Getting tired of random indie game #500 that has PlayStation 1 graphics, and no option for texture filtering. The fad wore out its welcome, and now only gets sales from a small base of fans. Just like rogue likes. Which BTW COULD appeal to a larger audience simply by allowing texture filtering, but devs invested in perpetuating this dying fad always choose the fad over appealing to a wider audience. Plus texture filtering modes like lanczos are a thing, that exist. I have a few games from the list already, but valkie seems the most appealing new one. I always get a kick out of the horrible graphics game trope using unreal engine or unity, which makes the game completely unplayable on low end hardware, and these games are one of the biggest reasons why I'm done buying them, but ultimately it's the lack of choice. Not having the option to choose settings, which hurts nobody to include, but loses my sale for not including. Maybe some day devs will realize PC gamers like having options, because PC isn't a console.
Any chance you could get us some news? (not here and now, just an announcement from your project as a whole) There's been radio silence for so long I thought it had been abandoned, even though Id still be very excited to buy it once it comes out.
The only game I can think of that is criminally missing from this list is Cavern of Dreams, a wonderful blend of what feels like Banjo-Kazooie and Earthbound. I have no idea how you can make a game weave through joy and comfort to legitimate fear and unease so flawlessly My only other recommendation is The Spirit and the Mouse, which has modern graphics but has old Collectathon vibes going on
Cavern of Dreams is GOD TIER. The vibe reminds me of like, Animal Forest/Crossing on the 64/Gamecube somehow, and the movement in it is just... mmmmWAH, chef kiss. Seriously great atmosphere, too
There's also XF Extreme Formula by the same developer as Spark the Electric Jester. It's another in development antigrav racer akin to F Zero but the boost is tied to the engine's oxygen intake instead of the energy/health of the ship.
Corn Kidz 64 was honestly a fantastic delight for me. It was one a those games that felt like... it was made in the 90's, based on some Canadian French cartoon that aired back in the day. The art direction and the character interactions feel so well defined, especially with Seve and Alexis, to the point they feel like characters you definitely remember from somewhere. Pair that with the kinda humor in the game, the brain-massaging (and royalty free) music, the incredibly in-depth moveset and mechanics, and the kind of challenges and minigames you have to try out, and you get something that literally feels like it released 25 years ago, with its relatively short amount of unique levels as the only noticeable sign of a more modern design, and even then. Ex Zodiac... I should play that one again with an actual controller. Oh, but Super Kiwi 64, I've been saving that one for when I actually have time to bite into it, after all my college work for the time at least. It feels right up my alley, cute style and big levels with stuff to collect after some platforming trickery, what's not to love? Same thing with Pseudoregalia, actually... that one gets the added bonus of being a Metroidvania as well! Kinda surprised you didn't mention Cavern of Dreams, another ultimate favorite of mine. Ditching combat and health systems for a platforming-puzzle approach, the game feels like an absolute dream, both figuratively and literally. From mysterious areas to comfy and cozy, sun-basked landscapes, sights of wonder, and the occasional (and later on, plunging) dips into the more nightmarish material. The dragon you play as, Flynn, starts with an already surprisingly in-depth moveset as he stumbles into the titular cavern to rescue all of his siblings, still within their eggs, with even more moves to unlock as you progress, as well as items you can use in the area to change how Flynn moves around, or that you can use to interact with the environment in multiple ways. There are even times where the worlds you visit ooze into each other in a way that reminds me of Banjo Tooie but without the cumbersomeness. Alongside some really cute, cool and almost mystical character interactions and even a bit of background lore, a pretty sweet 100% completion reward, and even a few secrets that the game doesn't even acknowledge but are still there for you to find should you be savvy enough to get to them, this is definitely one of my favorites.
Missed out on Atlyss btw. $10 steam game that's a meshing of Phantasy Star Online and Ocarina of Time. But with chubby furry short stacks and giant dragon/goat milf.
It feels like ages since I found a new channel making videos in this format: with the scripting, the mascot, the wordplay, the calm talking, nothing overbearing in presentation, just a decent video
i was once working on something within this genre/aesthetic, but due to creative differences with the person i was working with we kinda ended up pausing the project, and by the time we were ready to pick up on it again my hard drive crashed i'd still love to revisit this idea some day
wow Mischief Makers. What a blast from the past. I now remember trying for months to rent that game from blockbuster but it was always fully rented out. Until one day it wasn't, so I took it home, popped it in and hated every second of it lmao

