  • If you have ever wanted a Jeep with 4-wheel steer, portal axles, an air cooled opposed engine, lots of cargo space, and no suspension then the M274 Mechanical Mule is for you! Meet Bud and his pair of Mechanical Mules that he brings to the Toledo Jeep Fest. The Mule may be one of the strangest Jeeps ever made but it works well as a purpose built off road machine and we are so glad that Bud was available to tell us all about it!

    We’ve had ours since 84 with many engine rebuilds but wow what a work horse it’s been! I rarely here this but one of its cool provisions is that the machine is designed to lay on its side to perform several maintenance tasks without having to drain any fluids.

    That last party trick where you pull the steering wheel out and can drive it walking is just the coolest design. It’s like a really early motorized pallet jack so you can load it full of stuff and not have to sacrifice cargo room with the seat.

    I enlisted in the Marines in 1966!! My MOS/military occupational specialty/0351 aka an Antitank Assault Man!! One of the weapons that I was trained for was 106mm recoil-less rifle!! It was mounted on a mule and there was a 50cal mounted on the 106!! That mule sure had no problem moving that 106mm around!! That was my introduction to military mule!! I sure would love to have one today so I could drive it around on my 17 acres!! On a final note, I never got to fire that 106mm in Vietnam nor drive the mule!! The VC had no tanks!! Bummer!! 0:28

      Hi Lazer3321, Chris Collard here. Thank you for sharing details on the Mule, 106mm, and 50cal. And more than that, thank you for your service. Most of us were just runny-nosed kids at the time, but I know `66 was a rough time to be a Marine. My dad is a Marine, and his enlistment and reserves ended in `64. Semper Fi

    In the 80's I had 6 M274s that I rented to the Movie Studios DBA Movie Mules. Teamsters (399) would race them at Lunch and break them causing me to sell them off..

    A lot of things were 'Jeeps'.
    The term dates at least as far back as WW1 and was applied to new 'gadgets', prototype vehicles, even new recruits.
    George S. Patton referred to the Dodge WC and variants as 'Jeeps' while calling the 'Truck, 1/4 Ton, 4X4. G503' 'Peeps'.

    A users training manual would be interesting. Turn the steering wheel over, walk behind mule. To me it seems this would more likely be designed to go up a short steep bank. Were there originally long lost, not used around airstrips, maybe not even issued, tire chains?

      They get there origins from ww2 Burma roads as a jungle burden carrier about the only time I flip my steering wheel is when I have loaded heavy with camp gear and can't see to back it up on trailer or if I'm hauling a crap ton of dirt it keeps the seat clean by not having one on it and just walking. They can haul 4 stretchers if steering wheel is down and seat off

    It's a really interesting vehicle, it would be useful on the alpine mule tracks in the mountains of northern Italy where I live. it is very expensive to buy one?

    • @Gone_Gpn
      @Gone_Gpn  10 месяцев назад +1

      We think they are dang cool as well, but as you say difficult (and expensive) to find one. Thanks for the input.
