Thank you for a great video that quickly helped me understand PFDs. Your demonstrations and dialog are clear and informative :)

The inflatable pouch that you are calling a type III is considered a type V by the USCG and must be worn

The same tube you can manually blow into has a little pin you can depress and that allows out the air/CO2.

    Great video!
As for me, I'd much rather stick with traditional pfd's for open water paddling. Unless I'm with a group of VERY trustworthy friends. Friends I trust with my life. After all, that's really what this is about, a life saving device.

none of these... the best one is the new German one "Restube".. ..how can you get a lifejacket on if your being pummelled under water in the washing machine... or if you're injured....also this pulls you up waist first, not head first... tube is the best - and they are half the size and weight of those

      Christina
      LOL!!!!
Get real! Restube is NOT going to be of ANY use if you're unconscious. LOL!

At first glance, the Restube is interesting- small, worn around the waist, an inflatable bag. It is similar to a pillow of air or a beach ball.
      Restube IS NOT for emergencies!
      • Restubes are NOT U.S. Coast Guard approved. Repeat, NOT APPROVED!
      • Restubes require a conscious, able-bodied person to activate and use.
      • Restubes are grasped and held NOT worn.
      • Restubes will NOT activate or help an unconscious or injured person.
      • Restubes will NOT turn an unconscious person face-up.
      • Restubes require the person be conscious and physically able to hold onto the tube and keep his/her head above water until help arrives.
      • Being similar to a pillow of air or a beach ball, there are no handholds. It is problematic to hold onto such an item waiting for rescue.
      • Buoyancy is only about 16 pounds. If there is any wind, wave or chop- holding your head and airway above the water surface will become more difficult as your hands, arms and body tire from exertion and exposure to cold water.
Restubes are very likely to create a false sense of security and over confidence.
If the time comes when you have a bad day on the water you will want and need a U.S. Coast Guard approved PFD (Personal Flotation Device) (or a PFD approved by your region’s equivalent water authority).
Do your research before you purchase a Restube as a life saving emergency device.
