Stray Kids have a habit of playing with words in their music. Almost everything has a double meaning in the songs. Here, trash is a bit of a kickback to their haters who throw "garbage" at them. That they know what they are doing and will continue to do so no matter what people around them say. Some Korean words do not translate well into English and their meanings gets lost.
It was real fire and real fireworks. So… there are a few things to help with context in this song (there is a 45 minute breakdown by a couple - Andy and Jas that helped me a lot). They play around with their Korean words a lot. And this song plays around with ‘teuk’ which is a slightly derogatory word for unique/odd that they are constantly called, ‘byeul’ which is star and when you put teuk-byeul together it means special - and Seoul is called the teukbyeul city. The word you picked out is kinda equivalent to flashy, but it’s more like a sound effect for something sparkling. Rather than being cocky completely, they are introducing themselves as being teuk or odd but embracing that and saying that being odd makes them special. Now… the music video is pretty complex as far as meaning within their lore, and I haven’t completely dissected the meanings, but there are two major references to movies, doctor strange and a Korean film from 2006 called the host, where a monster from toxic waste dumping is being fought. My theory is that the monster is created by all the trash talking and garbage thrown their way, and it’s something they fight against to be that star. There are a lot of moments where they have shots of luxurious cars, but they aren’t in them, and that luxury is out of reach, and at times the song is aspiring for further success and telling us that instead of chasing what is shiny, to be the one shining. Just a few of my thoughts without getting into skz lore.
@@TripTipsPodcast byeul is one of the first words I learned in Korean, which I only started learning recently, so I thought it was fun that 5-star had so many star references (keep an eye out for star references when you listen to more of the album)
Stray Kids are masters of wordplay. There are oftentimes double or triple entendre in any Stray Kids track. It's amazing! As a casual KPop Kdrama enthusiast I've picked up on a few words and phrases, but there are idioms and slang that have no direct English/Western translation so captions aren't always spot on so I rely on other reactors who do know the language and culture to break it down for me. (Andy and Jas, Handsome Sausages, and PD at Form of Therapy are my go-tos.) TEUK is the Korean character = Special (skill/ability). Stray Kids use it to mean not just "special," but S-Class or top tier/the best/first class. Yes, the song, the entire album really, is a FLEX, but they are able to say, yeah, WE ARE BADASS, but it's just who we are, STRAY KIDS JUST BEING STRAY KIDS not paying attention to the obstacles in their way. Whatever gets tossed at them: trash, monster, fire, etc, they will just keep on, keeping on, doing it like Stray Kids does. It's fascinating! Thanks for the reaction! As with any Stray Kids track, it's well worth a deep dive. The entire song is a flex.
I really liked your reaction to the SKZ ! Each clip of the group always corresponds to the lyrics. - The clip shows the road along which the garbage truck with slag from the songs is the first to go, the S-class car wants to overtake it, the taxi is the last to go - songs of an average level and different genres. - The octopus is the ubiquitous press that tries to take a picture of the group at any given time.
Part of Stray Kids lore involves them jumping between parallel universes (mvs like side effects and circus for ex has two groups of them, as well as this eps) there's a guide out there on yt that explains it a lot more in detail and how it lays out over their MVs and stuff, it's a bit to explain lol but worth a watch to understand the backstory of their group lore. (Storyline lores is a big thing in kpop groups, like Enhyphen lore involves vampires, stuff like that. They each have their own universes, and sometimes they intersect if they're in the same company between groups) There's 3 more mvs for this album, in order is DLC, FnF, and Topline that just dropped a few days ago.
@anzamoni dw just last night in my head I was going thru Maxident MVs and I thought the hole time that I forgot one and I realized today that it was super board that is literally one of my fav song of the album🤣
U are definitely correct about picking up Korean words thru their music. I listen to bts music so often that alot of their lyrics r now engraved in my head. I can sing along now even tho it's not in English and thanks to translate I know what the words mean. Plus when they say rock, paper scissors in korean( pretty much the staple way the group makes decisions) and 1,2,3 in korean. I pick up how to count to 3 in korean very quickly.
