100 video on u tube. You are the only one explain properly. Thank you very much. The shopping list at the beginning is helpful. Why the clay is reddish?
Hi Edgardo - You only really need to use distilled water if your water happens to be softened. The additional salts will change how the sig settles. But if your water isn't softened, it should be fine :)
Thank you for the great and accurate recipe. I was just wondering whether it is a problem if the settling period is longer than 72 hours (by a day or two)?
You should be okay, Anna, but it may settle out a little more (meaning you may get a bit less sig in the end). It certainly wouldn't hurt to give it a try and see what happens, though! If you do, let us know how things turn out!
Anna Huppert Kedves Anna! Érdeklődnék, hogy neked milyen agyagból sikerült terra sigillatat készíteni? Itthon nem kapható a videoban használt C-Red, én most kishajmási anyaggal próbálkozom, kiváncsi vagyok sikerül-e? Többektől azt hallottam, hogy az itthoni agyagok nem igazán alkalmasak, ezért érdekelne, hogy neked hogyan sikerült? Köszönöm! Zita
@@zitahrabak5320 Anna Huppert Dear Anna! I would like to know what kind of clay you managed to make terra sigillat? The C-Red used in the video is not available at home, I am trying small material now, I wonder if I will succeed? I’ve heard from others that home clays aren’t really suitable, so you’d be interested in how you did it? Thanks! Zita
Hungary has a great tradition of terra sigillata surfaced Traditional Pottery so there must be some available, unless it was all used up. Moravian and some of the Black Sigilatta pots are examples, perhaps talk to a potter who makes traditional surfaces for advice, I wonder if it is more about the fineness of the particles and maybe the microscopic plates or the particles being thin enough in proportion to their thickness to be ready to lay flat? I don't know this with any certainty but play around with local wild clays or save time by asking old timer potters. I Love your Black ware and Groundbreaking glazes from the Scholarly potters of the Hutterian Broderhof way back in the 15th century. Wow!
Many thanks for this video. I am using your process to decorate Ancient Greek replicas. I have used an intense red natural clay from a beautiful beach full of it. Different clays vitrify at different temperatures, but I would like to ask if your formula has consistently vitrified and at which temperatures. All the best.
What an exciting project! I have fired this recipe using the Carbondale Red clay to both cone 04 and 02 with good results. Depending on the composition of the clay you’re using, your results will vary - I’d just suggest doing some tests to see if you get the results you’re hoping for.
I have just made a batch of your terra sig & didn't use distilled water. Why do you use distilled water? I have applied it to an earthenware pot & it doesn't appear to be shinny? It did shine up a section with a piece of plastic bags a test. I wanted to apply it to some very fine porcelain sculptures & was also wondering what temp it works best?
It depends a bit on what kind of clay you used - if the clay can be fired hotter, so can your sig! If you're not exactly sure, test firing is the best route. If you have access to a smaller test kiln, you could try firing it to different temperatures and see how it works. What you want to see is water beading up on the surface after firing rather than soaking into the clay... Let me know if you have more questions!
It’s no problem to boil in your kitchen - as it’s only clay, there really aren’t really many fumes generated. If you’re adding colorants to your sig, that may change things a bit, but I’d still expect it to be fine :)
Sorry for the slow reply! Did you use red art? For some reason with red art the same thing has happened to me lately as well. I've switched to using C Red (carbondale red) and that works great. You can get C Red from a number of US clay suppliers - let me know if you have trouble finding it!

Thank you for video, but where can i buy Red clay powder?

Hi, great video, you helped me alot, but i have a question... Can I use the pot for cooking later?
Hi Gisselle - This is just clay, so you can absolutely use the pot again after a good washing :)

Hi, Did you solve your issue? I am wondering if I need to use distilled water also.
I love your video. thank you so much.I did White one . but I don't know how many degrees should be for the best result (electric kiln)

Kip O'Krongly thank you so much. for your explanatory information.
Is it safe to simmer in your kitchen? Is there any risk of toxic fumes?

@@kipokrongly Hi Kip, thank you for your prompt reply! Great video. I'm going to give it a try.
I have struggled with this recipe. After simmering for over three hours, the specific gravity of the mixture didn't change. Any suggestions?
