weekend here.
the name that came to mind for the wheel is Trixie since it was a real trick to get her to work but it sounds like now it works fine but who knows what's down the road LOL
Believe me, that's on my mind. What might go wrong next??
I’m think Gerdie for the Queen Bee wheel... As in Galloping Gerdie. Lol Love your videos, keep them coming please
Thank you so much! They're fun.
Do you have an idea what that piece of wood is for where the motor is attached to? I have that in my very old flax wheel and don’t know what it is……
Would you be able to send a photo to fiberlovediary@gmail.com? I'm not sure what you mean.
How about the name Miss Bumble for your Spinolution wheel?
Thank you for sharing your wheels!
I have 5 wheels. Actually maybe a few more as I keep giving them to family members to use. I really want an Ashford Country Spinner 2. I have an antique wheel that came out west by wagon train.
My first wheel..antique...lol It is now just a pretty in my home💙
I think it happens to a lot of people. At first we just don't know what to look for, as spinners. At least they are fun for decor!
See you
Thanks for the tip! I don't think I'll be building another one, and flipping the motor around works perfectly on the pivot.
Fiber Love Diary just a thought in case someone else wanted to try.
I think her name is Barbie as pink and sparkly yarns would compliment her light birch finish 💖
She does have a fair complexion!
Anx you get to blame her for having to spin pink 😉
Nice hubby, too!
I would give that spinolution wheel a guy's name, because it reminds me of a bad date... How about Bentley, since it came to you all bent... Spelling is intentional, spinolution doesn't get a capital S from me after hearing what happened to you 😕
Now of course your collection will not be complete until you get a Saxony style wheel...
I think Delilah would be a good name if you haven’t named her yet. Great honest video. Thank you for sharing.
I suggest Bloody Mary for your spinning wheel
I want to learn to spin and weave...I already knit and crochet. I had a friend show me some basics in college...but it was such a busy time of life. Now that I'm retirement age, I'm wanting to get back to it...but not sure I'm smart enough for the spinning. I listen to you, and have zero understanding of the vocabulary.
Terms can be learned just like you learned all the terms for knitting and crochet. Stick around and watch the spinning Playlist. We'll have you making yarn in no time!
I just ordered a bullfrog
I hope you love it
"do not learn to spin on an antique wheel" I'm fixing up my great-great-great-great-grandmother's (idk if that's the right amount of greats, it's my memere's great great grandmother) spinning wheel and idk how to spin...
@@FiberLoveDiary thanks!! I might've been paraphrasing a bit, but you did say they're really hard to learn on or something along those lines
Queen bee should be named Boudica for the ancient Celtic Queen
Do you still answer comments?
I try, but I'll tell you, it's getting more challenging 😂
I just bought a spinning wheel. Not sure brand but I need a book to figure out how to use it. Any info you could shed light on would be great. Need to attach pics.
If you haven’t named her yet, I’d suggest Calamity!
😂😂😂😂😂 I've been calling her Lucy, but I don't mind Calamity either.
Thank you for sharing your wheels. I have a name for the wheel Camille.
I only have three spinning wheel s and one electric wheel
I’m pretty interested in the Schacht matchless, but then my other two wheels are both Schachts. My problem is not having enough space.
Thanks! I love my Traveller so much. She was definitely sketchy, but now she's working like she should. The Mennonite wheel sounds interesting!
Forget to tell u I have 3 wheels! I tell my husband ! I do not have more then everyone else.
Do you sell yarn
Not right now! I am planning to open an old Etsy storefront to sell some handwoven towels, so yarn could be in the future someday.
You need to just be sure you hang around with people who say "Oh, only 5 wheels?" rather than people who say "Why do you have 5 wheels?"
I do! I was around someone the other day who said "I just don't see how anyone could need a third wheel." I thought, "Okay, I'm sure you're nice, but you are definitely not my people." 😂😂
@@FiberLoveDiary We just don't need that kind of negativity in our lives!
You miss a Louet
I've never tried a Louet. I would definitely say yes to the right Majacraft those or Lendrum.
Call her Lucy as she was loose n squeaky. Lol. But she is beautiful anyway
I think Lucy is the right name! They usually just come to me, but this feels right. Thanks!
Could I get your email address to send pics of my antique spinning wheel. I would love if you could answer some questions for me.
My email is neverendingknitnight@gmail.com. I will try, but I'm no expert!
My email is gallo.kelly@gmail.com if you'd like to exchange.
Good Lord- I had six sons… no girls, how many wheels does that mean I will have?
