Set screws are very common pieces of hardware that are typically used to bind a part in place. They have standard machine threads on their outer diameter, and a variety of different tips that can be used for slightly different applications. They are typically made of steel or stainless steel, so there is risk of maring the mating part. This should be taken into consideration in the design, for instance, by adding a flat surface to the shaft it mates with. They are essentially screws, so it is a simple procedure to back the set screw out and remove the part it was holding in place. This makes set screws very versatile additions to a designers tool belt.
