would it be possible for the fins and fish tail to stay inside the cake without the layer of fondant around the body? Basically making a fondant sculpture piece and skewer it into a cake frosted with buttercream only. would the weight of the fondant on a thin skewer weigh it down and eventually pull at the cake making it fall?

Everytime I use buttercream to cover my fondant cakes when I bring the cakes to room temperature (before serving) the fondant begins warping and looses its “sharp edges”. Any suggestions? How soon before serving do you take your cakes out
