It is damn near impossible to see video of Cold Blood performing at the peak of their powers. Or, really anything by them. This video is worth its weight in platinum. THANK YOU FOR THIS UPLOAD. I'm loving this.
Additionally, Skip's sung co-lead on Tower's "The Skunk, The Goose, and The Fly", "Sparkling in the Sand" (both on East Bay Grease), and had a solo on "Gone" (Bump City) which he wrote and dedicated to his wife that had passed away. Skip's the one who is hyping up the audience in this video, too.
Fun Fact: In 1972 Lydia sang with Tower Of Power, on the song "Dead". It appeared on the 2LP set, LIGHTS OUT SAN FRANCISCO. The song is here on you tube. ruclips.net/video/oLrAUrbOIsg/видео.html
Saw this lineup in Bushnell Park Hartford Ct. 1973 on a hot summer sunny day. It was a GREAT show from a GREAT band!!!!You got me hummin, I'm a good woman etc. what a show!!!!!!!
Wow, does this bring back memories! I saw Cold Blood twice in the early 70s, once in Newport Beach and another time in San Francisco. I was a fan of both Cold Blood and Tower of Power, which both got started in the Bay area in the late 60s and shared some of the same personnel early on. Cold Blood went into hibernation about the mid-70s when Lydia decided to raise a family, but was resurrected in the mid-90s, with Lydia back to lead the band with her inimitable style, reminiscent in some ways of Janis Joplin (who recommended her to Bill Graham to help her get started). Because of Lydia, Cold Blood has always been my favorite funk horn band, and I'm glad to see she's back in business, also playing on a great track on a new ToP "Funky Doctor" Strokeland Superband album with the song "Plug Into Me." Go check it out.
Man, I am so lucky to have seen this lineup in my hometown on a couple times they came thru Merced, and of course the one and only Winterland! What a band! What a time! And the BEST music EVER!
Michael Sasaki! Mr Funkson! Not too much said about the guitarist in a funk band like this, but the Man kept the groove goin right along with the balance of members layin it down! Nobody else had the same smooth as silk delivery at this this, and he snuck in some slide work only matched by Duane! Miss this groove live!!
If you ever get to hear the 2 and 3 albums, you will hear both guitarists shine on lead and for me, especially fine rhythm guitar so tight, the San Francisco sound.
WOW I had never heard Lydia hit notes like that! I've gotten to know her in the last decade. I heard one album and didn't even realize it was her voice at first, then I saw this and asked her about it. She was telling me that she and Grace Sick were next door to each other in the hospital when they both got nodes and had to have them operated on. She still sings her butt off, but I had no idea she ever had those whopper high notes. She is AMAZING. I "Still" wanna be her when I grow up!
Thanks for pointing that out, however are you sure that's not Frank Davis of whom Sandy Mckee replaced on drums? Sandy Mckee was the bomb funk drummer back then.
Ian Croft I opened for them in 72 and I remember they had a black drummer then. He had a beat up drum set with cracked cymbals and all. I zeroed in on that because I was the drummer for my band, The Gabe Christopher Band, we have stuff on RUclips
@@vernonsteinkamp1088 My goal as a young teenager in the early 70's was to play on stage at Winterland. By the time I was ready, Winterland was shut down. I loved the place and that just seemed so wrong. I hope you were able to appreciate being there at the time.
I saw her in 1975 Redwood City, CA. Awesome voice for a small woman , sang over the horns. And stone fox beautiful. Should have been as popular as Janis but the culture changed. I have all Cold Blood records, I think.
What an absolute treat and takes me back to my wasted youth. I'd almost forgotten what a little dynamo she was. I moved to San Diego in 1974 and the first concert I attended was Cold Blood at the Balboa Hotel ballroom. They set the place on fire !! I was actually introduced to their music by black guys in my US Army outfit and I reciprocated by introducing them to the Allman Brothers Band. Hope they're still listening...Jim Martin, Lexington, KY
I just got a flashback. I remember lighting up a joint, taking a hit, passing it to the person next to me and never seeing it again. Thanks for jarring my memory. I had totally forgotten about that.✌️😊

WOW, What a treat to see a film of Cold Blood playing at Winterland. Boy, was that a an incredible time and how lucky we were here in the Bay Area to have Winterland, The Fillmore East & West (sadly never made it to either one) and let's not forget The Day's on the Green!!! I was still in highschool when Winterland was the hot concert venue. I used to go every weekend to rock out with some of the greats, many were just starting out then. Again, thank you for sharing this wonderful treasure.
I was at this gig. Just graduated from high school. Lydia was on fire by the end of the show. This video doesn't have the entire set. Thank you for this. Rod Ellicott was the only other bass player that gave Rocco Prestia a run for his money. Lydia was the Funk singer of the day. No woman touched her range and feel. Noticeher sort of Joe Cocker hand movements. Great Great band.
2 different people. Same love of music. As far as who’s smoother, let’s settle this. 2 jars of honey. One named Lydia. One named Janis. Both sweet as can be. Tip each one upside down and the honey pours out the same.😊🍯
I never saw them live, but as an LA kid I bought their first album, admittedly cuz I saw Lydia on TV and dug her. This music is solid bay area Cali gold.
Saw her about this same time (1973) at an open air concert in Portland Oregon and I fell in love with her right then and there on that hot summer day. It was a triple header concert: Cold Blood, then Aerosmith, then BTO.
Bob Bailey Diverse concerts like the you attended in Portland were very common back then. Promoters mixed different styles of bands on the same stage and everybody showed up!
Man I've known Lydia and Raul for years but I have never gotten to see anything from the early days. I was SEVEN with they recorded this! LMAO. Standing on the stage with her, she still has that same soul. 50 years..and Lydia is still the same! Love that woman!

I saw the Thriller tour.
Got to talk to Michael the guitarist after their set.
We briefly discussed the acoustics of the auditorium.
I just love these black and white Winterland shows.
Saw Cold Blood many times! We thought it was as if Janis joined Tower of Power. LOVED this band!
Better & cuter too! Higher range, ect..But yes, got that bluesyness!
Skip Mesquite, who's in this video, was a member of Tower prior to Cold Blood. Tower's trumpet player Mic Gillette was a member as well at one point.
