  • In this video, we introduce the practice of symbiotic farming, a method that closely aligns with natural farming principles. Filmed in mid-May 2024, the video covers various aspects of this sustainable agricultural practice.
Symbiotic farming emphasizes no-till, no fertilizers, and no pesticides, similar to natural farming. The key difference lies in the dense planting of a variety of plants, promoting biodiversity by coexisting with insects, birds, and other creatures.
My farm has been practicing natural farming, and I will show how it shares commonalities with symbiotic farming. We grow multiple vegetables in the same place, such as gourds with winged beans, and other combinations like burdock-like vegetables and wild yams.
We also demonstrate how young Malabar spinach and small mustard greens can thrive together. The taro in our field grew from an unharvested tuber, showcasing nature's resilience. Carrot flowers bloom profusely, making seed collection easy and aiding in the practice of sowing more seeds.
Symbiotic farming includes planting small shrubs or fruits in the center of ridges, a method gradually adopted in my farm. For example, ginger is grown in the center to facilitate the growth of other vegetables, aligning with symbiotic principles.
While sowing cucumber seeds, we observe various stages of growth and challenges, such as poor germination conditions. This is common, but through persistent efforts, we recover and prepare areas for better growth by cutting roots of weeds, securing soil, and leveling it for sowing more seeds.
The video captures encounters with wildlife, like a mongoose and the Great Mormon butterfly, emphasizing the importance of coexisting with nature in symbiotic farming. Flowers like the shell ginger are planted to complement the vegetable garden.
Harvesting is done sustainably, taking only what is needed. Malabar spinach and local mustard greens are harvested, with attention to thinning for better growth. We also harvest winged beans and cherry tomatoes, which grow almost naturally with minimal support.
The cultivation methods shown in this video are just the beginning. Years of practicing natural farming have naturally led to these methods. The goal is to achieve SDG farming, that is, sustainable farming, but there is still much to learn. Continued research and support through channel subscriptions are essential.
Thank you for watching and supporting sustainable agriculture.