A "send-up" is a parody, usually a light mockery. I think the word you're looking for is "tribute" or "clone." Thanks for the recs! Pseudoregalia was great.
So while Corn Kids 64 and Psuedoregalia are top tier, you guys missed probably the best Banjo Kazooie-Like ever! Cavern of Dreams had me obsessed for MONTHS after playing it. What a special game for such a cheap price!
Putting Double Shake on the thumbnail was mean, I thought I'd missed the release. I've been waiting for that one to be more than a demo for a few years.
Just want to chime in that while Corn Kidz 64 looks great, sounds great, and feels great, I thought the gameplay was pretty bad. There are very few checkpoints but lots of troublesome areas where missing a jump makes you fall all the way down to the start of a gauntlet. On its own that would be manageable, but this is the kind of game where you can't trust your character to land where you think they will land, so it all winds up feeling bad. :/ Cavern of Dreams is my recommendation! That game had much of what I love about N64 games and I had a great time playing it!
Hey, you said N64? I'm in! N64 never gets old for me! It's my preferred console these days. Although, I love PS1,PS2,PS3 and genesis, NES, and SNES. All my favorite consoles. Gameboy and gameboy color fit in there too. But N64? My absolute favorite.
Kero Quest 64 is a good one. It's not out yet but it has a demo. In terms of gameplay it's almost entirely Mario, but in terms of aesthetic I would place it as something on the Dreamcast
There's a new one called Atlyss that's in Early Access which I recommend looking into. It has the visuals of the old N64/PS1 days and it's a ORPG/MMO like PS02. It's suggestive, but not explicit (much like Pseudoregalia).
So many of these games besides Corn Kidz 64, Super Kiwi 64, Macbat 64, Toree 3D/2/Panic Pack, Lunistice and Ion Fury (just to add more to the list and maybe help jump-start a sequel to this video for you) having a PC release and no console releases like the Switch :P those ports better be come soon to help maximize these devs' profits
On Steam Azure Striker Gunvolt - Mega Man Battlestar Asteroids - Asteroids Cassette Beasts - Pokemon Freedom Planet - Genesis Sonic Spark the Jester - more sonic Yars Rising - Super Metroid
If there's one other game in this vein that I'd suggest, it's _Real Web Legends: Carter's Quest._ It's going for a similar Zelda aesthetic as Valkie 64, but the combat and presentation is closer to an early Devil May Cry.
Wow great list. There was somebody that was claiming to make a Megaman Legends inspired game. With a pink or purple robot girl with blue-ish green hair. Sadly it's been years and I don't remember the name of the project/game. I'll drop a reply and separate comment if I remember it.
Toree 3D and Toree 2 are great Kirby inspired games. By that I mean it's easy to pick up but has you fighting an Eldritch God at the end because...? Fun? And I believe they're still just 99¢
Of all these games, corn kids and super kiwi actually look decent - the former captures the feeling of American programmers completely unfamiliar with this SGI workstation CPU and fighting with a texture cache smaller than the NES' video memory to make the best game they could make despite being housed on cartridges more expensive than the console itself, while Super Kiwi looks like the typical cashgrab game that only sold to clueless grand/parents buying gifts for their grand/children. The other games on the other hand are very obviously modern games with intentionally bad graphics that somehow have higher system requirements than Crysis, that Jet Force Gemini game in particular hit me like a shovel. The racing game looks "western racing game" fast that doesn't really convey speed as impressively as F Zero GX and we have yet another boomer shooter, cue that scene from Toy Story 2 with the shelf full of Buzz Lightyears.
One really cool aspect about the Switch port of Corn Kidz 64 is it actually has the option to play with the Switch’s N64 NSO controller. Makes it feel even more authentic, like I’m playing a game I rented for a weekend back in 1999.
Hey guys got a question here: What's the name of the track that's playing in the first part of the video where the first two games are introduced? Been looking for it for a while but just can't find it. Thanks and keep up the great work 👍
1:03 oh jeez, we infected you with the word 'pop'? I'm sorry about that. 1:41 what crunched aspect ratio? wait did you crop it for the video? is that why there's no HUD? 5:30 i'm bad at it too. I swear there's something wrong with the controls.. it's hard to say but something feels weird no matter what I do with the joystick axes.. at least some of the time it feels backwards. real neat game, but something just.. feels off.. it's probably just me being rusty though. 9:56 Nintendo can't sue you for making the game they refuse to make! well with lawyers anything is possible. 11:45 FINALLY. i've been asking for someone to make this kinda game forever. It took me a while to realize you weren't talking about new games that could run on the N64 with a flashcart, but just games inspired by N64 classics. Too bad. The former would've been a far more interesting list.

I usually try to watch videos like this while I'm doing something else, so I probably missed that. Regardless, I think a video about new games on the n64 could be more interesting anyway.
very niche viewership! our Sega stuff doesn't tend to land with people as much (sad) so add on the uh add-ons to that and it'd probably struggle even more

Where’s psuedoregalia?
???
why have you never made a sega cd/mega cd game list of some sort? whether it be a top ## list or a hidden gems r something of that sort?
very niche viewership! our Sega stuff doesn't tend to land with people as much (sad) so add on the uh add-ons to that and it'd probably struggle even more
OMG HE DID IT. Sorry for yelling 😁
Why would you need to put pants on Sybil? She's an animal. Animals don't wear pants.
Where's Cavern of Dreams?
didn't wanna make a list of just 3D platformers, could be a potential part 2!
