Hi, thank you for making this video, do I need to get the teacher writting structure and style videos to teach the theme-base writing? I will have my 1st grader and 3rd grader doing the theme base. But my 3rd grade has not had any structure in writting.😬
I'm currently trying to decide between this course or the Bible Heroes course for my upcoming third grader. This will be our first time using an IEW course. Do you have any advice on determining if our child is ready for this course or not?
If your child does not have formal writing experience or has limited writing experience, the theme-based programs are my go-to recommendation because you can easily speed them up or slow them down. You can partner with your child to share the pen if they are feeling overwhelmed with mechanics. I have suggestions based on grade/age over here: www.homespunchildhood.com/blog/iew-a-guide
Thanks for the video! I didn't see anything that specified expository writing -- would you say this incorporates or focuses on that type of writing somehow? I really like how this is laid out and I think I will be using it for my 4th grader but wanted to align with what they taught her at her private school.
There are many of informational pieces in this program. Expository writing is informational writing - writing meant to explain/expose - so looking Fun & Fascinating's Table of Contents, the following units would count: Key Word Outlines/Oral Reports, Summarizing References, and Multiple Source Research. If she already has a lot of experience with explicit writing instruction, you could also look at Structure and Style for Students.
It's geared towards 3-5th graders and is age appropriate content wise. Writing wise, following their pacing for a new 3rd grader writer might be tough. You can slow the units down and support your writer as needed. I am about to launch a writing guide that walks through how to support writers.
I've been searching for a review for this and couldn't find one! Thank you for sharing this.

Thanks. What are the grades of your kids? What complete curriculum did you choose this year?
Hey - We are doing IEW structure & Style for my 3rd grader and IEW People and Places with my 1st grader.

I will be using this in the 2024-2025 school year. This year i am using Bible Heroes and we are loving it.
Do you think this program is more advanced for the suggested grade levels?
